During the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress authorized spending that allowed schools to serve free meals for all students. Those funds are not authorized to continue for the 2022-2023 school year. As a result, Howe ISD must return to charging for school meals and offering free and reduced-price meals based on student eligibility. Families are encouraged to complete the online Application for Free and Reduced-Price School Meals, available at www.howeisd.net.

Howe Church of Christ has new minister It’s been 24 years since the Howe Church of Christ introduced a new minister to the congregation when Toby Soechting began that role. About three months ago, Aaron Alsbrook began his service as the new minister, but has been known the congregation since 1999. Upon moving to Howe on Mardell Lane in 1998, he was quickly introduced to neighbors Jimmy and

Howe’s Haley awardedAll-Texomaland for the fourth time by the Herald Democrat, honored for third different sport

Austin Haley, an entering senior at Howe High School, was recently awarded his fourth AllTexomaland Award from the Herald Democrat. It was the third different sport that the 17-year-old has been recognized for. Haley was named the starting quarterback for

Howe in 2019 even before stepping foot into Howe High School as a freshman and before having one class. He rewarded his coach’s tough decision by being named All-Texomaland for that season and also again his sophomore season. He eventually became How-

e’s all-time leading passer in yards with 4,005 entering his senior year. Haley played a couple of junior varsity basketball games as a freshman before being called up to the varsity where he’s helped the program

transform from bottom dweller to the playoffs. This past season Howe won a playoff game for the first time since 2006 and would lose to eventual state champion Dallas Madison. Haley was named All-Texomaland his sophomore season as a point guard and shut

down defender. In baseball, Haley’s favorite sport, he played a couple of junior varsity games as a freshman but was quickly called up and the result has been some of the most incredible set of career numbers
