Jones and Catching are HHS King and Queen

The Sanger Indians and the Howe Bulldogs hit, tackled, and sweat all over each other Friday night.

And when the game was over, they lined up and waved at each other due to COVID restrictions. ***** September is typically a hot month, but storms are coming this week. The corn is ripe for harvest and it could be taking place this week. The film follows an 11-year-old Senegalese girl living in Paris who dreams of joining a local dance clique.

Lady Bulldogs lose to Blue Ridge and Gunter

The Howe Lady Bulldogs lost to Blue Ridge in three sets on Tuesday and three sets to Gunter on Friday.

The scores Tuesday in favor of Blue Ridge were 25-14, 24-18, and 25-20. Sierra Copeland led Howe in kills with eight with Hannah Dwyer adding five. Holly Cavender led Howe with all 15 assists and Gracie Lankford led the Lady Bulldogs with seven digs. Alexandra Blount had the

only Howe ace.

On Friday, the Gunter Lady Tigers beat Howe by scores of 2516, 25-9, and 25-9. Copeland led Howe with four kills with Dwyer following with two. Cavender had all seven assists and added the only ace. Lankford was the leader in digs with five.

Copeland also had one block.

Howe will travel to Bonham on Tuesday and will host Bells Friday.

HHS senior athlete of the week The student athlete of the week is Jake Fabacher. He’s involved in cross country, basketball, and track. He’s also a member of the National Honor Society.

He moved to Howe in third grade and credits Mrs. Vanna Foster as a teacher that has inspired him the most.

“She was my third grade reading teacher and she was super involved with all the kids then and I still keep in touch with her now,” said Fabacher. “I think she’s someone I could go to now if I needed something.”

After four years of cross country, he won his first race a week ago.

“It was a good feeling to finally finish first and all the hard work is starting to pay off,” said Fabacher who runs 40 miles per week which will increase to 55 as district approaches.

Fabacher says he’s excited for the basketball season and says he’s been working with new head Coach Jay Forsyth.

“I think the team this year is going to be like night and day from the last couple of years and it’s really going to come out of nowhere,” said Fabacher. “I don’t think anyone is expecting us to be as good as we’re going to be.”

He says he plans to run track in college but is unsure where at this time.

“I definitely won’t figure that out until after track season, but I’m excited for it,” said Fabacher.

Prior to kickoff, Erin Catching was named Homecoming Queen as she again traces big sister’s footsteps. Jordan Jones was named Homecoming King. The cheerleaders wore red shirts honoring America with the game played on September 11.

Sanger’s running back Tallyn Welborn came to Howe with his 393 rushing yards in two games and the new title of Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week by Dave Campbell’s Magazine. The

6’-3”, 245-pound running back is the focal point of the Indian offense and he rushed for 8.1 yards per carry and three touchdowns to spoil Howe’s homecoming.

Sanger, 1-9 a year ago, has a maturing team with experience and looks to compete heavily in their district this season that includes Aubrey, Celina, Van Alstyne, and Krum. Sanger will battle it out with Aubrey for the district title in District 4 in 4A Division II. While Welborn did the work on the ground to the tune of 122 yards on 15 carries, it was his quarterback and slot receiver teammates that picked apart the Howe secondary. Howe ISD Employee Spotlight This week’s employee spotlight is Clarissia Doty, the Summit Hill Elementary principal. With the extreme measures of COVID requirements handed down from the state, Doty said she wanted to reassure parents that the staff understands the situation fully.

“I know that starting for them (the parents) was probably one of the most difficult things in their life that they had to do because who wants to drop their four or five-year-old at a door and walk away,” said Doty. “That is not a good feeling. So, then you add to the fact that they might be a little apprehensive that there’s this virus out there. It was heartbreaking and I felt so bad for the parents.”

Doty said she would tell parents to look at the statistics regarding the virus. Children are being affected a much lesser level than adults.

The Summit Hill Elementary school building is in its second year and due to a shortened school year, it still feels like a pristine building, according to Doty.

“The carpet still looks great since we were only here for a few months last year,” Doty joked.

“It’s good that the kids get to have this. I think it’s something

that they can be proud of. I know they don’t get that they’re in a brand new school, but the town supported that and it’s something we needed and we’re using this space and we love it.”

Doty, a Howe graduate, sees that a lot of former Howe students are now back in the community with their kids now attending Howe ISD. “I think that speaks volumes (about the ISD),’ said Doty.

She explained that with family in Howe, people want to instill the same values that they received from this town and this school.

“You have to model that to people,” said Doty. “They have to feel wanted and that they are cared for and loved.”

She said that if those things are taken care of, they’ll want to come back and be a Howe lifer.

Polk’s election and his inauguration, supporters of Texas’s annexation worked on Georgia new political tacCaraway tics to avoid a repeat of Tyler’s treaty debacle. One of their chief ideas was to balance the annexation of Texas with the admission of Oregon as a non-slave territory.

The other was to engineer annexation via joint resolution of both houses of Congress, a strategy that required only a majority in both houses instead of the twothirds vote needed for a treaty.

The Brown resolution eliminated the debt issue by stipulating that Texas would keep its public lands in order to eventually pay its own way out of its debt. In addition, Brown’s bill provided that Texas could be divided into several states as needed to deal with future “balance” between slave states and free states, and that no slavery would be allowed north of the old Missouri Compromise line. The Brown bill easily passed the House of Representatives on January 25, 1845.

Whigs were eager to leave the disappointment of the Henry Clay defeat behind and jump on the bandwagon of the popular Texas issue. There was less talk of the evils of slavery and war with Mexico and more talk about western expansion and economic opportunity.

The Howe Ex-Students Association met on Saturday morning to discuss the upcoming Howe All-School Reunion which takes place every five years. Due to the pandemic and the uncertainty of availability of school property use, the group decided to cancel the event and move it to homecoming 2021.

passes. Most of the damage on the receiving end came from Zach Shepard who hauled in seven catches for 164 yards and one touchdown. Smart’s other touchdown came in the second quarter on a 65-yard reception by Dewey Terreault.

Howe lost the coin toss and were on defense first. Sanger drove 10 -plays to begin, but a great defensive play by freshman Cooper Jones brought down Smart short of the first down on a fourth-andone. However, Howe was forced to punt on their first possession.

Sanger opened the scoring when they capped off a 9-play, 40-yard drive with a 6-yard Welborn score with 4:53 remaining in the first. Sanger led 7-0 after a Xavier Ortega successful PAT. Howe put together an impressive drive that took over seven minutes off the clock and stretched from their own 29 yard line to the Sanger 22. The drive included a gutsy fourth down call from Howe’s own 37, but it stalled out after 17 plays and Howe came away with no points.

But the Dogs inserted Jalen Thornton into the offense on the drive and the electricity that he brings to the offense gives Howe a true threat to score on any play.

The Indians only took two plays to march the 78 needed yards and 65 of it came on a Smart to Terreault aerial. Sanger led 14-0 with 8:41 left in the second quarter. Howe’s next possession ended on a Thornton punt.

Sanger’s next possession began at their own 30 yard line and it took them eight plays to score when Welborn carried it over from the two yard line. The Indians led 21 -0 with 3:18 left before the half.

Howe wanted to put together a long scoring drive and kill the clock before the half, but a mishandled exchange of the ball by quarterback Austin Haley and Carson Daniels at the Howe 35 yard line which was recovered by Sanger’s Victor Macias. That set up a rather easy score for the Indians that took only two plays and ended when Smart his Shepard for a 27-yard score. Sanger

stretched their lead to 28-0 which became the halftime score.

Howe 5th and 6th grade defeat Melissa, 10-0

Howe had to punt to start the second half and it was returned by Shepard to the Howe 21 yard line.

Welborn continued his touchdown accumulation with his third of the night capping off a 4-play, 21-yard drive. That made the score 35-0 with 8:05 left in the third quarter.

Howe’s next possession ended on a turnover on downs which gave Sanger the ball at their own 30 yard line. But Jordan Jones recovered a fumble to give Howe the ball at their own 25. After another punt, Jordan Jones forced another fumble which was recovered by Howe’s Jordan Troxtell.

But Howe was forced to punt, and the ball went through Thornton’s hands forcing him to run instead of punt. But Sanger was forced to punt for the first time on their next possession.

Howe put together an 11-play drive which included big runs by Daniels, Thornton, and Haley, but the drive ended when Sanger’s Kyle Watts intercepted a Haley pass at the one yard line.

Howe got on the board when a bad snap sailed over new quarterback Avery Walker’s head and recovered for a safety. Howe trailed 35-2 with 56 seconds left in the game.

Howe took the ball at their own 45 yard line and it took one play for the Dogs to score when Haley threw downfield to Thornton who caught the ball at the Sanger 30 and made Shepard miss on a tackle which led to the 55-yard score.

Howe’s 2-point conversion was unsuccessful, and the game ended with the 35-8 score.

Howe was led in rushing by Thornton who tallied 69 yards on 16 carries. Daniels added 37 on 10 carries. Haley was 8-of-14 passing with 100 yards and one touchdown and one interception.

Thornton led Howe receivers with four catches for 72 yards.

Howe will play Pottsboro after the bye week at Pottsboro. The Cardinals have currently won 9straight games against Howe dating back to 2011. Howe’s last win at Pottsboro came back in 1988.

The Howe 5th and 6th grade Bulldogs won a tough game Saturday against the Melissa Cardinals.

Howe scored 10 points in the first half and thanks to their stingy defense that is all they needed.

The Bulldogs kicked off to start the game and forced the Cardinals to punt on their first possession. Howe took over on their 40 yard line and drove the ball inside the Cardinals five before turning it over on downs. Two plays later, Howe sacked the quarter back in the endzone for a safety to give Howe a 2-0 lead.

On the ensuing kick return Riken Cross returned it for a touchdown and then followed it up with the 2 -point conversion up the middle

to go up 10-0.

The game was back and forth the rest of the game with the defense making big play after big play.

Deacon Bender caused a fumble and returned another one 60 yards for a touchdown, unfortunately a penalty nulled the score and Howe took possession on the Cardinal 20 yard line.

Big plays were made across the board by the defense. Rhyin Nativid, Kason Capps, Brevin Mayo, Gage Owens, Connor Roberts and pretty much the entire defensive squad stood out for Howe.

The Cardinals may have been the bigger team but the Bulldogs had the bigger fight in them.

Howe fourth grade flag football defeats Celina Bobcats 24-22 Gavin Snap carried in a touchdown as well as threw a “Hail Mary” to Camden Riley for two extra points.

Ayden Kane had two touchdowns and ran in two extra points. Jackson Culp made a great catch giving the Bulldogs an extra two points. Howe’s defense worked hard to hold the Bobcats to bring home the win.

Texas History Minute The early twentieth century was a major turning point for medicine. New treatments and new vaccines were becoming availKen Bridges able. New understandings of how disease spread and how the human body worked were being uncovered.

And it was starting to become easier to spread this information to the general public how they could better take care of themselves and prevent illness. This time period also saw two of the greatest public health crises of the century: the millions of wounded of World War I and the Spanish Flu Epidemic. Dr. Rupert Blue, the Surgeon General at the time, would lead the effort to preserve the health of the public with these great tests.

Blue was born in North Carolina in 1868 and was raised in South Carolina. His father, an attorney, encouraged him to pursue a legal career and studied the law under him for six months. Blue said he never liked the law and wanted a career in medicine instead. When his father died, he felt he could go his own direction. In 1889, he enrolled at the University of Virginia as pre-med major. He ultimately earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1892.

He joined the Marine Hospital Service in 1893, which later became the Public Health Service.

His early dealt specifically with sanitation issues. He worked to clear out rat infestations in major cities to stem the spread of disease. As a result, Blue created the Public Health Commission of California in 1903, serving as its first president. In 1905, he spent several months in New Orleans organizing mosquito eradication efforts.

President William H. Taft named him as the nation’s fourth Surgeon General in January 1912. Blue changed the focus of the Public Health Service toward research, disease eradication, and educating the public about new medicines and how to better preserve their own health. In 1916, fellow physicians named his president of the American Medical Association, a position he served in for the next year.

Before World War I, most of the deaths of soldiers were caused by disease. When the nation entered the war in 1917, Blue directed efforts to ensure that military camps were free of pests, clearing out swamps, and ensuring that enough vaccines were produced to protect the troops from diseases such as

diphtheria, tetanus, or smallpox.

Congress directed the Public Health Service to provide services for disabled veterans as well, the beginnings of the federal veterans administration hospitals.

At the same time as the military and the Public Health Service planned for the health care needs of returning veterans, the outbreak of the deadly Spanish Flu Epidemic seized the attention of the nation and the world in 1918.

Blue recommended a good diet and covering the mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing but also emphasized what has become known as “social distancing” in 2020: avoiding crowds and wearing masks. His advice was published in newspapers across the country. The Red Cross made 260,000 surgical masks and many cities closed bars, restaurants, and schools, including across Texas.

Some cities banned access to public transportation for those who refused to wear a mask.

There were some who tried to take advantage of the chaos and fear and started trying to sell fake cures and lie about made-up treatments that did nothing. Blue responded, “The Health Service urges the public to remember that there is as yet no specific cure for influenza and that many of the alleged cures and remedies now being recommended by neighbors, nostrum vendors and others do more harm than good.” In fact, a flu vaccine would not be developed until the 1930s.

Still, there were some Americans who ignored Blue and insisted the threat from the pandemic was exaggerated and even protested wearing masks. Nevertheless, more than 500,000 Americans died from the flu. Thousands of Texans died.

As the flu epidemic began to fade by late 1919, Blue urged the federal government to prepare for future epidemics. He proposed strengthening the National Health Service and endorsed the idea of a national health insurance system to ensure everyone could afford access to health care.

Blue stepped down from his position as Surgeon General in March 1920. He remained active in public medicine, serving three years in Europe to help coordinate health care for a Europe still recovering from the devastation of World War I and worked with international organizations on the issue of public health.

He retired in 1932 and returned to South Carolina, ultimately settling in Charleston. He died at age 79 in 1948.

Being ready to give an answer Today, just as there was in the ancient world, there is a need for the people of God to assume the role of a watchman. If Christians do Dr. Billy not share the Holland gospel and warn the world that Jesus is the only hope for our future and is returning soon...who will? The watchman’s call 2700 years ago is still valid today: “The morning comes and also the night!” Yes, the world is in distress and insecurity is increasing on many levels, but there remains one rock that cannot be shaken and that is the Kingdom of God! Many are focused on tribulation approaching, while others are excited and filled with encouragement and joy and yet both camps are reading the same Bible. Some believers are evening star Christians, and some are morning star Christians, but the Old Testament watchman saw both. He had spiritual discernment to see the night, but he was also the first to announce the breaking of the morning dawn.

Likewise, we are to be a realist, while never giving up our confession of faith, for no matter what the world or even the religious voices declare, our security and hope is found in Christ. “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” Hebrews 4:6.

Do people privately ask you about God? Do those around you respect your walk with Jesus and do they trust you to tell them about the Bible? What we say and the way we live has everything to do with our integrity and how effective we are for His kingdom. There is not a shortage of speculations for our future, but my message is focused on the opportunity to repent and allow Christ to purify our heart and fill us with His Holy Spirit. As God’s messengers, did Isaiah or Jeremiah have any more responsibility to speak God’s truth than we have now? Have we been too busy for the great commission?

These questions are not just for pastors and teachers, this is for everyone who proclaims to be a follower of Christ. The concept of being a watchman is not an option, but rather a demand from the Lord to listen carefully, to

know what He is saying, and to do what He says. Soldiers in the military are given orders and are committed to obeying the commands they are given. If a soldier is told to stand guard and they fail, are they not held accountable? Have we been faithful to stand guard or have we been napping? Will our diligence to evangelism and prayer not be a part of our judgment? Have we forgotten the consequences of backsliding and living a spiritually lukewarm life? We cannot afford to slumber as so many people around us are lost and desperately need the Savior.

It’s difficult to follow God’s orders and dedicate our life to repentance, sanctification, intercession, studying, witnessing, and obeying His voice, however, it’s easy to enjoy our blessings. How quickly we can lose our burden for other people’s souls and drift away from God’s presence. Too many distractions from worldly pleasures and not spending enough time with the Lord is the formula for spiritual apathy. It’s time to stop singing “I surrender all” if we do not really mean it.

George Macdonald is quoted as saying. “It is simply absurd to say you believe, or even want to believe, in God, if you do not do anything He tells you.” When people ask, “watchman what of the night” are you prepared to share what the Holy Spirit is revealing to you? God wants to arrange divine appointments but is waiting for someone to develop an interest. Who desires to invite God to rekindle the fire within their spirit and to repent for their distant attitude toward Him? Our relationship with Christ has everything to do with our obedience and we are only playing religious games if we have no intention of walking away from our carnality.

There is no middle of the road if we continue to be comfortable with the routines of our intentional sin. A spiritual watchman is serious about allowing God to transform their life and is always ready to help and encourage others in their spiritual journey. You can give your heart to Jesus this very minute by sincerely asking Him to become the Lord of your life.

How do I slow down, enjoy life, and not start stressing about money again? — Quinn Hey Quinn: Feels impossible, right? Some think if you want to earn a lot of money, it’s a requirement that you give up all your free time and spend every waking moment at the office. Fortunately, I don’t believe that to be true.

Changes can be made to ensure you’re enjoying life. Here are three things I want you to think about.

1. Is it the career or the company? There’s no hard and fast rule with career changes. If you don’t like what you’re doing, you can work hard and get into a new field. The issue is when people mistake a bad job for a bad career.

If the worst part of your day is the commute or a coworker that you don’t get along with, it’s probably not time to start from scratch.

Conversely, if you work at a bank and detest the sight of numbers and the smell of money, you might think of doing a hard reset.

Whatever you choose, make sure you put some serious thought into why it is you want to shake things up.

2. How are you spending your money? The more you make, the more you’ll spend. This is a simple truth for most people, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be smart about it. While buying material possessions provides a quick thrill, have you thought about some services that might actually buy you more time for enjoying your life? Hire a maid to cut back

on the time you spend cleaning or take advantage of a delivery service so you spend less time in the car. If you reorganize and reprioritize your spending, you might find work is actually much more bearable than you thought.

3. What’s your forecast? Take a step back and think about your job, your immediate future, and your long-term goals. Do you want to work less because you’ve had a few stressful weeks, or is the struggle consistently demoralizing? Are you close enough to retirement that you’re just getting a little antsy and want time to move faster? Are you working too hard in hopes of an early retirement, and burning yourself out in the process? With all the work that goes into building your career, it’s easy to get caught up in the process and forget to take inventory of your life. Before you do anything drastic, take a second to reassess.

Your happiest life is out there and you might be closer than you realize to living it. Think about what you really want and what you’re most driven to do, and you’ll find yourself on the right path in no time.

Living with children Q: My 13year-old son’s grades and overall respect for me and other adults – teachers, in particular – John began going Rosemond downhill last year (eighth grade), even before the shutdown.

He began school this year with the same attitude, if not worse. In response, I have taken away most of his privileges, including his phone and video game. When we divorced four years ago, the judge ruled for split custody, so he spends three or four nights a week with his dad. That, unfortunately, is the problem. His father strives to be what you refer to as a “buddy-dad” and will enforce no rules. When he’s with his dad, he enjoys a smart phone, video games, and wears clothing that I associate with sociopaths. I feel like I am constantly taking one step forward and then one step back. Do you have any suggestions?

A: My first suggestion will fall on deaf ears, but they are not yours.

With a minority of exceptions, my second-hand experience has been that split custody arrangements are not in the best interests of children. All too frequently, they lead to exactly the sort of problems you describe.

One parent ends up being a disciplinarian while the other, seeking to be viewed by the child or children as a “good guy,” undoes what his or her ex- is attempting to accomplish at every turn.

Split custody, meaning a 50/50 arrangement (or close approximation thereof), is intended to be “fair” to both parents involved in a divorce. In so ruling, however, family court judges seem to have lost sight of their mission, which is to rule in

the best interests of the children, not the parents. Compounding the problem, split custody also creates the impression that neither lawyer has lost. By issuing rulings that preserve the self-esteem (or, in the case of attorneys, their reputation), judges often, but unwittingly, rule against the interests of the kids.

There’s no viable solution to this sort of problem, in which case I invoke the rule of muddling: Sorry, but you’re just going to have to muddle through this.

Let’s face it, if you and your exwere able to parent cooperatively, there’s some likelihood you would still be married. The first thing you need to do is accept that there is no solution to this problem. Dad is getting reinforced for being a buddy. Furthermore, his incorrigible undermining of your discipline is likely a form of retaliation, in which case we can double his reinforcement. In effect, he’s a coward, but such is the nature of the divorced buddydad.

Accept the realities of your situation, but don’t give up the good fight. Continue to enforce rules when your son is in your care but do so knowing that you’re going to be in a one step forward, one step back state of affairs for some time to come.

There is always the possibility that your son will someday realize that you are the more responsible parent, but don’t count on it. In any event, stay your present course with grace.
