Historic Howe home moved to new location

By Roy English Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong. Keep skunks and bankers at a distance. Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor. Words that soak into your ears are whispered... not yelled. Meanness don't just happen overnight. Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads. Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you. It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge. You cannot unsay a cruel word. Every path has a few puddles. When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. The best sermons are lived, not preached. Most of the stuff people worry about, ain't never gonna happen anyway. Don't judge folks by their relatives. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Live a good and honorable life, then when you get (Continued on page 16)

The 118-year-old former Brooks Farm House was moved to its new location on McBee Road west of Howe. The day after Christmas, one of the oldest homes in the Howe area was transported into its second location after resting on Hall Cemetery Road for nearly 120 years. Chris Cavender lived there for many years until selling to Eric and Janice Akins. Kenneth and Debby Griffin made the most recent purchase and moved the home across fields north from Hall Cemetery Road to McBee Road about nine months ago. It was sitting on wheels until recently being guided to its final destination. The Griffins plan to make the home a country retreat for those

looking to get away from the city. “Eric found a great solution to see the historic home saved by working with the Griffins to relocate and repurpose the structure,” said Chris Cavender. “I know many in the community are pleased.” Billy Lemons of Lemons Truck and Equipment was contracted to do the moving of the 300,000pound historic home. Lemons, 70-years-old, has been moving homes since March 1963 and has been

featured in numerous magazines for moving historic structures. “In 57 years, we’ve moved about 120 two-stories,” said Lemons. The home moving company just relocated one even larger which was the oldest house in Plano, constructed in 1881. The Brooks Farm House was skinned originally with cypress siding which was covered over by concrete board but looks nearly identical. All of the (Continued on page 4)
