Lazy hazy CRAZY days of summer wraps up 14U Baseball All-Stars heading to state tournament What the heck is going on with the testing numbers? Are they inflated? FOX 35 News in Florida noticed errors in the state's report on positivity rates, the Florida Department of Health said that some laboratories have not been reporting negative test result data to the state. Countless labs have reported a 100 percent positivity rate, which means every single person tested was positive. Other labs had very high positivity rates. FOX 35 News found that testing sites like Centra Care reported that 83 people were tested and all tested positive. Then, NCF Diagnostics in Alachua reported 88 percent of tests were positive. Orlando Health had a 98 percent positivity rate. However, when FOX 35 News contacted the hospital, they confirmed errors in the report. Orlando Health's positivity rate is only 9.4 percent, not 98 percent as in the report. Florida is currently experiencing a surge in COVID19 cases, reporting the state's daily reported cases have gone from about 2,000 a day a month ago to over 12,000. Texas has to remove 3,484 cases as the San Antonio Health Department reported probably cases for people never tested.

The local baseball and softball regular seasons have come to an end. The season used to regularly end around this time back in the 1970s and 1980s when the sport did not usually begin until school was out. But since the early 1990s, the traditional hotweather sport has kicked off in the cold and rainy early parts of March. But at COVID-19 once threatened the entire season and eventually led to a shortened schedule, players, parents, and coaches were just happy to get on the diamond. “We were just excited to put up some kind of season in order to have some sense of normalcy,” said Howe Youth Softball Commissioner Alyssa Thomas. Howe Youth Baseball Commissioner Mike Portman also echoed those sentiments, “To me, it was important to get the kids

active and out of quarantine. These kids have to continue to grow and develop mentally as well as physically and sitting around the house was not a positive situation for them.” Portman said he wishes the season could have been longer but with other sports around the corner, and all-star tournament dates looming, the season had to be much shorter than usual. “I’m just glad we had a season,” said Portman. “It was very iffy there for a while.” Howe will send 10U and 14U teams to the all-star tournaments. The 14U team, coached by Monte Walker, Brad Murphy, and Josh Daniels, will head to the state tournament in Longview on July 31August 2. (Continued on page 4)

Cancel culture Event after event has been pushed back or outright canceled due to the novel coronavirus. The latest to land on the COVID-19 chopping block is the annual Community Pep Rally and the Howe All-School Reunion. Both are planned to take place next year, but the pep rally has become a staple for all-thingsBulldog since the initial event in 2011. Only the 2016 pep rally was cancelled (due to weather) and was made up that year with a Silver Spike Parade before the rival game with Van Alstyne. A make-up scenario cannot be planned at this time, but coordinators are not ruling out the possibility of a parade at a later date. The Howe All-School Reunion was to take place Sept. 11 and 12 this year, but the Howe Ex-Students Association uses the Howe ISD facilities for the event and there is much uncertainty of the availability of that use. The grand reunion takes place on the years ending in five and zero and has been doing so since the 1980s. President of the Howe Ex-Students Association Monte Walker says

the board plans to move forward with the reunion in 2021 on homecoming and will continue its pace for another in the year 2025. The reunion, and the concert especially, provides the funding for the Howe Ex-Students annual schol(Continued on page 2)
