Under the weather Dogs have game cancelled with Bells due to sickness The Howe Area Chamber of Commerce has cancelled the September 11 BBQ fundraiser for the Howe Fire Department. A shortage of briskets was the main culprit. We were told by a local Walmart store manager that for whatever reason, there’s a large abundance of chicken, but briskets are nowhere to be found. The chamber says that they will try again on the evening of the Christmas parade on December 11. More details later. ***** Quarterback Austin Haley was one of the players who was sick and unable to play Friday. When a friend posted photos of Austin at a birthday party in a restaurant on Friday afternoon, it caused a flood of angry text messages. However, it was stated that the photos were from the previous weekend. His father stated that he hadn’t left the house since Tuesday. Calm down. Thursday after lunch, Howe Head Coach Bill Jehling decided to cancel the game with Bells due to a roster that had been depleted with sickness. Most it appears were not COVIDpositive cases, rather good old fashion strep throat, and general sickness related.
Senior Will Fleming was one of nearly ten Howe players that came down with illnesses during last week of practice. Fleming’s was a non-COVID related illness. Photo by Michelle Carney.
The reason for cancellation came down to a lack of players that created a depth issue should there had been injuries during the game. Jehling was to carry only six linemen
into the game. He shut down the program over the weekend so that everyone could get well. They will resume practice today in preparation for their game at Sanger on Friday night. Howe has a 4-4-2 record against Sanger dating back to the first meeting—a bi-district 12-12 tie in Whitesboro in 1942. Prior to last year’s 35-8 loss at home, Howe hadn’t played Sanger since 1981 or hosted Sanger since 1980.
