Howe ISD Police Chief in rare company Matt Whitworth, Howe ISD Chief of Police, recently received a Master School Based Law Enforcement Certificate through the Texas School Safety Center.

According to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) there are approximately 80,000 Peace Officers currently licensed in the State of Texas, with approximately 8,000 of those working in schools. Of that group, only 50 hold a Master School Based Law Enforcement Certificate from the Texas School Safety Center, which equates to 0.625 percent of all Texas School-based Peace Officers with this certification.

Howe ISD Superintendent Kevin Wilson stated that the school is proud of Chief Whitworth for attaining this certification and appreciate his leadership of the HISD Police Department.

Howe Community Library summer reading wrap-up Submitted - A great time was had by all at Howe Community Library this summer. June drew record attendance with the Monday programs. Hundreds of children and adults enjoyed exotic animals (including a three-toed sloth and a spider monkey), birds of prey, Rob Holladay, the Magical Balloon Guy, Touch-A-Truck, and the Texas A&M Chemistry Road Show. Residents at Abbington Meadows apartments, Westwood Manor apartments, Pradera, and Summit Hill subdivision enjoyed a weekly story time brought to them via Books-on-the-Move. This was our very first summer outreach program, staffed by Holly King and Kristy Breckon.

After the busy activities during June, the Reading Challenge continued through July. Patrons who read every day earned weekly Sonic coupons, a brag tag, a free book, and their name in a drawing for four grand prizes. The library had lots of readers this year. The library received a total of 768 entries for the four grand prizes, another record for participation. The winner in the Infant through second grade category was Gideon Nitchman; for the third through fifth grades was Judah Burton; for the sixth through eighth grades was Sofeea Brown; and ninth through (Continued on page 5)

Lady Bulldogs win the silver championship in Callisburg Classic The Howe Lady Bulldogs are starting to heat up as they are beginning to stack wins. Their record is 6-15, but much of the losses have been to big competition in tournaments. Over the weekend, Howe won the silver championship in the Callisburg Classic with wins over Savoy and Gainesville.

They also had a win over Sherman on Thursday after losing to Gainesville and Ponder.

On Tuesday, Howe lost to Wolfe City 3-1 with sets of 25-21, 22-25, 17-25, and 17-25.

to keep the Honey Grove Warriors at bay. Bryan used Antwone Rattler as the featured back with 22 carries on the night for 101 yards, but Austin Haley, who is known as the all-time leading passer, not runner, kept the Warrior defense on their heels as he carried nine times for 60 yards. Carson Daniels was used on seven carries and Howe even used receiver Cooper Jones as a power runner throughout the game on short yardage situations.

Howe’s 243 yards rushing yards helped overcome a typical first game filled with penalties and cramps.

But as impressive as the run game was for Howe, it was the defense that kept Honey Grove’s freshman sensation Ryelan Morris in check for most of the night. But the Warriors had their fair share of penalties as well that did not help their cause.

Howe received the ball to start the game and Haley hit Jones on a flare to start the season for the Bulldogs. A slow methodical drive of safe runs and swing passes saw Howe convert several first downs and march the length of the field. However, the drive stalled on the eight yard line, and sophomore kicker Jonathan Garcia booted through his first ever field goal, which was a 25 -yarder to give Howe an early lead of 3-0 with 6:00 remaining in the first quarter.

the ensuing kickoff and Howe recovered it at the Warrior 14 yard line.

Howe made it inside the five on a Haley to Jones connection, but penalties negated it and Howe found themselves pushed back to the 32 yard line. Haley scrambled for a big gainer inside the 10, but again a penalty wiped it out and Honey Grove took over on downs at their own six yard line.

Immediately, fans began to see the brilliance in the combo package of Dion and Ryelan Morris as they combined to for all 94 yards on the drive that took only four plays. Ryelan Morris capped it off with a 47-yard touchdown on a busted play. Honey Grove booted the PAT to take a 7-3 lead with 2:11 left in the first quarter.

Howes’ next possession began from their own 29 yard line and lasted six plays to drive the entire length of the field. Haley hit Braden Ulmer across the middle for a 25-yard gain and Honey Grove was charged with roughing the passer which added another 15 yards on at the end. The drive moved into the second quarter and on the first play, Haley pulled the ball out of the gut of Rattler and went virtually untouched into the endzone up the middle for 12 yards to regain the lead for Howe. Garcia’s PAT was true, and Howe led 10-7.

We also want to thank Abby’s Restaurant, Hana's Cafe, and the Howe Chamber of Commerce for paying for the workers for the Books on the Move outreach program. The Texas State Library and the Institute of Museum and Library Services also purchased supplies for Books-on-theMove, including replacing a very old and tired copier. Thank you again to all those who helped make our summer reading program an incredible success.

ran out on Honey Grove at the end of the first half.

The Dog defense stood strong on the opening drive for Honey Grove where the Warriors were stopped on a fourth down at the Howe 37 yard line. But the Bulldogs also had their drive stall out after nine plays at their own 25 yard line.

Honey Grove’s next possession would end in a Ryelan Morris fumble which Howe recovered at their own 29 yard line. This time Howe’s drive was sustained and eventually punched in the endzone on a Haley to Jones 7-yard touchdown pass. The drive took 13 plays and 71 yards and took over seven minutes off the clock before Haley scrambled on a busted play and found Jones in a game of backyard football.

With Howe leading 17-7, the defense once again forced a Warrior punt where the Dogs took it from their own 49 yard line. Another long drive of 12

plays that took 6:20 minutes off the clock was ended on Garcia’s second 25-yard field goal of the night. Howe led 20-7 with 1:30 left in the game and anticipation of the monkey coming off the back for their first win began to set in.

However, Honey Grove was not done, and Lucan Morrison connected with Dre Patt for a 43-yard touchdown strike just over the fingertips of Haley.

A 2-point conversion by Ryelan Morris pulled the game two within five at 20-15 with 1:09 left.

Honey Grove had only one timeout left and used it, but that could not keep the Dogs from killing the clock in victory formation. At the moment of the last knee, the players from the Bulldogs erupted in joy. Bryan was able to turn on the Victory Light in Downtown Howe by an app on a phone. It was his first career victory as a head coach. The Bulldogs are 1-0 for the first time since 2018 when Bill Jehling began his career at Howe with a 3-0 record.

Howe will host Tom Bean Friday for the first home game of the season. The Tom Cats snapped a 10-game losing streak Friday. Kickoff is at 7:30 pm and the game can be heard live at howeenterprise.com or on YouTube at Studio42.

Texas History Minute

School is starting once again across the nation. Millions of students are returning to classes. It is part of a time-honored ritual, sometimes Ken Bridges loved and sometimes loathed, all in an effort to help make better, wiser citizens and to show students the heights they are capable of reaching. Public schools have been a part of American life for nearly four centuries.

Many ancient societies had systems of learning, and children have been learning from parents from times long since past. The earliest public schools date to Massachusetts in 1635, the first being the Boston Latin Grammar School.

The Puritan settlers believed in education and made it a priority for children to be able to read and write well so they could read the Bible themselves and be able to represent their communities well in town meetings when a community’s spending and priorities for the year would be set by the townspeople. The most important principle of these schools was that not only was every child welcome to attend, they had a responsibility to attend.

In 1636, the first college was founded in the United States. Harvard College was originally set up as a seminary to train future preachers and eventually expanded to become one of the world’s most respected institutions for learning in regard to science, medicine, law, business, and even still today, theology. By the time the American Revolution began in 1775, there were eight colleges operating in the colonies, including what would become Columbia, Yale, and Princeton universities.

After the revolution, many northeastern states were attempting to establish a system of free public schools. Under the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, Congress set aside some proceeds of land sales to give communities in what became the Great Lakes states the means to establish public schools in their own areas. For the Founding Fathers, establishing a lasting republic meant education was a must. Welleducated citizens meant not only better merchants and builders, it also meant good government. Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence made education a priority in his years as governor of Virginia.

However, his efforts to bring education to the people were thwarted by the upper-class planters who would not think of having their children mingling with the poor. Nevertheless, schools spread across the North, and the children of farmers attending school beside the children of wealthy bankers was increasingly a common experience.

Plans for free public schools in Texas began as early as 1829, with the first established in Nacogdoches in 1830.

Many wealthier Texas settlers sent their children to boarding schools in the United States, but several private schools had emerged by the mid-

1830s. In 1839 and 1840, the Republic of Texas passed a series of laws granting lands to the counties for funds to establish public schools, but the effort faltered. Among these laws was the 1839 act calling for setting aside lands to create a national university for Texas, which later became the University of Texas. However, schools would only begin to flourish in the state after the Civil War. In 1862, in the midst of the Civil War, Congress began looking ahead to a time after the war and wanted to give the states the means to set up their own colleges, particularly ones dedicated to agriculture, engineering, and the sciences. The Morrill Land Grant Act provided these funds through proceeds of federal land sales. This legislation ultimately led to the creation of 69 state college systems across the country.

In 1860, there were only 100 free public high schools in the United States.

By 1900, there were more than 6,000.

This number had doubled by 1914.

Many southern states did not have a statewide system of public education before the Civil War and would only establish these schools by the 1870s.

By the early 1900s, school standards varied widely. The quality of education in many areas was very poor, with some schools not having the resources to teach some fields as science. And many teachers were unqualified. Reformers worked to establish teaching colleges in many states and push for compulsory attendance laws across the nation, including Arkansas, to create educators who understood what to teach and how to teach it well. In 1890, only 27 states and territories had compulsory school attendance laws, a number that had increased to 43 by 1914. The efforts would pay off. By 1940, nearly 50% of Americans had a high school diploma, a five-fold increase in just 30 years. In just a few decades, the United States had built the best education system in the world.

The University of Texas did not open until 1883. For the first few years of this college, there was no tuition charged to students. The state also opened what became Texas A&M University by 1871, primarily as an agricultural and engineering school.

State leaders believed that by developing a population of engineers, doctors, lawyers, and other professionals, they were laying the groundwork for the future success of the state.

In 1900, there were just under 1,000 colleges operating in the United States, with 160,000 students. These were a mix of public colleges, private colleges, and church schools. Today, there are more than 19 million students, from dual-credit high school students to citizens well into their 80s attending the more than 3,000 colleges across the nation. At the lower grade levels, more than 3.2 million teachers are at work teaching students reading, math, art, writing, music, science, and especially that there are no limits to their dreams for the future.

An ice cream social at the concession stand will follow the service with Don’s Smokehouse providing ice cream and the ladies of the First UnitHowe will kick-off the week with an 1870s style western gunfight in Downtown Howe beginning at 6 pm. The event is sponsored by Tomlin Investments. Immediately following the gunfight will be the crowning of the Sesquicentennial Queens in a contest sponsored by Independent Bank. To become a queen contestant, click here. Following the gunfight will be games and desserts at First Baptist Church near downtown. At 7:45 pm at Summit Gardens, an 1870s style Murder Mystery will take place. It is sponsored by Tomlin Investments. Seats are limited to 42 and tickets are available for $18.

On Tuesday, Howe will host a Sesquicentennial Parade where entries to be in the parade are free. To register to be in the parade, click here. The parade is sponsored by Lacey Tucker Fairway Mortgage. The parade route will begin at Howe Middle School/Howe Intermediate School Gym Parking lot and travel down Highway 5 to Bulldog Stadium where there will be a Watermelon Feast sponsored by Cory Hernandez State Farm and Sausage on a Stick by the Howe Athletic Booster Club and shaved ice by Chill Out. On Wednesday night, churches in Howe have teamed to hold a Community Worship Service at Bulldog Stadium to begin at 7 pm. Community Bible Fellowship’s band will begin the

On Thursday night, the Chamber will host a dinner sponsored by Legend Bank in Whitewright. The dinner will include a Howe History performance

by Howe ISD students. Students will act out important characters in the history of Howe such as Jabez Haning, Walter Thompson, A.M. Ferguson, Mame Roberts, Charles. R. Thompson, Arthur Boyle, Tony Brinkley, L.B. Kirby, and Norman Wallace. They will also tribute important living figures such as Elmer Schenk, Carrie Waller, Jean Norman, and Steve Simmons.

Friday night is the homecoming game between Howe at Tioga at Bulldog Stadium. Howe’s first ever official football game was against Tioga on September 20, 1935. Howe has a current 11-game winning streak over Tioga in the series. However, the two teams haven’t met since 1948. Sports video producer Faison Garrett will be on-hand to document the game.

Walk-in registration dates set for FREE adult education classes Denison, Texas - Grayson College Adult Education and Literacy welcomes high school equivalency seekers, English language learners and those seeking to refresh their skills in math and reading to register without an appointment for free classes on Wednesday, August 31 or Wednesday, September 7 from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Those interested can simply walk into the Advanced Technology building on Grayson College’s main campus in Denison to enroll. Registration can be completed in most languages with Spanish-speaking staff immediately available to assist registrants.

Registering students should bring a government issued ID. Those aged 18 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and bring withdrawal paperwork from their most recent school. Due to the assessments required for class placement, it can take up to several hours to complete the registration process. Classes are currently being offered in-person and online, and there are a variety of class times available.

Workers’ earnings are directly tied to educational attainment and have a strong correlation to quality of life. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that those with a high school diploma earn an average of $600 more per month than those who haven’t completed high school.

Over a lifetime, that earnings gap expands to hundreds of thousands of dollars. As reported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Center on Society and Health, higher levels of education lead to higher levels of home ownership, health insurance coverage, family literacy, physical activity and better nutrition. Higher community education levels are also linked to lower crime rates and lower rates of pollution.

It has become a tradition at Howe Middle School for the student council to welcome all first repsonders for a

cookout. This year’s event will take place on Friday, September 9 from 11:30 to 1 pm.

Living with children In a 6 – 3 decision, the Killingly, CT, school board recently said “no” to establishing a mental health center at its high John Rosemond school. I imagine most folks, upon hearing that, would be dismayed, maybe outraged. I say, “Right on!” to the Killingly school board.

Where is compelling evidence to the effect that the post-1960s proliferation of mental health services for children and teens has had a measurable positive effect? Since my grad school days, the per capita number of mental health professionals who specialize in working with kids has increased exponentially. Is child and teen mental health better than it was in, say, the 1950s, when the term “child therapy” had less credibility than “space invaders”? No, it is not. In fact, if one uses the child/ teen suicide rate, adjusted for reporting error, the mental health of today’s kids is a whopping ten times worse than it was back in the day when my paralyzing shyness merited no adult concern whatever.

That was the long and short of my therapy. Today, I’d be tested, diagnosed, counseled, and probably medicated. My mother was right, by the way. Today, I’m probably not shy enough, which no doubt qualifies for a diagnosis.

Over more than forty years, I can count on one hand—okay, maybe two—the number of parents who have related success stories. Most people don’t know that practice standards are seriously lacking in the mental health professions. Some mental health professionals are humanists, some are behaviorists, some are this, some are that, and so on. Unlike, say, dentists, the members of each branch practice a particular form of therapy, so all therapy is not equal.

When I was a journeyman psychologist working in community mental health, a colleague of mine gave crystal amulets to anxious children which they were to rub whenever they felt uneasy. His supervisors, all licensed psychologists, knew what he was doing and said nothing. Admittedly, that is an extreme example, but have you ever heard of a dentist telling a person with a toothache to rub a stone when he’s in pain?

The Killingly school board has gotten lots of flack for rejecting the proposal for a school-based mental health center. I say regardless of their reasons, they did the right thing. When and if the efficacy of child and teen therapy has been verified beyond a shadow of doubt (which I doubt is ever going to happen), taxpayer money should be used only for school-based services that have proven to work, not services that might work and then again, might make matters worse.

Why should the mental health professions be held to a lower standard than, say, dermatology? Come to think of it, maybe school-based treatment for acne would improve the mental health of high school students. Something to think about, at least.

I'm not as close to Him as I often think I am. It’s easy to fall into a mindset that all is well with our soul and yet be drifting further away from Him. How does this happen? It has to do with what we are used to. If we have been in God’s glorious presence, then we can also sense when we are distant from Him. The problem is that most people have hardly experienced Him and cannot recognize the difference as they have nothing to compare with. Thus, when it comes to personal intimacy with God, most do not know what they are missing. It’s common for the masses to accept that all there is to being born again is believing there is a God, and that heaven awaits everyone except for a few evil ones who commit terrible crimes. However, the truth about salvation is distorted, and the majority

is not even curious to know what it is.

I’ve said before that either nearly everyone is going to heaven or hardly anyone is going. Why do I say that? Because I cannot see a significant difference between those including myself who claim to be saved, and those who do not.

When we hear about being a living sacrifice for Christ and taking up our cross and following Him, I wonder how many people know what this requires. I would guess that if we interviewed the average person walking down the street and asked if they were going to heaven, most of them would say, “I hope so.” If we asked what they were looking forward to in heaven, we would probably hear things like, “At least I will not have to work anymore” or “I’m looking forward to my mansion and I hope it has a pool” or “it will be nice to be healthy and never die.”

Unfortunately, it is most likely the majority are willing to roll the dice with eternity, and with there only being two destinations they figure they have a fifty percent chance of walking on the streets of gold. My point is the meaning of life is to know and love God and we are discovering that concentrating and obeying Him must be our highest priority. As our love for Him grows stronger, our only desire for heaven will be to worship Him. Let us consider that if we are not infatuated with The Almighty today, why would we look forward to adoring Him in heaven? If we are not living with an awareness of His presence now, why would we be excited to bow down to Him around His throne? The amount of time God is on our minds measures how important He is to us, and if we are not becoming what Jesus died for us to be, then we are being hindered and controlled by our emotions. Serving, loving, and following the world is a dangerous place to be.

You have the power to decide how close you want to be to Jesus. If you are ready to stop living an illusion and realize that genuine salvation has everything to do with surrendering your will to Him, call upon Him now and repent, give Him your heart, and He will become the Lord of your life.

By John Solomon The court ruling clearing the way for Americans to get a glimpse into the reasoning behind the FBI raid on Donald Trump's estate may shed some light on the state of the criminal investigation but likely won't answer many of the substantial legal and political questions bedeviling America.

And that means a drama that exploded unexpectedly in the dead of summer's dog days is likely to drag on for months in the courts of both law and public opinion.

The probe, top Justice Department official Jay Bratt told a court, is in its "early stages." The ultimately discredited Russia collusion probe stretched on for nearly three years, even though there wasn't any real evidence of wrongdoing. And that means this case — which involves questions of whether presidential records were wrongly kept from the National Archives and national security secrets wrongly compromised in violation of the Espionage Act — is likely months from any serious resolution.

If the former president can show that — and presidents have wide latitude to declassify at will without going through the normal process — it could challenge any criminal prosecution under the Espionage Act. By Madeleine Hubbard The FBI said it "routinely notifies" private companies, including social media platforms, of potential threats after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook "decreased" the distribution of the Hunter Biden laptop story right before the 2020 election because of a warning from the FBI. The FBI's defense comes after Zuckerberg appeared Thursday on the "The Joe Rogan Experience" podcast. Host Joe Rogan asked Zuckerberg about how Facebook handled the story first broken by The New York Post involving the questionable contents on the laptop of President Joe Biden's son, Hunter.

The FBI released a statement in response to Zuckerberg's conversation with Rogan.

"The FBI routinely notifies US private sector entities, including social media providers, of potential threat information, so that they can decide how to better defend against threats," the law enforcement agency stated, according to The New York Post.

"The FBI has provided companies with foreign threat indicators to help them protect their platforms and customers from abuse by foreign malign influence actors," the FBI wrote.

The federal agency said it will work with its partners to "keep the public informed of potential threats" but it cannot ask or direct companies to act.

Reports indicate the National Archives were looking for records like letters between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to be returned as presidential records. But a 2012 federal court ruling involving a dispute with Bill Clinton declared that presidents have the "sole discretion" to decide which of their presidential records are personal and that such decisions can't even be challenged by a federal court. The only remedy is a civil procedure in the Presidential Records Act in which the National Archives and an Attorney General seek to force the recovery of disputed documents.

School parent Jim Jacobs said Stetson Middle School removed his son from class for wearing Uggs boots — which were deemed slippers — but allowed a male teacher to repeatedly wear high heels in class.

"So my son gets disciplined for wearing Uggs (which are said to not adhere to the dress code), but boys are encouraged to wear dresses and male

teachers can teach in stilettoes! Really?" Jacobs said. "I called Assistant Principal (James) DeWitt to ask if that was true. He verified it and told me that 'boys dressing as girls and a male teacher wearing high heels is perfectly acceptable and not in violation of the dress code.'"

The school also required his son and other students to remove their American and Blue Lives Matter flag pins while encouraging students to wear Pride flag pins, Jacobs said.

The West Chester Area School District didn't answer Just the News requests for comment.

The Southeastern Legal Foundation posted the 77 pages of employee training material from the winter 2020 "Senior Leadership Series" on "Equity & Access" in Springfield Public Schools.

General Counsel Kimberly Hermann told Just the News it was among a series of tips the public interest law firm received from "concerned parents and educators" in the wake of its antiracism lawsuit, which uncovered the district's "oppression matrix" and training that claims that teaching English and saying "all lives matter" were white supremacist in nature.

The equity and access training opens with a "land acknowledgment" to the indigenous Osage, Delaware and Kickapoo Nations peoples. The goals for the day are recognizing "how your identities show up in your position" and impact work and relationships, and increasing "awareness and understanding of LGBTQ+ terminology and the importance of inclusive practices and schools."

Employees are tasked with matching words such as "privilege," "race" and "gender" to their descriptions, and reviewing a "cycles of oppression" graphic.

They then watch an MTV News video titled "Does Privilege Make You Angry?"

The vast majority of the

training is devoted to LGBTQ issues, however, warning employees they can harm "sexual minority youth" if they aren't careful with their words.

It discourages them from using the long-neutral term "transsexual" because it is "overly clinical, misleading, [and] focuses on sex," and "hermaphrodite" without explanation. Employees can use "queer," however, because the oncederogatory term "is now being reclaimed as an affirming term."

The training encourages employees to post "symbols of support," including HRC and GLSEN symbols, and promote LGBTQ groups such as Gender Sexuality Alliance clubs, claiming "just one accepting adult can reduce the risk of a suicide attempt by 40 percent."
