Seven years ago, we published our first edition under this ownership. Today is number 366 and we’ve learned so much. We’ve made a lot of new friends in the community, and we’ve had some friends call our advertisers to try and get them to turn on us.

But through it all, it’s been a great seven years. We set out to do this to help the local businesses prosper with an inexpensive place to advertise their products. And by looking around, we’ve been a part of that success in our various roles. We also wanted to brag on the Howe kids that get very little exposure from the media companies of Grayson County.

HYSA has new president The Howe Youth Sports Association (HYSA) formed in January of 2019 which brought together all youth sports organizations under one umbrella to make registrations and communications easier for parents in the community. With each organization having their own boards and own bank accounts, the transition has been in progress since the initial formation.

The Howe Bulldogs (5-7) now have some momentum heading into district play by winning three of four games in the Madill Tournament over the weekend.

Howe started with an 8-6 win over Sulphur

and then a 15-5 smashing of Madill.

Howe’s loss (9-6) came on Friday to a very good Lone Grove team. But on Saturday, the Dogs finished out the tournament by shutting out Marietta, 12-0.

City of Howe Council Agenda The City Council agenda is quite lengthy for the March meeting after February’s meeting was cancelled.

On Tuesday, meetings will begin at 5:45 with the Planning & Zoning (P&Z) for the board to consider a request from Howard and Leta Porter for a zone change at 1200 E. FM 902 from SF-1 (single family) to MH1 (mobile home).

At 6 pm, the City Council will begin with consent agenda items considered routine which include the Minutes from January’s meeting, financial statements, cancellation of election, certification of unopposed candidates, and an Oncor Steering Committee Resolution.

The council will host a public hearing for the petition of Howard and Leta Porter on the same request as the P&Z earlier. They will then act upon any decisions made.

A public forum is then open for Ordinance No. 781, a creation regulating the fat oil and grease introduced into the City of Howe’s sanitary sewer system. It provides inclusion into Ordinance NO. 564 sewer and industrial waste regulations; which provides for customer service inspection of; grease interceptors and well basins. providing for a penalty not to exceed the sum of $500.00 for each offense and a separate offense shall be deemed committed each day during or on which a violation occurs or continues.

“When I came to the legislature with strong principles and strong ideas and immediately, they tried to get me to ignore you,” said Rinaldi. “I remember clearly having a conversation with the Speaker of the House who said, ‘legislating is different than governing. Just stick with us and we’ll tell you how things really go around here.’”

Rinaldi said his orientation was more of a brainwashing session where they brought in Democrats to show that the Texas Legislature was more of a fraternity and if everyone acts friendly, then they can move forward on issues.

“Everything was positioned for them to protect themselves from you,” said Rinaldi. “The vast majority of our Republican representatives did and still do and a lot of them are very conflicted by it.”

Turning towards government overreach, Rinaldi posed the question to the audience that if they could speak to themselves in February of last year and try and explain everything that has done to them by their government since March 2020. The statement drew large laughter from Shelley Luther who was in the audience.

Luther was arrested for opening her business last year which provoked her run for the Senate.

“Now I want you to think about Republicans controlled the majority in both houses of the legislature and the governor’s office and

all of that was done to you over the last year,” said Rinaldi.

“That’s a huge problem and we need to change that.”

Rinaldi then outlined how the government went from its primary function of informing the citizens of the facts to keep calm and encourage the population to take responsibility to taking the responsibility of protecting citizens from a disease whether they wanted it or not.

“Covid is bad, but we fought a revolution during smallpox which had a fatality rate of 30 to 40 percent,” said Rinaldi. “They didn’t shut down society. What they said was that if there’s a virus that slightly elevates your chance of dying in a particular year, society is closed. They suspended the First Amendment, the Fourth Amendment, Fifth Amendment, and the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution and the courts upheld it—in the State of Texas—with nine Republicans on the Supreme Court.”

Rinaldi then condemned the unconstitutional executive orders by Governor Greg Abbott who restricted travel, issued a stay-athome order, kept kids out of school, shut down businesses, said You couldn’t work, couldn’t socialize in your own home, and limited worship services. This was all done by Republicans,” Rinaldi exclaimed, but then said the ideas were put in place by Democrats who wanted to disrupt

Rinaldi then hammered House Bill 3 which would put into law more executive powers instead of limiting them.

“This is the most insidious, most insulting and most revolting bill that I’ve seen in all the time I’ve been following the legislature,” said Rinaldi who believes most Republicans thought executive power was abused during the past year.

The author of House Bill 3, Rep. Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, has said the proposal can serve as a starting point for lawmakers to begin to map out what the state’s response should look like in the event of another pandemic.

“After going through the last year of a pandemic and the government reaction to it, we owe Texans a healthy and robust debate about what we agree and disagree with,” Burrows said in a statement to The Texas Tribune. “I filed HB3 so we could have a holistic review of state governance and to make sure we protect our liberties during a state emergency.”

Rinaldi says under the purpose role of the bill it states that it is to strengthen the role of the governor.

“In order to declare a pandemic, the governor needs to believe that there’s an imminent chance that there’s a spread of a disease that affects multiple countries that will cause loss of life or damage or injury,” said Rinaldi who then claimed that the flu could give the governor great power each year. “The worst part of the bill is the civil liability protections for businesses. What this bill says is that it only protects businesses that make a reasonable effort to comply with all federal, state, and local laws, rules, declarations, and proclamations related to the

pandemic. It’s an absolutely absurd bill.”

Rinaldi said that the legislatures feel they can fool the voters if they put guns and religion in a bill and the bill does have religious freedom protection listed, but said it is no different than what is already in law.

Former Texas Senator Don Huffines then spoke about his experiences when he began his first term in Austin. He told the group that upon his arrival in Austin the Lt. Governor, welcomed them to the most exclusive club in the State of Texas and that their loyalty is to the fellow club members and to not do anything to embarrass anyone in the Senate.

“I heard that for four years on and off and I always wondered why they called everyone a member,” said Huffines. “Most people that have served in both places will tell you that Austin is a bigger swamp that Washington. It’s deep and stinky and very vindictive.”

Huffines said he always carried the Republican state party platform with him which clearly outlines what a Texas Republican is and outlines the legislative priorities.

At his introduction meeting with fellow senators, he spoke about the needs of removing business taxes and placed on a path to for all business taxes eventually being paid through the consumer on a sales tax. He also spoke about Constitutional Carry which is the number one priority of the Republican Party during that session. He told the group to put a bill forward so that the citizens could see how they voted on it.

“You know what I heard? Crickets—followed by a fork hitting a plate that sounded like a church bell and gradually four senators got up from the table and left in the middle of the meal and the rest of the night was very awkward,” said Huffines.

Huffines then was called and told to apologize to fellow Republican Senators for trying to hold them accountable to the voters.

“What happens every session is that they are going to go in the back room where all the deals are done and put their feet up on the desk and pull out the whiskey bottle and then say, ‘we’ve got to do something for the grassroots,’” said Huffines. “And you’ll get one or two items and slam a pacifier in your mouth and go all over the State of Texas what a great conservative session they had.”

“You need to know that most of your Republican elected office holders, not all of them, but most of them don’t like you,” said Huffines who mentioned no names. “As a matter of fact, they hate you. They make fun of you.

They belittle you behind closed doors and use you. They are duplicitous liars. They will come back to your district to get your money and brag about how conservative they are. And they want your vote, and they don’t deliver.”

Huffines said they don’t like the voters because they could be held accountable to a campaign promise or the party platform.

“They do like to be accountable.

But just not to you,” said Huffines. “They love being accountable to their money, lobbyist, each other, fellow club members, media, and worst of all what they would talk about almost every meeting and certainly every week who they wanted to be accountable to was Democrats.”

He said with a Republican controlled legislature, they should

hell and the Democrats want to get there today. But we have a lot of RINOs (Republican in name only) that just want to get there next week. But we’re going to the same spot. This is a clear case of good versus evil and tyranny is evil.”

Former Texas Rep Jonathan Stickland finished out the night as he spoke about his experiences in Austin which was similar to the others. He used a copy of the rulebook for Congress but learned that the rulebook doesn't’ seem to matter in Austin. Stickland began to offer amendments to bills which upset the senior members.

Upset that members of the House did not have their votes recorded; he began to ask for a record vote thousands of times which upset the members because they don’t like to be accountable to their vote which is ultimately accountable to their constituents.

“The other thing we started doing is throwing out amendments that came from the Republican Party platform,” said Stickland. “We figured if they were going to kill all the bills in the committees with their Democrat Chairman and all their smokes and mirrors, we could at least offer an amendment on the floor and call a rec-

He stated that Texas has gone from the seventh most pro-life state to 21st under Republican leadership and the budget was increased from $170 billion to over $250 billion. In discussion about lobbyist and staffers, he said, “What the conservative movement has that they will never have is the ability to tell the truth. They have to distort.”

The next meeting will feature guest speakers Shelley Luther and Serena Ashcroft. It will be held again at the First Baptist Church youth building at 100 E. Davis Street in Howe on April 12. The meeting will begin at 6:30 pm with an optional prayer at 5:30.

The Howe Lady Bulldogs (2-4) got off to a nice start in Bonham on Monday afternoon with a 1-0 lead thanks to a leadoff walk by senior Hannah Dwyer and a 2-out double by Alexia Womack. But runs came much harder to come by as the game went along.

With Micaiah Franklin in the circle, she held the Bonham Lady Warriors scoreless in the bottom of the first inning allowing only one walk. But the second inning was a much different story as Bonham put a 5-spot on the board with two singles, a walk, a double, a triple, and an error.

The Howe girls allowed four more runs in the bottom of the third inning and one in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Howe’s second run came in the top of the fifth inning when Dwyer homered on a fly ball to center.

Womack and Dwyer combined for all three Howe hits and RBI. Franklin only allowed one earned run in the game thanks to eight errors in the field by the Howe girls. She walked three and struck out one, allowing six hits.

Railyn Murphy got the final four outs of the game allowing two earned runs with one strikeout, allowing five hits.

Howe will host Gunter on Tuesday, March 16 at 7 pm and will host Blue Ridge on Friday, March 19 at 7 pm.

Once a football commissioner is found, the board will meet to fill the vacant vice president role on the HYSA board.

Sherman Fire Truck Answered Howe Alarm The Denison Herald, Oct. 5, 1921 Damage estimated at $75,000 was suffered by the Howe Grain & Milling Company Tuesday night as a result of fire, the origin of which is not known.

About 7 o’clock Tuesday night the flames were discovered in the main building, but as the little city has no adequate means of fighting fire, the blaze soon spread to the adjoining warehouse where large quantities of grain were stored.

The fire burned during the whole of the night, and according to Fire Chief Andrews of Sherman, who went to Howe Tuesday night, the piles of grain will continue to burn for over a week or more unless a heavy rain falls. For two hours, while the fire was at its height, the red reflection on the

sky could easily be seen from Sherman, and not a few persons from this city went to see the fire.

The largest fire truck of the Sherman fire department went to Howe, but there was no water pressure and nothing could be done. Fortunately, there was no wind and the flames did not spread to the business section of the city. Falling sparks set nearby residences on fire but bucket lines soon extinguished these small blazes and very little damage was done.

It is understood that the company carried partial insurance, but the exact amount could not be learned Wednesday morning.

The Hall & Hare Insurance Company of this city are agents for the company with which the Howe concern is insured, but they would make no statement Wednesday morning.

Luke Lopez, Ryan Hough, Austin Haley, and Carson Daniels all had multi-hit games as Brett Burnett threw five solid innings allowing two earned runs on four hits and four walks while striking out seven.

Thursday night, Dylan Hughs threw a one-hitter in a complete game six innings and collected three hits including a dinger while driving in four runs. On the mound, he allowed no earned runs on one walk and struck out seven hitters. Luke Lopez also had three hits while twin brother Ethan Lopez added two. Matt Hayes added a double.

On Friday, Howe took on Oklahoma’s fifth-ranked Lone Grove and out-hit them 12-10, but the Bulldogs committed seven errors which allowed seven unearned runs. Hough went 3-for-3 at the plate while Haley and Kaleb McNutt also had multi-hit games.

Hayes got the start on the mound and allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks in two innings. Luke Lopez and Daniels finished out the game combining to allow one earned run in five

innings.

On Saturday, Howe got back in the win column in a big way with the 12-0 shutout over Marietta.

Haley went 2-for-3 with four RBI while Daniels and Luke Lopez each had multi-hit games.

Parker Pecina was solid on the mound by striking out three in two innings of work allowing one hit and two walks. Haley then struck out the side in the third inning while Daniels pitched the final inning allowing only a hit.

Howe will start district play tomorrow as they will host the Pottsboro Cardinals (5-6). By looking at common opponents, the teams seem to be somewhat evenly matched.

On Friday, Howe will travel to Pottsboro to complete the twogame series.

The Howe Area Chamber of Commerce is organized for the purpose of advancing the commercial, industrial, civic and general interest of the City of Howe, Texas.

Howe, Texas is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 75, State Highway 5, and Farm Road 902, on the Southern Pacific line ten miles south of Sherman in southern Grayson County. Howe is the highest point between the Red River and the Gulf of Mexico at 873 ft above sea level. The city was originated in 1872. The Howe Area Chamber of Commerce was first organized in 1964, with President Cleon Hamilton. It was reorganized in 1972 with Ray Hamilton as president. In 1984, it was once again reorganized with President James Ogle. In 2015, the organization revamped for the fourth time under new leadership from President Robert Cannaday. The current elected president in 2021 is Monte Walker.

City of Howe SECONDS COUNT IN AN EMERGENCY! That's why the City of Howe has instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification System - an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications.

This system allows us to telephone all or targeted areas in case of an emergency situation that requires immediate action (such as a boil-water notice, missing child or evacuation notices). The system is capable of dialing 60,000 phone numbers per hour. Texas History Minute Lorenzo de Zavala was a man of great ideas. He was an outspoken writer and editor as well as a diplomat, businessKen Bridges man, physician, and statesman.

With all these accomplishments in his short life, he became revered as one of the architects of Texas independence.

He was born in 1788 in the Yucatan in southern Mexico when it was still under Spanish rule. From a young age, it was clear he had a brilliant mind, voraciously reading any book he could find. His family arranged for the best education possible, and he eventually learned to speak four languages.

He started several newspapers as a young man, writing against the Spanish monarchy and its oppressive rule over the region. Because of these stands, he was arrested in 1814. Unswayed, he continued his writings and also began studying medicine. By the time he was released in 1817, he had become a practicing physician.

After Mexico’s independence in 1821, he was elected to the national Congress in 1822 and to the Senate in 1824. He briefly served as governor of the State of Mexico, the largest state in Mexico and briefly served as the secretary of the treasury.

Zavala’s star was rising in the politics of the young Mexican nation.

However, the infighting and intrigues that plagued Mexico in those years soon derailed his career. In 1830, the president was ousted in a coup led by the vicepresident, and Zavala was arrest once again.

Recognizing the danger to his life, Zavala fled to New York. When the government changed again, he returned to Mexico. By 1834, with Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in charge, Zavala was sent as a diplomat to France. But when Santa Anna became a dictator to put

down the unrest in Mexico, Zavala resigned and returned to America.

In 1835 while in New York, he reunited with Stephen F. Austin, whom he had met on many occasions while in Mexico. Austin convinced him to come to Texas.

Zavala settled in what is now Channelview, a Houston suburb, at a home he called Zavala Point.

As the Texas Revolution erupted, Zavala served on the Permanent Council in October 1835 and helped coordinate supplies for the Texas army. To protect themselves from Santa Anna’s despotism, he and others began arguing that Texas must be independent.

Zavala was elected to represent the Harrisburg (modern-day Houston) area in the Convention of 1836.

There, with 58 other delegates, he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2. He led the effort to create a stable constitution, one close to the Constitution of the United States. Thus, the Republic of Texas was born.

Impressed by his accomplishments and his passion for the cause of Texas, the convention chose him to be the interim vice-president, serving under interim President David G. Burnet. He served for seven months until the elected administration of President Sam Houston took charge in October.

Initially, Zavala was selected to accompany Santa Anna back to Mexico to argue for their government to accept the agreements he had made with Houston after his defeat at San Jacinto. Mexico, however, argued the treaties were made under threat and therefore invalid. The outright rejection ended the plan to escort him back.

He died after a sudden illness in November 1836, at the age of 48.

Zavala helped steer Texas through its most desperate days. He would be honored greatly across the state in future years. Legislators named ZavalaCounty in South Texas for him in 1858. Many schools are named for him as well as the State Archives building in Austin.

Looking forward to a glorious reunion I went for a quiet walk the other day, to relax and sort through my thoughts like the stacks of messages and notes on my desk. While gazing at the Dr. Billy clear sky and Holland breathing in the cool air, it dawned on me that it’s been almost five years since my dad passed away. Honestly, it seems like yesterday. I realize that many people grew up without a father or a mother and I’m very sympathetic about that.

Thank God, there are great stepdads and stepmoms that have stepped into difficult situations and have been a much-needed tower of strength and stability in the life of a child. We realize that everyone who manages to enjoy a normal life expectancy will eventually outlive their parents. This means that most of us will be required to go through the heartbreak of saying goodbye to those who were always the center of our universe. Whether you have already walked through this valley or if this event has not yet happened, we will most likely be left to continue in our winter years without our mom and dad.

When my wife Cheryl and I were married, our parents were in their early forties and everyone seemed so young and filled with dreams and expectations. We were in shock when her dad passed away four years later from cancer at the age of 48. She remembers as a tom-boy, crawling under cars and watching him work on them as she had no brothers. She did not have a clue what he was doing but just enjoyed spending quality time alone with him. Working on an old car was probably aggravating to him, but to her, it was exciting as she was like a nurse trying to figure out what type of wrench to hand him next or more than likely what size hammer he needed. Soon after we married, we rented a little house in town and on Saturday mornings after I left for work, her dad would stop by with donuts, and they would have some coffee and talk. Through the years I’ve listened to her mention about how he was such an important part of her security and how she

wishes their time together had been longer.

It does feel strange when I think that my dad is no longer here. I remember the first few months after he passed that sometimes in the evenings, I would pick up the phone to call him. When I would come to my senses, I not only realized he’s not there, but he’s never coming back. These are the moments we begin to understand how fragile life is and how we take our blessings for granted. As we grow older, we begin to accept the reality that our parents will not always be with us along with being reminded of our own mortality. When other people lose a parent we have sympathy for them, but we will never truly know the pain until we go through this personally as we are more closely connected to our mother and father than anyone else in the world. I was glad that I made the extra effort to call and visit with my dad often and I encourage everyone to do the same while you still can.

It’s only natural to feel a sense of loneliness as we miss hearing their voice and listening to their thoughts. You will eventually notice that you have some of your parent’s traits and quirks but that’s alright because it makes you feel closer to them and appreciate them more than ever. You will always be filled with their memories as even the simple things like your dad mowing the yard and watching his favorite team or your mom putting the food on the table and giving you a big hug. There is a poem by Diana Der-Hovanessian called, “Shifting the sun” and she expresses so beautifully about losing a parent. Here is one of the lines, “When a parent dies, you lose your umbrella against bad weather, they take your childhood with them and your sun shifts forever.” I cannot communicate as eloquently as she, but just as we will follow in the natural cycles and seasons of life and death, we are also filled with hope and joy to know this life is not the end of our journey. For those who are born-again in Christ, our salvation includes the exciting and encouraging promise that one day we will be reunited with our parents forever.

Spring clean your finances Hey Taylor: I got my husband to commit to what I’m calling “financial spring cleaning.” We’re Taylor going to focus Kovar on getting our finances in better order leading up to the summer. Any tips for where we should start? - Danielle Hey Danielle: I like that! Everyone should engage in a little financial spring cleaning. There are a lot of things you can do, but I’ll keep it to three main points right now.

Debt. Hard to take any other steps when you have credit cards or student loans tying you down.

It might be hard to pay off all your debt in one season, but it only takes an afternoon to make a solid repayment plan that can have you making big strides and feeling optimistic about your progress. If you have the ability to get out of debt but you’re just dragging your feet, take this opportunity to set yourself free. If you have a lot of outstanding balances and feel overwhelmed, pick one loan and set a goal for when you can pay it off. And, if you have no debt, move on to the fun stuff!

Work on your travel budget.

Whether it’s a summer vacation or a flight to see family at Christmas, nothing upends your finances more than paying for travel without having planned ahead. If you want to get things nice and tidy, you should check airfare prices and start setting money aside so you don’t get caught off guard. If you have the flexibility to put aside a good amount, you can start thinking about a bigger,

Cut back on silly spending. Got a gym membership you don’t use?

Three credit cards with annual fees? A bunch of extravagant appliances that drive your electric bills up? There are a lot of expenses you can cut out of your life without becoming some sort of unhappy hermit. Look at your monthly and quarterly bills and figure out where you might be able to trim the fat a little. Cable bills and car insurance are a good place to start. Maybe look at your grocery spending and then see how much food is getting left to rot in the fridge. A really small change in behavior could save you hundreds of dollars each month.

Living with children Q: My 5year-old continues to throw tantrums when he doesn’t get his way. His father and I are divorced. I have John primary custody.

Rosemond He is with his dad every other weekend, basically. My ex- has very poor emotional control and I’m concerned that our son may have inherited that from him. When he throws a tantrum, I make him sit in a “tantrum chair” in the living room, something I read about in one of your books. It sometimes takes him nearly an hour to fully calm down. Is there anything else I can do to help him get control of himself or should I just stay the course? I’m thinking five years old is too old for tantrums and that there may be more going on with him than I’m aware of.

A: Sixty-plus years ago, it was “unheard of” for a child older than 36 months to still be throwing tantrums; today, it isn’t the norm, but it’s not unusual either.

The difference is due to sea changes in childrearing practices that have taken place since the 1960s, the two most significant of which have been (a) a shift from adult- to child-centeredness in the family and (b) a change in focus from instilling citizenship values to making children happy.

As the result of demonizing (by the media and mental health professional community) and all-but abandoning traditional childrearing attitudes and practices, behaviors associated with the so-called “terrible twos” – tantrums, defiance, impulsivity, separation anxiety – continue to occur past toddlerhood and sometimes well past. In other words, I doubt there’s more going on here than

meets the eye.

A tendency toward emotionality may be heritable to some extent, but even if that is the case, emotional control can be taught. Behavioral predispositions are exactly that: predispositions. Unlike physical characteristics, they aren’t written in stone. So, for example, you can’t change a child’s eye color, but a tendency toward shyness can be overcome.

For whatever reasons, your son is having great difficulty accepting what I call the Mick Jagger Principle: You can’t always get what you want. (For those readers who suffer from deficiencies in rock ‘n’ roll knowledge, that is the title of a well-known song by the Rolling Stones, Jagger’s band.) A “tantrum chair” (or some variation upon it) is my standard recommendation concerning ongoing emotional meltdowns in a child your son’s age. The most important element in the equation is that you enforce in keeping with the “Referee’s Rule”: no warnings, no threats, no second chances, no deals.
