Keep Howe Beautiful picks up loads of trash on Saturday

Keep Howe Beautiful awoke early Saturday morning and led a large group of volunteers around various locations in Howe picking up trash.

Volunteers from Austin College were also on-hand picking up volunteer credit hours.

The Keep Howe Beautiful program began in Howe in 2013 and has grown over the years to a group with many volunteers willing to clean up the town. Their most recent project has been to construct a flower garden on the premises of Summit Gardens a wedding and event venue.

Bulldogs Davis intercepted an Austin Haley pass which would set up an 11-yard score by Zach Moncier. The extra point was no good and Van Alstyne led 14-0 with 4:02 left in the first.

Howe was able to get in the endzone on the next drive with a 10-play, 70-yard drive that took the game into the second quarter. On the first play of the second, Howe’s score came on a screen pass from Haley to running back Jalen Thornton who electrified the home crowd with a dazzling spinning run that eluded nearly all 11 Panthers on his way to an 18yard score which brought it to 147 with 11:21 left in the second quarter.

With the loss, Howe finishes the season with a record of 3-7 for the second consecutive year under secondyear Head Coach Bill Jehling. Howe has gone 7-23 since the regional championship game with Mineola in 2016. Howe’s three wins a year ago all came in nondistrict, while the Dogs were able to capture district wins this season against Lone Oak and Bonham. They were three minutes away from clinching the playoffs at Commerce two weeks ago when the rains came and washed away the hopes.

On Friday, Van Alstyne opened with a 6-play, 53-yard drive that resulted in a 1-yard touchdown by Jake Carroll. They quickly got into the swinging gate formation for the successful 2-point conversion and the 8-0 early lead with 9:43 left in the first.

Howe punted on their first possession, but Arturo Lowder intercepted a Tymothe Rosenthal pass in the endzone to stop the Panthers from consecutive scores. However, three plays later Drelin

Van Alstyne’s next possession looked to end in Howe’s favor as the Panthers faced a 3rd-and-30 at their own 24 yard line. But Rosenthal threw a prayer to Davis down the sidelines which resulted in a 76-yard touchdown to make it 20-7 with 9:28 left in the second.

Howe’s next possession was intercepted by Cam Montgomery and they capitalized with a 41yard touchdown pass from Rosenthal to Davis to make it 267 with 5:15 left in the second quarter.

Howe then had to punt which set up another score for the Panthers who took only two plays to go 69 yards when freshman Jaden

Mahan ran 16 yards to up the score to 34-7 after a successful 2point conversion from Rosenthal to Davis.

Howe started strong in the second half and quickly scored when Haley hit Caiden Harmon for a 30 -yard touchdown pass ending a 3play, 47-yard drive. Howe’s touchdown narrowed the gap to 34-14 after the Kevin Flores PAT.

The two teams then traded punts and Howe’s Thornton pinned the Panthers deep at their own 7 yard line. However, on the first play, Mahan took it 97 yards for Van Alstyne’s only second half points. They led 40-14 with 2:44 left in the third quarter.

Howe’s next drive started from their own 37 yard line and a deep pass from Haley to Harmon got them in Van Alstyne territory, but the drive stalled out when Howe had a 3rd-and-goal at the Van Alstyne 1 yard line, but ran the “Wildcat” with Thornton as the only back and Howe was stuffed and eventually turned the ball over on downs.

Things got heated on Van Alstyne’s next possession when a snap over Rosenthal’s head resulted in a recovery by Thornton for the Bulldogs. However, an inadvertent whistle allowed Van Alstyne to keep the ball and somehow retain first (Continued on page 15)
