Howe ISD accepts bid to build tennis courts Early voting begins today. In Howe there are three open school board seats. Michael Doty and Tamela Shadden are trying to retain theirs from challenger Chrystal Lawson. Greg Akins’ seat is up, and he is not seeking re-election. Jeff Dailey and Nick Upton are challengers for that open seat. Voting will be at 700 W. Haning Street in Howe at the Howe Community Center/Police Department. Voting for school board is very important. In small towns, the school is the backbone of the community. Let’s take a hypothetical scenario—say a longtime excellent superintendent decides to retire like so many others in the education field. We hope this doesn’t happen, but someday it will. In this scenario, whoever is elected (by those who actually vote) will decide on the next superintendent. In this hypothetical scenario, it would make this election far more important than your general May box check. Research the answers from each candidate which were in last week’s publication and get out and vote. It’s important. ***** ‘Build-to-rent’ is the term and plan by developers that will kill the American Dream. We must stand up to this concept. Howe ISD has considered and discussed building tennis courts for a number of years as Howe students have to travel to nearby towns to practice tennis. Howe ISD Superintendent Kevin Wilson contacted Von Gallagher of Gallagher Construction who offered to help with the bidding process as a general contractor. Gallagher addressed the board on Monday and said he had approached three different firms who were capable of building the project with approved pricing mechanisms. Information was sent to Paragon Construction, Carter Construction, and Hellas Construction as the three companies to bid. The bids for two turn -key courts came in as $451,000 from Paragon, $496,000 from Carter, and $544,000 from Hellas. The recommendation was made to move forward with Paragon due to price which could be reduced based on soil testing. The board unanimously approved Paragon as the construction company with the project beginning in the fall. The location has not been released at this time but will in the near future.
