Former red dirt gunslinger Pecina, Haley are first team all-district to lead Dogs offense in 2021 We got a sneak peek at this year’s Dave Campbell’s Texas High School Football Magazine. They have Howe picked to finish eighth in the “Little Big XII” (District 5-3A1). Not only will Howe face the district powerhouses, but also will have to travel over 90 miles to Mount Vernon, Mineola, and Winnsboro. But there is that other short drive to Emory Rains… They listed Howe’s players to watch as Austin Haley, Cooper Jones, Matthew Bearden, Jaryn Grisham, Ryan Hough, and Bryce Crosby. The top Howe juniors listed were Matthew Hayes, and Caleb Hix. Mahlon Walker was listed as “Top Sophomore.” ***** The Howe Bulldogs runthrough tunnel will be retired after 12 seasons. It was originally purchased by Texas Farm Bureau through Loretta Anderson in the fall of 2009. The blue-eyed dog had several surgeries over the years and may not have survived another season. But hey, he lasted 84 dog years. The new tunnel purchased by the Howe Athletic Booster Club will be similar except the white face will be gray and the blue eyes will now be red and lit with LED lights. Yes, we know...we know… red is not a school color. EDITOR’S NOTE—This column is reserved as an editorial column and may not necessarily reflect the policy of this publication.

Zac Cater, of Durant, Oklahoma, threw the football 360 times during his senior year of 2013 for his hometown Lions. For the 3-year starting quarterback, the offense was a gunslinger’s dream. After a stellar high school career where he was the QB for the East in the Oklahoma AllState game in 2014, he went on to play at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College for two years before moving back to Durant to play for Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The now-25-year old Cater made the transition from Southeastern Savages as a player to coaching for the Broken Bow Savages in southeastern Oklahoma after graduation. The young coach worked with receivers the first two years and became the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach a year ago. During his time in Broken Bow, the Savages reached the quarterfinal round all three of his seasons there. Last year, Broken Bow played the number one seed Bristow in the quarterfinals and lost 3534 after having a 3428 lead with two minutes remaining. Just like most young

Zac Cater—Howe’s Offensive Coordinator coaches, his goal is to eventually become a head coach and even has one eye on his alma mater of Durant and one day possibly

leading to Lions to victories on Friday nights again. He and his wife Mikayla plan on starting a family
