Gov. Abbott closes classrooms for remainder of school year, plans to reopen business

John F. Kennedy—April 27, 1961. The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. That I do not intend to permit to the extent that it is in my control. And no official of my Administration, whether his rank is high or low, civilian or military, should interpret my words (Continued on page 5)

AUSTIN, Tex. (KBTX) – Howe Police Chief Carl Hudman donated blood during the drive on Tuesday.

The Coronavirus pandemic has caused more people to give blood than under normal circumstances. The Texoma Regional Blood Center parked their bloodmobile on Tuesday at the Howe Police Department and was there from 8 am—4 pm. In Howe, the traffic was slow around town and at

the blood drive was also slow according to Lucy Lagway, an employee of Texoma Blood Center. “We’re screening everyone before they come in and taking extra precautions,” said Lagway. “We always clean and sanitize, but we’re being extra cautious.” (Continued on page 6)

Howe Youth baseball and softball seasons remain suspended—not canceled Bicentennial Park’s North Field on Highway 75 has never looked better. With new outfield fence screens and an outfield full of bright green ryegrass, 2020 was supposed to be the year that it finally got done for the 14U class and their home field. But those plans are on hold—at least for now.

with other towns in the league. The season still has a chance to move forward with all of May left and with Dixie moving All-Star tournaments back to July.

Chamber pushes Founders Day back to May 30, Hall of Honor to June 25 Members of the Howe Area Chamber of Commerce board met Saturday morning to discuss the annual Founders Day Festival which was slated to be held on its usual first Saturday in May. However, with the current shutdown situation and Governor Abbott’s orders, it was decided to push the event back to May 30. It will still be held from 2 pm—8 pm in Downtown Howe. Bent Creek, the musical performance, will be there and the chamber is coordinating with the companies that provide the kid train and bounce houses. This year’s Founders Day Festival is slated to be the

largest ever in regards to vendors as both Haning and O’Connell Streets will be blocked off to accommodate the number of booths. The board also decided to push back the annual Howe Hall of Honor and Awards night to June 25 at 6:30 pm. The discussion is to rebrand the event to a formal chamber banquet with a sit-down meal to go along with the awards. The chamber has agreed to purchase yard signs and sell them for $10. The design is black with a white “V” for victory and the hashtag #howeproud on top of the V. They will be used for community spirit during this time.
