Even in the middle of a pandemic, over 10,000 1A-4A band students across the state of Texas auditioned in a virtual tryout format for a spot in the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) AllState band. 2398 of those advanced to the area level with 306 of those earning a chair in the state level band. The Pride of Howe’s own Alyssa Sharp was one of those 306. Alyssa, the daughter of David and Sandy Sharp, plays clarinet in the Howe band and just completed her junior year at HHS. She advanced to area her sophomore year but missed the state cut by a few chairs in that audition. That only motivated Sharp
more and she immediately went to work preparing for the 2020 -21 auditions. The hard work paid off and she earned the right to participate in the 2021 all-state concert band under the direction of West Texas A&M University band director, Don Lefevre. Normally this honor would have found Sharp traveling with her band directors to San Antonio in February to participate in the All-State Clinic/ Concert held in conjunction with the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention. However, when TMEA canceled that event and all other in-person events,

Former Howe ISD Board of Trustees President Greg Akins was appointed to fill the seat of recently school board member Josh Vincent who resigned due to the nepotism clause as the district hired his uncle Brad Schnitker as an ag teacher. Akins will serve a one year term, and that seat will be up for election again in May as an unexpired term. His seat, after this year, will carry a remaining 2-year term and will come up for election next May with two other full 3year term seats. They will be separated on the ballot in May 2022.
Greg Akins Akins served as president of the board from 2016-19 which included the planning and development of Summit Hill Elementary School. He decided in early 2019 not to seek another 3-year term after 12 years on the board.
