Howe can’t catch a break in 234 sign up for youth baseball and softball in Howe football realignment
Being involved in so many things around town, I never thought about what a prolonged sickness would do to everything that goes on in this world. On Tuesday about noon, I began to feel seriously sluggish and it got so bad that I had to cancel a scheduled broadcast of the varsity basketball games slated for Tuesday night. My crewmates were probably not happy about the last-minute notice, but I’ll bet they have some satisfaction that they don’t have the flu. It’s been about 15 years since I’ve contracted the nasty virus, and I had forgotten what a mean creature it is. By Tuesday night during the games, I was at home in bed moaning and thinking if I were 30 years older, I’d surely be staring death in the face. Wednesday midmorning I was able to drive to the doctor and get some Tamiflu and was told to stay off work until Monday. But there’s this little publication that has to be filled. I’d already let down the players and parents by not being able to broadcast the games.
Signups are officially over for Howe Youth Baseball and Howe Youth Softball. Baseball saw 154 pass through the gates to sign up and 80 girls signed up for softball. Baseball had 31 sign up for 6U where the coaches will be Andrew Cross, CJ Mickelson, and Chris Kane. The Howe Bulldogs missed the cutoff for Division II football by six students. Howe High School turned in an enrollment of 356 back in the fall and the UIL placed the dividing line at 350. If that weren’t bad enough, Howe learned this morning that they have been placed in an 8-team district that includes a

powerhouse program in Mineola. Howe knew they’d be the smallest school in any district they were placed, but the district that went east placed them with Bonham (499), Mount Vernon (493), Mineola (493), Rains (474), Winnsboro (461), Commerce (455),
Howe Bulldogs Head Basketball Coach Mike Segleski.
Coaches always press the importance of being a team player and sacrificing something for the greater good or the bigger picture. This time, it was Mike Segleski who has showcased first-hand what that means. When football season ended, Howe Athletic Director Bill Jehling made a head coaching change at the boys varsity basketball level and he asked if Segleski, his football defensive coordinator if he could fill in and take up the role. Segleski made the commitment to do so all (Continued on page 5)
8U has 28 players with coaches being Zack McCollum, Larry Windon, and Levi Burton. 10U has 28 players with coaches being Chris Kane, Sergio Garcia, and Steve Hance. 12U numbers are 32 with Billie Ingram, Jack Phillips, and Josh Murphy selected as coaches.
14U had the most players with 35 signed up. Coaches are Josh Daniels, Kent Lowder, and Monte Walker. Alyssa Thomas has taken over as commissioner for softball and has completely reworked the entire organization from top to bottom and is rebuilding it into something special. Already, they have raised a (Continued on page 4)
