So long 2020… get on out of here The end-of-the-year edition is usually a fun one to put together as we get to poke through and reminisce of the good times in our community. But 2020 was not as fun to scour as it was an emotional roller coaster. We were faced with mask mandates for a virus, or disease, that has a 97.6 percent survival rate in Grayson County and 98.2 percent in Texas (from Texas Health and Human Services). Most of the positive cases have come from those most dedicated mask wearers. Therefore, a vaccine is now available which presumably would remove the threat, but the Central for Disease Control says the vaccine is not a perfect fix and that individuals should still wear masks and social distance. None of this passes the smell test (no pun intended). The COVID-19 pandemic has been an ideal excuse for America's politicians to undermine our legal system. It has led to attacks on the First, Second, and Fourth Amendments. It has flipped presumption of innocence on its head. It is the excuse for unlawfully compromising our elections. Americans have become weak and apathetic. I would like to blame Mr. Rogers and the nickel defense for the Wussification of America. But I’m afraid we’ve lost what made us who we are as Americans—non-conforming rebel patriots who stand up to tyranny. Even the battle cry, We’re not going to take it was sung by “Twisted Sister.” Where have you gone John Paul Jones? Let’s begin to fight.
