Bulldogs soaked and stunned by Blue Ridge, 42-21

The Howe Area Chamber of Commerce hosted their sixth annual Downtown Howe-lloween Festival Saturday night even during the misting rain and chilly weather. The rain, however, did not dampen the spirits as the crowd was quite large with Trick ‘R Treaters filling the downtown area.

Vendors lined up the streets to sell merchandise and handout candy.

First United Methodist Church had several games for kids to play as well as Summit View Church.

The chamber sold sausage-on-a-stick and large turkey legs provided by Don’s Smokehouse.

Band finishes fourth in area

The Pride of Howe recently closed out “Bandtober” and the competitive marching season with successful region and area performances. The UIL Region 25 Marching Contest was held at Celina HS on October 12—the day classes resumed after the Howe ISD fall break.

“This year’s region contest brought unique challenges we’d never had before so we were very pleased with that performance,” said band director, Angie Liss. She further explained, “You get into a routine with rehearsals, ball games and contests but fall break threw everything a little off kilter. We knew we’d have to rehearse regardless of the school calendar and I’m so proud of the kids for coming in for the late morning rehearsals on their ‘break’ so we could still maintain the same number of rehearsal hours we would have had if we had been in class.”

The practice paid off and the band received first division ratings from all judges and qualified for the area contest. In speaking about the region contest, Liss also expressed her deep appreciation and respect for the rest of the band staff, Julie Cook, David Bilyeu and Brandon Manuel.

“My granddaughter was born the day before the region contest. I had to make a choice to be with my band or be with my family. I’m so thankful that Howe ISD administrators appreciate the priority of ‘family first’ and I’m

especially grateful for my fellow directors. I knew everything was in good hands and I was able to enjoy precious time with family.”

The area contest was held in Denton at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex on October 22nd and also brought its own set of challenges in the form of 30 mile per hour winds and wind gusts of even higher.

“In order to use our props in prelims we had to make some quick adjustments to our prop heights, shako straps and even zip tied our microphone stand to our stage to keep them from blowing away,” said Liss, “and even still we had sideways shakos and dads holding props being lifted off the ground! It was crazy!”

Sideways shakos and all, the prelims performance was enough to earn a spot under the lights in finals.

“There was an energy we all felt after the finals performance and I think we knew it was one of our best runs,” said Liss.

That performance proved to be a solid one in the eyes of the judges as well and the band finished 4th in area behind the much larger bands from Whitesboro, Commerce and Holliday.

Although the UIL Legislative Council recently approved a policy change that should take effect in August 2023 allowing bands the opportunity to ad-

vance to the state contest every year, under current UIL procedures 3A bands can only advance to the state level in odd numbered years. Had this been an advancement year, The Pride of Howe’s fourth place finish in an extremely competitive area would have qualified them for the state championships.

The band will now turn its attention to finishing out football season, allregion tryouts, Christmas concerts and

parades, winterguard, UIL solos and ensembles and UIL concert season.

Liss also that noted that work has already begun on next fall’s marching band show.

points and still captured the third seed in the playoffs, but now need to win at Lone Oak and have Bells take care of business against Leonard to cling a playoff berth as the fourth seed.

Shifty Tiger quarterback Brody Darland was able to rip through the defense for four touchdowns on the ground with 23 carries and 141 yards.

The Tigers’ game plan may have changed due to the pouring rain throughout the game as they did not attempt a pass. All 377 yards came on the ground. The Bulldogs had not allowed 300 yards rushing in a game during their first six contests in 2022, but have allowed 330, 418, and 377 in the last three-straight.

Howe could not overcome a lackluster first half performance on both sides of the ball as Blue Ridge raced out to a 36 -7 lead before the Dogs scored to cut the lead to 36-15 at intermission. Most of the yards allowed by Howe came in the first half as Howe Head Coach Lance Bryan and Defensive Coordinator Andrew Harvey made an adjustment at the half which severely hindered the Tigers in the second half.

However, the Howe offense committed costly turnovers which kept them from finishing scoring drives to get back in the game.

Howe’s offense racked up 306 yards, 206 of which were on the ground. Haley, with a sore shoulder, had noticeably little zip on his passes and played

Man that drove throughAngels of Care parking lot sentenced to 20 years for AggravatedAssault with a Deadly Weapon Darwood Kellett, 55, of Irving, Texas, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and 10 years in prison for Possession of Methamphetamine 1-4 grams. The defendant was found guilty following a four-day jury trial in the 59th District Court. The same jury that found the defendant guilty also determined his sentence following the punishment phase of the trial. Judge Larry Phillips presided over the trial and pronounced sentence after the verdict. The defendant will not be eligible for parole until he serves at least half of the Aggravated Assault sentence.

On January 20, 2021, Sherman Police responded to a 911 call about an 18wheeler which had left the roadway and crashed through the Angels of Care parking lot. An eyewitness reported the 18-wheeler was driving north on U.S. 75 when it began to leave the highway. The tractor trailer then traveled through the grassy median, across the access road, and into the parking lot of Angels of Care. The rig struck several vehicles in the parking lot before coming to a stop in a wooded area. Angels of Care worker Karen Mercado, of Gunter, was standing near her vehicle, suffered severe trauma and later died at a local hospital.

The Sherman Police Department’s Critical Accident Investigation Team (CAIT) responded to the scene, along with the Texas Department of Public Safety. The investigation determined that the defendant did not apply the brakes or even steer the rig away from the parking lot. Evidence presented at trial showed the tractor trailer had no operational defects. Sherman Police later search the sleeper compartment of the rig and discovered a baggie con-

taining 1.68 grams of methamphetamine. A D.P.S. Crime Lab analysis of the defendant’s blood showed he had a significant amount of methamphetamine in his system at the time of the accident.

Assistant District Attorney Don Hoover stated, “The defendant denied responsibility for using methamphetamine and operating his 18-wheeler impaired, which took the life of an innocent woman. Instead, he blamed his traveling almost a quarter of a mile without braking, first, on a hung shoelace and later claimed he was choking on coffee. It is clear that the jurors did not believe him.” District Attorney Brett Smith added, “We commend the thorough investigation by both the Sherman Police and D.P.S. Operating a 35 ton truck on the interstate highway under the influence of methamphetamine is a recipe for disaster.”

Kellett was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Don Hover. ADA Nathan Young, DA Legal Assistant Rose Erwin and Investigator Dennis Michael assisted in the prosecution.

the second half in pain as gritty and heroic as anyone could imagine.

Howe, averaging 34.56 points per game (most ever for any Howe team) saw the combination of pouring rain and a limited passing game were drawn out of their rhythm and held to only 21 points. However, the Dogs scored the first points on the game right out of the chute as Haley hit Braden Ulmer on a swing pass where he broke tackles at midfield and raced 54 yards for the first score to give Howe a 7-0 lead after a Jonathan Garcia PAT with 11:00 remaining in the first.

But Blue Ridge wasted no time as running back Ryder Clayton went 57 yards on the second play. After a bobbled snap on the PAT, the score remained 7-6 Howe with 10:12 left in the first.

The Bulldogs next possession ended in a Cooper Jones punt. Blue Ridge was able to capitalize on costly personal

foul penalties and punched it in on a Hayden Marshall 7-yard touchdown run that ended a 9-play drive. The Tigers took their first lead at 14-7 with 6:18 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs drove the field on eight plays on their next possession and set up a goal-to-go situation, but penalties pushed them back to a 4th and goal from the Tiger 25 and Haley’s jump ball pass to Jones in the endzone was intercepted by Hayden Dean. Blue Ridge’s drove the field on eight plays on runs by Darland, Dean, and Clayton and Darland ran it in from the one yard line to shockingly give the Tigers a 207 lead with 10:22 left in the second quarter.

Howe’s next possession ended when Antwone Rattler had the ball ripped from him at the Howe 35 yard line.

Moments later, Blue Ridge capitalized on the turnover when Darland slipped through the middle of the defense for a 31-yard score to give the Tigers a 28-7 lead with 9:21 left in the second.

Howe was again forced to punt, and Blue Ridge took only five plays to go 84 yards before Darland scored his third touchdown of the game on a 2-yarder to give the Tigers a 36-7 lead with 3:48 left before the half.

With the defensive adjustments, Blue Ridge was forced to punt on their first two possessions in the second half, however, Howe was also forced to punt on their first possession. On the Dogs’ second possession of the half, Haley broke free on a run to the left and raced to the endzone from the Tiger 25 yard line. As he dove for the endzone, he landed on his already sore shoulder and was visibly in pain.

Howe was unable to get the call on the 2-point conversion and the score was 36-21 with 4:00 on the third quarter clock.

Howe’s defense again forced a punt, but things began to unravel quickly for the Bulldogs as they were forced to punt on their next possession and a bad snap forced Jones to throw the ball instead of punting it which drew a penalty and gave Blue Ridge the ball at the Howe 22 yard line. But again, Howe’s defense made a stand and Howe took over from their own 15 yard line. Haley, visibly in pain, continued to carry the load and converted a fourth and five by running for 21 yards. Moments later, Rattler appeared to be heading to the endzone to get Howe within 10 points, but the ball popped out and Blue Ridge recovered at the Howe 15 yard line.

The Tigers drove the field and scored on Darland’s fourth touchdown of the night as he went in from the five yard line to end the scoring at 42-21 with 1:23 left.

Howe will travel to Lone Oak (0-9, 04) next Friday which a win and a Bells win over Leonard would put the Bulldogs in the playoffs for the first time since 2016 when Howe made it to the third round before losing to Mineola, 21-7.

Howe is 3-4 overall against Lone Oak. The last meeting took place in 2019 with Howe winning 42-6. The last time Howe played at Lone Oak was 2018 where the Dogs lost 20-12 in an upset.

Texas History Minute William Barret Travis is perhaps one of the most memorable figures from the Texas Revolution and the siege of the Alamo. His name has Ken Bridges since been honored with the naming of TravisCounty, a park in San Antonio, and numerous schools across the state. Like many heroic figures, his life was one fraught with difficulty.

Travis was born in Saluda County, South Carolina, on August 1, 1809. He was the first of eleven children born to farmer Mark and Jemima Travis. He came from a family of pioneers who had settled in Virginia as early as 1627.

Eager for new opportunities, the family headed westward and settled in southern Alabama in 1817. He briefly became a school teacher before gaining his law license through an apprenticeship in 1828.

Everything in his life seemed to be going in his direction at this point. He was ambitious, becoming steadily more successful, and making himself an important part of the community. In 1829, his new wife gave birth to their first child. In addition to his law practice, he started a newspaper, the Claiborne Herald. He joined the local Masonic lodge and also joined the Alabama Militia. But in less than two years, he lost it all.

His weekly newspaper turned into a disaster as his continual typesetting mistakes, missed deadlines, and poor decisions pushed the once-promising publication into insolvency. He found himself unable to attract any significant clients to his law firm. Of the few clients he had, he was unable to collect any legal fees or awards. The bills piled up, no money was coming in, and he now faced the suspected infidelity of his wife.

By early 1831, he owed $834 to various creditors, an immense sum at the

time. Unable to pay, he was taken to court and found liable. By March, an order for his arrest was made for the unpaid debts. Buried in debt and on the run from the law, Travis left Alabama in disgrace.

He went to Texas to recover his fortunes. He started a modest law firm at Anahuac, near modern-day Houston.

In 1832, he was arrested following a legal dispute over three slaves who had escaped from Louisiana. The incident touched off a violent encounter with the Mexican Army that left six dead.

In 1834, Travis moved his law practice to San Felipe as relations between Mexico and Texas settlers deteriorated.

By 1835, he was made a lieutenant colonel in San Antonio and ordered to recruit volunteers for the defense of the city, but he found few people willing to join him. In early 1836, troops began reinforcing the old mission at the Alamo, which at that time was just outside San Antonio. By mid-February, Col. James Neill took a leave of absence to attend to his family, leaving Travis in command of about 50 men. One hundred more soon joined, under the command of Jim Bowie.

In spite of Gen. Sam Houston’s orders that the mission be abandoned, Travis and the other men decided to make their stand. He sent urgent appeals for reinforcements. On Feb. 24, he sent an open letter addressed “To the People of Texas and All the Americans in the World,” asking for troops “in the name of liberty, of patriotism, and everything dear to the American character.” He proclaimed, “I shall never surrender or retreat.”

By the time the final siege started, there were only 188 defenders at the Alamo, compared to the thousands of soldiers attacking the mission. On March 6, the final attack started, and the men of the Alamo faced their destiny. Travis died at the Alamo on that fateful day. He lived a short 26 years, but in one fateful moment in history, he became a legend.

I finally tracked down the fellow who invented the so-called “pullup.” His name is Lucapher (Big Lou) Saytan. ReJohn Rosemond putedly, Mr. Saytan lives in an underground bunker from which he develops and markets various nefarious technologies, the most notable of which are the so-called “smart” phone and video games.

All kidding aside, a number of years ago, I began to notice an significant increase in the number of parents whose four-, five-, and six-year-old children were still wearing diapers. In every case, it appeared as if an otherwise intelligent child’s toilet training module had crashed.

Before I go on, and to keep the parasites at bay, I am obligated to inform the reader that correlations do not prove cause-and-effect. They point to the possibility of cause-and-effect, but pointing and establishing are two different things.

Therefore, the fact that nine out of ten, by my estimate, of these kids were wearing “pull-ups” does not establish that these highly absorbent loincloths bring about a delay in—including the myriad of problems associated with delay—in self-control over elimination.

But it might. I happen to think there’s a strong link. The name “pull-ups” gives the impression that small children are able to pull it down (and then back up) when they want to use the toilet, which, in my poll, was almost never.

Consider that the “pull-up” is essentially a disposable diaper without tape closures. When a child poops in one, you don’t want him trying to pull it off because, well, use your imagination.

Parents don’t even want to extract a child from a “poopied” “pull-up” because of the massive clean-up job that ensues, which explains why they sometimes cut it off with scissors, which must then be sent to the Centers for Disease Control for sterilization and disposal. Lawyers are reading this,

so I should point out that I was kidding about the CDC. Over the years, I’ve counseled with hundreds of parents who were using “pull-ups” with older preschool children who should have been (and could have been) completely trained by their second birthdays. Yes, thanks to the Freudian toilet training mythology of pediatrician T. Berry Brazelton, the pediatric community promotes the wholly false notion that waiting until well after a child’s second birthday is going to be to the advantage of all concerned. Does it involve more frustration to house train a four-month-old puppy or a one-year-old dog? Hello?

My theory is that because “pull-ups” feel no different from diapers, they often result in the same behavior—to wit, pooping and peeing without consideration of time or place. Furthermore, because of its super absorbent property, a child wearing a “pull-up” experiences little or no discomfort when he/she urinates in it; therefore, the process of toilet training many a “puller-upper” is extended.

Then there’s the matter of using “pullups” with children who have not developed nighttime control. They feel like any other diaper, remember? From a child’s perspective, if it feels like a diaper and smells like a diaper, it’s a diaper! As is the case with daytime control, “pull-ups” can delay nighttime control. Furthermore, as nighttime control is delayed, the habit of peeing while asleep grows ever-stronger, which means the child is likely to have a long-term problem with bedwetting (or, as the case may be, “pull-up” wetting).

Have you noticed that “pull-ups” are now made in sizes that fit school-age children? Doesn’t that speak volumes?

How do we respond to temptation?

The painful truth about any type of addiction and temptation is there was an introduction and a personal agreement to entertain it.

They knew it Dr. Billy Holland was wrong but made the conscious decision to accept it and a cognitive desire to continue. I’ve never known anyone who is trying to recover from an addiction to trip and fall face-first into a bag of cocaine and relapse. Do those with a history of substance abuse accidentally run into syringes of heroin or not realize the dangers of taking oxycodone? No. They surrendered their power to resist, bowed down to their new master, and became a slave to the persuasion of darkness.

I’ve never heard of an alcoholic who opened and accidentally consumed hard liquor thinking it was a soft drink.

People know exactly what they are consuming. When a person goes into a bar or a liquor store they are definitely aware of why they are there. Individuals do not inadvertently become involved with sin, they willingly choose what they want to do. Whatever the situation and no matter how long it's been going on, the reason people search for relief is to dull the agony of reality. To become numb to the truth, to drown out the voice of conviction and guilt, to avoid, to run away and hide from God. Some will never face their fears until it is too late and would rather live in emotional and spiritual captivity than allow God to set them free.

The same principle of free will happens when someone becomes extremely obese. Yes, we have compassion just like anyone that is struggling with any type of problem and we cannot imagine the cycle of discouragement they go through every day. We also realize there are individuals who have hormone issues and other health conditions that are not their fault, but there are others that have simply never said no to their cravings. For whatever reasons, food can become a powerful anesthetic that brings temporary relief by exchanging a sense of euphoria for shackles of bondage. A lack of accountability and self-discipline has serious consequences, to say the least.

Again, no one has ever forced another person to overeat, they do it because they want to.

I spoke with a woman the other day and she was telling me about taking care of her four grandchildren. The daughter and her husband became addicted to drugs and they divorced. Not long after this, the daughter brought her children to stay with this woman and her husband and they have not seen her since. This was four years ago. These grandparents have full custody but are struggling to raise these beautiful kids because they are on a limited income. Sadly, there are many parents that have abandoned their little ones, and far too often addiction and incarceration are a part of the equation.

It’s a heartbreaking scenario and we wonder how anyone could love some type of desire more than their own children or anything else. It’s actually the same answer that applies to every decision we all make every moment.

The free will to choose. When Sinatra sang, “I did it my way” he was making a rebellious declaration for most of the entire human race. It’s the arrogant and aggressive proclamation about not caring what God says about sin, I live by my own rules.

Most of us know of someone that is entangled in some type of habit, craving, fixation, weakness, compulsion, or dependency. These behaviors are the result of how individuals attempt to deal with whatever is seemingly overwhelming them. We realize we humans are vulnerable to urges, but we always have the choice to resist or accept. It’s not how many times we are tempted, it’s how determined we are to stand against it. Every idea, thought, and suggestion will receive one of two reactions, yes or no. The enemy of our soul has been given the opportunity to persuade us into making destructive decisions, but with God’s strength, we can learn how to control our emotional impulses which is the way God intended. If we refuse to develop the perseverance to break free from our destructive cycles, our carnality will control us and cause even more misery and disappointment. Though we can try to help others become victorious, each person must realize that trusting God is the key that can open their own prison doors. Those who will not help themselves cannot be forced to change.

By Reed Smith Saratoga County Supreme Court Judge Dianne Freestone ruled on Friday that New York Democrats “exceeded” the state’s constitution by “violating the spirit of absentee voting.”

In her 28-page decision, she reacted to a signed law from former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo which allows someone who is “concerned” about COVID-19 to vote by absentee ballot.

She says Cuomo’s 2020 legislation allows any voter to qualify for an absentee ballot, which violates the constitution.

Her decision will likely take into effect before the 2022 midterm election day, which is only weeks away, but does not affect absentee ballots that have already been cast.

“But [Freestone’s] decision could lead to the overturning of a state law that blocks people from changing their mail-in votes by showing up to cast in-person ballots on Election Day,” the New York Post reports.

“This court is skeptical of such a pollyannaish notion,” Freestone said.

“There is nothing before this court to suggest that the continued overreach of the Legislature into the purview of the New York state constitution shall sunset or that this authority once taken shall be returned,” she added.

A Wisconsin appeals court has upheld a lower court's ruling forbidding the practice of "ballot spoiling," requiring the state's election commission to rescind guidance it had earlier issued on the matter.

Thursday upheld a county circuit court's directive that ordered the Wisconsin Elections Commission to rescind its earlier instructions issued to voters who wished to void their submitted ballot and cast a new one.

That practice, known as "spoiling," is relatively rare in U.S. voting, though upwards of 33,000 voters in Wisconsin spoiled their ballots during the 2020 presidential election, according to

the Associated Press.

That figure constituted about 1% of all votes cast in the state, which Joe Biden won in 2020 by about 0.63%.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission on Friday held an emergency meeting and voted to comply with the court's directives.

Hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin residents have already voted by absentee ballot under the state's early voting rules.

in 2020, with the formation of the Election Integrity Partnership, a Department of Homeland Security-endorsed private consortium that claimed tech platforms took action on 35% of URLs it flagged for election misinformation. The consortium has kept a close eye on Just the News since its afteraction report on the 2020 election listed JTN among other news organizations on the 20 "most prominent domains across election integrity incidents" that were cited in flagged tweets.

JTN showed up in EIP's Oct. 28 blog post on "conspiratorial narratives" on election vulnerability disclosures. The consortium noted Solomon tweeted JTN's report on a University of Michigan computer scientist's warning about a "serious privacy flaw" in Dominion Voting Systems' machines.

"The conversation about the disclosure itself remained largely factual on the platform, though notably it spread primarily among accounts on the right who were already mistrustful of the security of Dominion voting machines," the post said.

In the consortium's Oct. 10-16 weekly report on its activities, it sought to dispel "rumors" about "potential foreign interference in elections" triggered by the arrest of poll worker management systems firm Konnech's CEO on charges related to storing data on Chinese servers.

EIP has a history of trying to knock down allegations of ballot harvesting, regardless of their factual grounding.

While acknowledging that the legality of thirdparty ballot collection and delivery varies by state, and that it can't flag harvesting narratives with "no falsifiable claims," EIP said two years ago the term "harvesting" is "increasingly disassociated with its original meaning and applied broadly to vote stealing

and vote tampering allegations," usually against Democrats.

In an unsigned statement to Just the News, consortium member UW Center for an Informed Public said the EIP did not take action to encourage Twitter to flag the recent JTN story on ballot harvesting. It emphasized that "platforms are independent entities and make their own decisions about whether and how to respond" to submissions by EIP and others.

This spring UW's Center for an Informed Public aimed to knock down the related narrative of ballot "trafficking" made popular by the Dinesh D'Souza documentary "2000 Mules."

Such rhetoric, the center declared on its web site, "encompasses a potentially misleading framing of ballot collection violations and invites confusion of the ultimate impact of such violations," implying that ballots themselves are "invalid or illegal" and connecting to "terms popular in conspiracy theory communities."

In a spring presentation on the consortium's "rapid response coding schema" in anticipation of the 2022 midterm elections, a CIP researcher said they did a "small scale proof-of-concept test with the codebook" on the phrases "ballot trafficking" and "2000 Mules" on Twitter. She said they also worried about "disinformation" that makes people "fearful of becoming vaccinated."

Musk has tried to play both sides of the freespeech debate. In a statement to advertisers, some of whom reportedly threatened boycotts if Trump is reinstated, Musk said he wants to make the platform "a common digital town square where a wide range of beliefs can be debated" without becoming "a free-for-allhellscape, where anything can be said with no consequences!"
