One new business opens, Pride of Howe Drum Major one relocating, one coming walking in sister’s footsteps

I always loathe the end of football season. In Howe, the season now could be referred to as “Aux Gym Weather.” Nothing brings a more subdued face than the thought of the parking area of the aux gym on Highway 5 which seems to only exist when it is cold, rainy, and muddy. Friday night’s game with Van Alstyne was a good representation of how a rivalry can get out of hand in 2019 more so than say, 1991. Nowadays, the players on the teams can trash talk with each other moments prior to the games thanks to social platforms. From what we understand, the amount of garbage being spewed between Howe and Van Alstyne players on Friday afternoon reached a Level 9 status which resulted in a Level 9 situation on the field. In 25 years of broadcasting football games, I’ve never seen that amount of un-sportsmanlike conduct penalties in a game. Something must stop with the amount of verbiage between the two teams prior to stepping on the field. Level 9 is generally not a good place to be. Good Fellas Barber Shop opening in Howe in December. The building formerly known as Chisum’s One Stop has sold and will become a barber shop. The building was sold from Jack Leavenworth to Roger Aleala, Jr. with a closing date soon approaching. With the sale, the current tenant Advantage Business Machines, at the end of their contract, will have to relocate and the city’s economic development group is trying to retain the business in Howe and find a location for them. Good Fellas Barber Shop is relocating from Anna to Howe and is scheduled to open on Dec. 3. With a rising lease cost in Anna, Aleala sought out Howe as an opportunity to purchase a downtown location instead of paying lease costs. The business opened in Anna in 2014 and has a large customer base that Aleala says he’s hopeful will travel to Howe to continue doing business. He also wants to grow his business and pick up as (Continued on page 3)

Bulldogs end season with 13th consecutive loss to Van Alstyne The Howe Bulldogs cannot break the curse of the Silver Spike. It’s now been 19 years since Howe won the rivalry game with Van Alstyne which includes 13-straight losses. The 40-28 loss was much more of a contest than last year’s 60-0 drubbing where Howe had negative yards of offense for the first time in recorded history. This year’s game was not nearly as one-sided which comes with heated rhetoric which led to the 57th edition being marred with penalties and personal fouls. With Van Alstyne’s good possibility of moving to Class 4A a year from now, it could mean a stall in the rivalry for several years while Howe catches (Continued on page 6)

Marissa Agee, a junior at Howe High School, will be traveling to Round Rock this week to compete at the state cross country meet. Howe High School sent two members to the regional cross country meet in Dallas last Monday. Jake Fabacher finished with a 5K personal best time of 18:23.43 which is one sec-

ond behind the school record time set by Jonathan Queen in 2009. Fabacher finished 57 of 170 runners. Marissa Agee finished (Continued on page 3)
