menus are those offered with meals provided aboard trains, airplanes, and ocean liners.

Georgia Caraway

This wonderful menu from the Hotel del Coronado is from Thanksgiving Day 1949.

The first printed menu probably appeared in 19th century Europe with the creation of the the earliest luxurious dining establishments as distinguished from taverns and inns. In America, one of the first luxury restauants was Delmonico’s in New York City. By the 1830s, Delmonico’s boasted a 10page menu.

Collectors value handsomely decorated menus, especially those designed by noted artists, These are crossover collectibles as art collectors also seek them out. Autographed menus are also desirable, particularly when signed by famous people such as Presidents and movie stars.

Among the most commonly found

Other specialty menus are children’s menus, occasions commemorating a special event or honoring an individual, and menus printed on dish towels, silk, and precious metals.

This menu from the Hotel del Coronado doesn’t have any prices, but it is fun anyway to see what was being served 70 years ago at one of the ritziest hotels in the United States.
