The Howe Lady Bulldogs have yet another head coach—the seventh skipper in eight seasons. Gary Qualls replaces John Edwards who replaced Tiffany Moreland— the only head coach for more than one season since 2015.

One would think with that many leaders, the program would have had little to no suc-

cess, but Howe reached the semifinals in 2015, regional finals in 2016, and one game away from the state tournament in Austin in 2017, and the semifinals again in 2018. Then graduation hit the Lady Bulldogs hard who have seen back to back seasons without making the playoffs— although last year’s

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publishes weekly reports of various illnesses including Seasonal Influenza (Flu) which has remarkably taken a paltriness impact on the United States.

“This pandemic is very real, which is why we need real data. But COVID data maps are filled with flaws and run by for profits that benefit from “lockdown” policies,” said former Clinton Advisor Dr. Naomi Wolf who warned that the country is rapidly moving into a coup situation under the guise of a real medical pandemic. Seasonal influenza activity in the United States remains lower than usual for this time of year. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, this time a year ago

(before the COVID19 outbreak), Texas recorded 1,404 positive specimens for Influenza Type A. This year in the same week, the number has dropped to two.

Howe ISD ended January with 1,207 students which was down 14 from December. The majority of those missing students were from Howe High School. The number which was very high comparably to most months saw students transfer to home school or an online program that opened up at the new semester.

The Howe ISD Board of Trustee election is set for May 1, 2021 and the ballot position draw saw the order come out in the order of Charles Haley, Josh Vincent, Chrystal Lawson, Janie Finney, and Brad Murphy. Early voting begins April 19.

The ISD will begin working on budget for the 2021-22 school year. The first budget workshop will take place at the regular April school board meeting where they will look at revenue projections and the comprehensive plan.

Before the ice storm that shut down school for a week, the ISD only had three new cases of COVID, but there were five more cases added to the list as of last Monday.

Wilson said there were fairly significant, but minor damage from the freeze in comparison to other school districts. The pipe that feeds the water heaters on the athletic side of the high school burst so parts were ordered and completed. At the intermediate/ middle school cafeteria, some damage was also found along with two restrooms. A water heater in the kitchen were also damaged. Water froze at the cattle barn behind Howe High School and a pipe burst at the concession stand.

“We’re fortunate because a lot of schools are not in school today and this week is questionable for them,” said Wilson last Monday.

The board approved one-year contract extensions for Assistant Superintendent Darla Williams, Summit Hill Elementary Principal Clarissia Doty, Intermediate School Principal Mike Segleski, Middle School Principal Clay Wilson, High School Principal Phil Kempson, Technology Director Bryan Brandon, Business Manager Julie Snapp, Band Director Angie Liss, Athletic Director Bill Jehling, Library Director Melissa Atchisson, Director of Operations Brett Williams, and Howe ISD Police Chief Matt Whitworth.

The board approved to commit $2 million from the unassigned $5.8 million from the fund balance towards the stadium renovation. The spending leaves $3.9 million in the fund balance which is still over the 25 percent targeted goal. There was $175,000 leftover previously which will go towards improved fencing at the stadium during the track rebuild.

The board also voted to extend the banking contract with Independent bank.

Declared State of Disaster removes annual rating from school districts Howe ISD Assistant Superintendent Darla Williams gave a report at the school board meeting Monday recapping the Texas Academic Performance Report for the 2019-20 school year. The state was declared a state of disaster due to the COVID pandemic, therefore Howe ISD did not receive a rating. They did meet the requirement for the special education determination status.

The latest results were from the 2018-19 school year where College Ready students for Howe ISD were at 62.7 percent which is 9.7 percent above the state average. SAT/ACT were 7.4 percent above the state average; however, English was 12.5 below the state average and Math was 8.8 below the state average.

Career or Military Ready Graduates are under the state average by 6.4 percent and Industry Based Certifications were at 0 percent compared to 10.7 percent across the state.

Howe ISD Armed Forces Enlistment checked in at 3.6 percent which is below the state average of 5.0 percent.

The 4-year graduation rate is at 88.3 percent which is under the state average of 90 percent. The figure was a drop by 7.6 percent from the previous year. Williams later stated that the reason for the dop was due to the ISD having two students who withdrew, and they never enrolled in their new town. They also had three students who entered the job corps, which counts as a dropout even though it is a state-sponsored program. Those five were the difference in a normal year.

Influenza

Influenza Type B reports from last year were 804 compared to two this year at the same time.

Overall, at this time last year, the cumulative total for Type A was 13,665 compared to 158 this year.

Type B clocked in at 21,052 a year ago compared to staggering decrease to 550 now.

FluSurv-NET sites reported a current cumulative hospitalization rate of 0.6 per 100,000 population. In 2011-12, also a low severity season, the rate was 1.6 times higher at this time in the season.

Perhaps the most remarkable statistic comes in the pediatric death category where the total for the 2020-21 flu season is a total of one death. In comparison, the 2019-20 season had 195 deaths and 2018-19 season had 144. The 2017-18 season had a total of 188 pediatric deaths.

So, what happened to the flu?

Are the mask mandates and social distancing making such a large impact that it has nearly wiped out a yearly illness that sweeps throughout the world? Or are the cases being transferred to COVID -19 numbers? Dr. Birx once said there was no longer a flu. What did she mean?

It could appear that flu hasn’t just vanished into thin air but rather cases could be being mistaken for COVID-19 — or even intention-

ally mislabeled as such. Another theory centers on viral interference, which is the phenomenon in which a cell infected by a virus becomes resistant to other viruses; basically, cells are rarely infected with more than one virus, so COVID-19 could be winning out over influenza.

However, with COVID-19 being such a novel virus, with reportedly only a minority of the population having been exposed, there should still be plenty of room for influenza to spread.

The CDC does not report Influenza deaths as they now report a combination of Pneumonia, Influenza or COVID-19 deaths (PIC).

However, there is a spreadsheet that can be downloaded, but the numbers do not add up when extracting them for PIC deaths. For instance, in 2020, the chart shows there were 561,669 total PIC deaths, but when you add the totals of Pneumonia, Influenza, and COVID-19, the number is much higher at 741,464 which is 179,795 more deaths than the figure in the column. Perhaps there’s a logical answer to the missing column that would negate 179,795 deaths in 2020 and 42,170 so far in 2021.

Stunning numbers from the chart shows the overwhelming leap in pneumonia deaths in 2020 from previous years. In 2020, the CDC reports 351,085 pneumonia deaths compared to 167,385 in

Influenza

As far as influenza deaths, the chart shows a rise from 2019 from 7,467 to 8,914, therefore, more people died from influenza even though there were substantially less cases. The CDC already used the mysteriously low number of flu cases as an impetus to suggest that masks, school closures and social distancing could become the new normal every fall to combat an upcoming flu season as they stated last fall: “If extensive community mitigation measures continue throughout the fall, influenza activity in

the United States might remain low and the season might be blunted or delayed. In the future, some of these community mitigation measures could be implemented during influenza epidemics to reduce transmission, particularly in populations at highest risk for developing severe disease or complications.”

Therefore, the data of the low influenza cases could be used on the public to force mask mandates and social distancing. However, the same data cannot be used to make the same case for COVID19 or pneumonia due to horrific numbers. It’s sort of like the ads on television for a pill that fixes your problem but creates 25 more side effects.

Damage Assessments from Individuals with Property Losses in Grayson County Needed Judge Magers and I are joining Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) in encouraging Grayson County residents with property damage to complete the Self Reporting Damage Survey referenced below.

This will help the state identify damages across Texas and help emergency management officials gain an understanding of damages that occurred during the recent winter weather. This data is also needed to provide information to FEMA and highlight the need for federal disaster assistance for individuals.

Howe Bulldogs off to slow start In the game of baseball, pitchers are always ahead of the hitters for the first few weeks of the sport, thus the reason for a month-long exhibition season for the big leagues. But at the high school level, this kind of leveling off happens with regular season games.

The Howe Bulldogs, with a lineup including four underclassmen, have begun the season 0-4 as Head Coach Ryan Moreau tries to find the right mix before heading into district play in a couple of weeks.

Howe has a lot of lot of talent, most of which is very young, and they opened the season at Van Alstyne on Tuesday with a 10-0 loss where sophomore Austin Haley broke up a no-hitter in the fourth inning with a pop fly single that missed the glove of the Panther first baseman on one of the windiest nights of the year. Howe finished with two hits as junior Parker Pecina later snuck one through.

The Panthers only recorded five hits thanks to the pitching of Parker Pecina, senior Dylan Hughs, senior Brett Burnett, and sophomore Carson Daniels, but they arms didn’t get the help from the gloves as Van Alstyne scored four unearned runs.

The pitching tandem also didn’t help their own cause as they walked nine batters.

On Thursday, Pecina again took to the hill in a 6-2 loss at Anna in their own tournament. Pecina allowed four earned runs in 1.1 innings of work, walking two and striking out two. But the Dogs got a good relief outing from junior Luke Lopez who held the Coyotes to one earned run over two innings, striking out three. Senior Austin Thurman came in and recorded the final two outs allowing only one baserunner.

The Dogs were held to three hits including a double by sophomore Ryan Hough in his varsity debut, and singles by senior Dylan Hughs, and Haley.

The Bulldogs then faced McKinney Christian and took an 8-0 loss where Haley got the start on the mound and pitched two quality innings, allowing one earned run on one hit and struck out three and walked one. Burnett followed with two more identical excellent innings with the exception of one more walk than Haley. Daniels spelled Burnett with 1.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on two hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Thurman closed it out the final two outs allowing only one baserunner.

Luke Lopez recorded both hits for Howe in the game including a double.

The final game of the week was a 19-3 loss, but the bats started to come alive as Hughs went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple and an RBI. Haley also hit a run-scoring double and Burnett hit an RBI single.

Howe allowed 10 unearned runs including the first two and the final eight runs of the game. Hughs got the start and went two innings allowing one earned run on one hit, striking out two. Sophomore Caleb Searcy allowed four earned runs in 1.1 innings. Hough allowed four earned runs in one inning. Junior Kaleb McNutt walked three and allowed seven unearned runs in 1.1 innings and Turman walked one and allowed one hit for the final out.

Howe will play in Whitesboro on Tuesday and will take on Trenton at 2:30 on Thursday at VA and at VA on Friday at 7:30 pm.

season was cut short due to COVID. But Qualls, a 21-year veteran coach, says the goal for 2021 is to again be in the playoffs and thinks the has good enough talent do it.

“We’ve got a lot of raw talent.

There’s a few kids, even senior that have bad habits, but we can tweak that,” said Qualls.

Qualls says he has four pitchers and has been working all fall with junior Micaiah Franklin, freshman Ryleigh Craven, and freshman Railyn Murphy. Junior Harley Brockelman faced seven hitters in a recent scrimmage and struck four out which impressed the new skipper.

Small ball is not the flavor for Qualls style of softball, not that he won’t use that at time. But he says his style is line-drive-based and slashing.

His first coaching job was a Leonard in 2000 where he was assis-

tant football coach and girls track coach. He then went to R.L. Turner where he became the assistant hitting coach. His first head coaching job was at Athens in 2006.

“I love the game. To me there’s not a better game on the planet because it’s fast paced, it’s strategic and you better have your stuff in a good bucket to keep up with it,” said Qualls.

The Howe girls won their first game of the year against Collinsville behind Franklin’s 3-inning shutout. Murphy then went two innings allowing one earned run while Craven went two innings, allowing no earned runs. Each pitcher recorded two strikeouts.

At the plate in the 7-5 win, Hannah Dwyer drove in two runs by going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Murphy also went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Chloe Scoggins hit a double and a run scored while freshman Emery Snapp has a 2run triple.

Scholarships application deadline March 21 for nurse aide training at Grayson College Denison, Texas - March 21 is the deadline to apply for a full tuition scholarship for Certified Nurse Aide training at Grayson College.

Scholarship funding is available thanks to an on-going grant from the Texas Workforce Commission’s Skills Development Fund COVID-19 Special Initiative program. These scholarships are intended to assist individuals and employers by providing the training needed to quickly enter the workforce in the essential healthcare industry.

“Grayson College is proud to be the only college in the state to use COVID-19 Special Initiative funds to provide workforce training scholarships in our community,” GC President Dr. Jeremy McMillen said. “This funding makes vital training in highdemand healthcare occupations available to more students, meet local employers’ needs and support the economy across Texoma.”

Scholarship acceptance requires successful completion of the Certified Nurse Aide program. Scholarship recipients must also seek employment as a Certified Nurse Aide immediately following successful course completion.

Scholarships are available for any of four upcoming Certified Nurse Aide training courses: April 26 to June 3; May 24 to July 1; June 28 to August 4 or June 29 to August 5. All training will be held using a hybrid model. Most coursework will be completed online with limited in-person classes to fulfill

To date, 97 students have benefited from the Skills Development Fund COVID-19 Special Initiative scholarships. Those receiving the full tuition scholarship receive job search assistance as a complement to the training.

The Howe Area Chamber of Commerce is organized for the purpose of advancing the commercial, industrial, civic and general interest of the City of Howe, Texas.

Howe, Texas is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 75, State Highway 5, and Farm Road 902, on the Southern Pacific line ten miles south of Sherman in southern Grayson County. Howe is the highest point between the Red River and the Gulf of Mexico at 873 ft above sea level. The city was originated in 1872. The Howe Area Chamber of Commerce was first organized in 1964, with President Cleon Hamilton. It was reorganized in 1972 with Ray Hamilton as president. In 1984, it was once again reorganized with President James Ogle. In 2015, the organization revamped for the fourth time under new leadership from President Robert Cannaday. The current elected president in 2021 is Monte Walker.

City of Howe SECONDS COUNT IN AN EMERGENCY! That's why the City of Howe has instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification System - an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications.

This system allows us to telephone all or targeted areas in case of an emergency situation that requires immediate action (such as a boil-water notice, missing child or evacuation notices). Howe High School Class of 2019 graduate Bethany Masters, now at McPherson College, qualified for All-Conference in an amazing four events (60m (7th), 200m (4th), and 400m (1st), 4x400m Relay (4th). She also qualified for the national NAIA Indoor Track & Field Meet in the 400 meters. Due to COVID-19, qualifiers for the meet were limited to the top 16 athletes declared in each event and must meet or exceed the A or B qualifying standards.

Masters ran a 58.42 in the 400 meters which qualified her at the number 12 slot this past weekend at the KCAC Indoor Championships, at Wichita State University.

The Bulldog women finished in eighth overall with 26 points, while the men tallied 44 points, landing them in the sixth position.

The Bulldogs set 19 new season best marks, 22 personal best marks, had 11 different individuals designated KCAC AllConference in 16 different events, four qualified for the NAIA National Championships, and set 1 new school record. To earn

Texas History Minute The month of March 1836 began with high hopes and idealism for Texas forces trying to free themselves from Mexico, but Ken Bridges a string of military disasters pushed the Texas army to the edge of collapse. In the midst of these losses, one of the darkest incidents of the war occurred as more than 400 prisoners were executed at Goliad.

The Texas Revolution began in November 1835 after long-simmering disputes with Mexico exploded into open warfare. Events in Texas were part of a series of uprisings and rebellions that spread across Mexico, which had the effect of eroding the forces still loyal to the government.

The commander of the Mexican Army, Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, declared in December that any foreign prisoners taken would be immediately executed. Santa Anna was president of Mexico eleven times in its turbulent early history, willing to overthrow elected governments and subvert Mexican law whenever it suited him.

In the meantime, Texas settlers fought several small battles with Mexican forces and attempted to organize their resources. James Fannin, a Georgia native and onetime West Point cadet, served under Gen. Sam Houston, head of Texas forces, to piece together an army.

Houston appointed him as a colonel. In January 1836, Fannin led an expedition toward Matamoros on the south side of the Rio Grande.

When news came in February that Gen. Jose Urrea had taken the city, Fannin pulled back to Goliad to prepare their defenses at an old Spanish presidio Fannin had renamed Fort Defiance.

After the Alamo fell to Santa Anna’s forces in early March and all defenders killed, Houston ordered Fannin to withdraw toward Victoria. Fannin hesitated but ultimately left. On March 19, Urrea’s forces caught up to Fannin. The armies fought at Coleta Creek, but Fannin was outnumbered three-toone. By the next morning, faced with low ammunition and many injuries, Fannin attempted to negotiate his surrender to Urrea.

The Geneva Convention would not be ratified for decades but already standards were expected for treatment of prisoners of war. Fannin agreed to surrender and give up all weapons. Urrea ordered them to march back to Fort Defiance, now under Mexican control. By March 25, Fannin’s 240 men were joined by 80 more prisoners from the Tex-

Urrea had no desire to execute these men and had promised that they would be treated well. He pled for the lives of the Texans, but Santa Anna would have none of it. He insisted they all be shot. Not trusting his general, Santa Anna sent orders directly to Urrea’s subordinate, Col. Jose Portilla, who commanded the garrison.

Portilla ordered his men to take the prisoners out of the garrison on March 27, Palm Sunday, and marched them into a nearby field.

His officers lined up the Texas prisoners, took aim, and fired. A storm of bullets mercilessly cut through everything in their paths, and the Texas soldiers fell to their deaths.

The sight of hundreds of bodies before Portilla and his senior officers was not enough. Several were still alive but wounded, and Portilla ordered them beaten to death. The eighty men wounded at Coleto Creek and too weak to move were then taken out and shot. Fannin was forced to watch the entire slaughter.

He was then taken to the fort and executed.

The bodies – more than 430 men -were then put into a pile and burned. No effort was made at a burial. The remains were left to rot in the field.

A month later, after the Battle of San Jacinto, Santa Anna himself was a prisoner of war, felled by his own arrogance. Certainly thoughts of the slaughter of the prisoners at Goliad and the Alamo came to Santa Anna’s mind. The memories of those deaths were certainly in the minds of the Texas troops, many of whom called for revenge. Instead, he was forced to surrender and to order all remaining Mexican troops out of Texas. Santa Anna was sent to the United States and eventually released. He continued to cast a dark shadow on the unstable Mexican political situation until he was exiled from Mexico for good by 1855. Gen. Urrea, in the meantime, came to despise Santa Anna. Within a year, Urrea was leading an army against him. The effort to topple Santa Anna failed, and Urrea was sent to prison in 1838.

Texas had to face the consequences of the horrors at Goliad. It had lost hundreds of soldiers but also lost talented men ready to put their gifts to use for the future of Texas when the peace returned. Once the war ended, Gen. Thomas Rusk rode out to the site of the deaths. In June 1836, he had his men provide a proper burial. Identification of the individual dead was now impossible, but they were buried with full military honors. A memorial was erected at the site in 1938.

Seeing the glass half-full Local church calendar The older we are, the more we can see how the world has changed.

The Bible reveals the human race is born with a corrupt nature and also has a Dr. Billy lot to say Holland about an evil spiritual enemy that is trying as hard as he can to influence us over to the dark-side. Whatever your political or theological views, we can agree there is much strife within our nation about what is happening and where we are headed. The interesting aspect within many people’s disagreements is how they base their opinions on what someone else has told them.

Since God knows everything, the best answers to all of our problems would be to listen to him, but rarely is this mentioned.

In the midst of our worries and concerns for this country and our family’s future, God is moving and miracles are being seen all around us. Like you, I read the editorial sections and listen to what others have to say, and mostly what I gather is someone repeating over and over how bad everything is. Do we really need to be bombarded with negativity about how the world is falling apart at the seams? It would be refreshing to hear that all is not lost and we can be as bright of a light for Jesus as we choose. Perspective is a key word to consider because it allows us to discern and think carefully about what has been said. When someone relays a story, we should remember they are relaying a view of what they personally believe. For example, when we hear that no one can be trusted in our government and how society is evolving into a mass of mindless zombies, we should realize this is a “glass half empty” view. In reality, there are many kindhearted and loving individuals that are demonstrating what Christ died for them to be. This is not the hour to give up and hang our harps on the willow trees.

Each day we maneuver our way through the daily grind while trying to maintain our sanity at the same time. However, let us be reminded that if we are going to allow ourselves to be an infor-

mation sponge, we should be careful how we interpret what we absorb. I’m not saying the culture does not have serious problems, but we should also not burn down the forest as a way to get rid of the poison ivy. Everyone is not evil and corrupt and neither is every member of the next generation brainwashed with humanism.

No matter what is deemed politically correct, as Christians we still have a spiritual mission to accomplish as our hands fit the hammer and shovel today just as they always did. There is a huge difference between spectators that do a lot of talking and participators that spend their time and energy trying to make a positive difference.

Another word is discernment.

There are so many different ideas, but we have been commanded to be sensitive enough to know what is right and wrong. Let us stop and consider the danger of being controlled with negativity. God is not confused, deceptive, a manipulator, or a liar and He cannot fail. He is perfect absolute truth, and the closer we are to Him the more we will all walk in one accord. I recently read a story about a nurse who serves in a Veteran Healthcare facility and how passionate she is about helping those who cannot help themselves.

What about our first responders who risk their lives everyday trying to save others, or the many soldiers who willingly fight in combat so that we can enjoy our freedoms? Maybe instead of pointing out all the people that do not care, we could start identifying and appreciating those who do. Seeing the glass half-full is the result of embracing, learning, and demonstrating the attitude of an optimist. There have always been corrupt and despicable people but be encouraged, the darkness of sin will never overcome the eternal light of God’s compassion and mercy. Self-discipline is associated with the decisionmaking process within our mind as changing the way we think, transforms who we are. May we examine our convictions carefully and be willing to accept and follow God’s truth. Hope and joy are never lost for those who know and trust the Lord.

Finding a fulfilling career Hey Taylor – I’m in between jobs and trying to find some direction. People tell me to find something Taylor that suits my Kovar strengths, but I always second guess what I’m good at. How do I figure out what I do well without just being unrealistically confident? - Elsie Hey Elsie - It’s hard to manufacture confidence, and that’s something overlooked when people are searching for direction. Until you feel confident about what you’re doing, you won’t know if you’re playing to your strengths or not.

Meanwhile, that confidence isn’t going to come until you have experience.

Fortunately, there are multiple ways to assess whether or not you’re good at something. The most important factor to watch for is your excitement level. If you feel passionate while doing the work, even when the work isn’t great, you’re showing a significant strength. It might not be evident in the results, but staying excited and persevering is a talent in and of itself.

The question then becomes will this passion and perseverance lead to a career? This is where many people have a hard time making their strengths fit into a job title. You might be really fascinated by certain elements of web design and photo editing, but you don’t know if you should be a designer or an editor or an animator.

The solution is to ignore the moniker. Not every job will fit all of your strengths, but that doesn’t mean you’re wrong for the position. Every career will come with a learning curve; you should expect to learn on the job while letting your best abilities serve as an entry point. Don’t search for a named role within a company, and instead look for any place

where you can work on something that interests you.

Remember, strengths don’t have to be specific trades like accounting or welding. Listening, problem solving, organizing and communicating are all valuable assets employers look for. I know plenty of people who have landed jobs they initially thought they weren’t qualified for, but they were hired because they had personality traits and skills that can’t really be taught.

So, what do you like to do? When you’re doing that thing or those things, what makes you feel confident about your effort, and what keeps you engaged in the activity? Even if you start by focusing on a leisurely task like reading or gardening, there are still strengths on display. Your love of fantasy novels might not feel like it translates directly to a marketable skill, but it’s not as far off as you think.

We’re typically the best at things we like to do, and that’s where you should start. Consider jobs from your past that have given you moments of excitement, and think about why that was. Eventually, you’ll be able to align your passions and be a few steps away from a great career. Good luck!

Living with children What, pray tell, is COVID parenting? I need to know because over the past few months, several journalists have John asked if I have Rosemond any COVIDparenting suggestions. I went online and, sure enough, a fair number of so-called “parenting experts” are advising parents on how to “survive” shut-downs, as if having children in the home as opposed to attending school is life -threatening. Since when does day -to-day of living with children require a unique set of parenting skills?

After doing some research, I realized that I may well have experienced COVID parenting as a child. There were, after all, days when for one reason or another I was confined indoors. It was raining cats and dogs, for example. Mind you, it had to be cats and dogs for me to be indoors. If merely kittens and puppies, my mother would send me outside. One of her favorite COVID parenting aphorisms was “Water never hurt anybody.”

When I was confined indoors, Mom’s primary COVID parenting rule was, “If you don’t find something to do, I’ll find something for you to do!” I was not allowed to be bored or bother her for any unnecessary reason, which pretty much covered everything. It was easy to not be bored back then. My only electronic device was a record player, so I learned to entertain myself with nothing more than the weird stuff that normally goes on in a child’s head.

The summer of 1952 required maximum COVID parenting only the disease wasn’t COVID; it was poliomyelitis, which is a whole lot worse. That was the summer of the nationwide polio scare. No one really knew how polio was contracted and all sorts of rumors flew, including the notion that polio loved hot, humid weather.

My mother and I – she was a single parent in those days – lived in what is now called the “historic district” of hot, humid Charleston, South Carolina, only it wasn’t

historic back then. Not, that is, unless run down and falling into ruin is historic. Our flat on the second floor of a now-historic home with a Bentley parked in the courtyard was plumbed for cold water only. Anyway, anyone who’s experienced a Charleston summer will appreciate that I was indoors most of that summer, being POLIO-parented.

I really don’t get this “survive” stuff, but then, childrearing has become a soap opera since I was a kid. Mom never seemed the least bit ruffled by me being confined indoors. I left her alone and she reciprocated by leaving me alone.

It was an unspoken arrangement that had no downside for either of us. Mom did not think it was her responsibility to entertain me; therefore, I learned to entertain myself. Believe it or not, children can actually do that.

I think I’ve figured it out. COVID parenting, in the modern sense of the term, is what a mother thinks she has to do when children are underfoot because she has never informed them, in no uncertain terms, that she is not their playmate or personal go-fer and insisted that they entertain and fend for themselves. Today’s moms, to their discredit, think that ignoring their children is bad mommying. So, they don’t ignore and their kids end up thinking mommy is akin to a multi-purpose app one downloads into one’s life and taps into action at whim.

It is the paradox to end all paradox that so many women, supposedly liberated, have enslaved themselves to their kids.

I have to believe that allowing children to run your life is the most demeaning of all forms of submission. But then, I’m just a man. What do I know?
