Billy Joe Wheeler's story is a unique one. He's a man who left school in the eighth grade and became a board member of Howe Independent School District and a city councilman for the City of Howe. Born to nomadic dirt farmers, he vowed not raise his kids from town-to-town but used his childhood farming expertise to plant deep and strong roots for his family in one city, one school, and one church. Volunteering for nearly everything and anything that had to do with Howe, his kids, or friends, Wheeler, now 85, lived his life as what community developers refer to as "the ideal citizen."

Wheeler was born in Anna, Texas in 1934 to Marion Frances "General" and Melvina "Mellie" Victoria Wheeler, but didn't stay there long. As a matter of fact, he didn't stay anywhere very long as a child.

"My dad always seen the grass greener on the other side somewhere," said Wheeler.

Their travels took them to East Texas, West Texas, and Stillwater, Oklahoma before finally settling down at Elmont (east of Van Alstyne). His first schooling began when he had to walk four miles as a first grader to Lone Star school near Weston.

"There were trees grown over this muddy wagon trail and I'd walk there every day," said Wheeler.

"Then we moved to Oklahoma and all over. I even went to Howe for a little while."

Wheeler's sense of work came at an early age in the cotton and corn fields with a one-row planter. They had no electricity, only the coal oil lamps that he despised.

"I told my dad when I was 16 that I didn't want to be a farmer," said Wheeler. "He said, 'Son, I wouldn't say that because one day you might be glad to get on the farm.' I said, "I might get on it, but I won't be glad.'"

After working a few years in Dallas after deciding to leave the farm, he met Lucy Loftice in 1955 at Elmont Baptist Church and married her in October the next year. He quit a good paying job with General Motors and moved to Howe to begin his life as a family man.

"I thought if I was going to raise kids, I didn't want to raise them up down there in Dallas," said Wheeler.

He went to work with Fant Milling Company in Sherman who was later purchased by Con-Agra.

"That was good for us because we got a big raise," said Wheeler.

The grand opening event marked the completion of the final phase of major improvements to the community made by Havenpark Capital, Pradera MHC’s management company that is focused on securing and improving manufactured home communities to preserve long term affordable housing for their residents.

Havenpark Capital took over management of Pradera MHC with the goal of investing in the property’s infrastructure to enhance the lives of their residents.

Over the past 2 years, there have been significant investments committed for improvements including fixing and laying sidewalks, trimming and planting trees, adding additional landscaping, full renovation of the clubhouse, and the installation of sports courts, pool area, and playgrounds.

“I’ve lived at Pradera MHC for more than 10 years, and I’m thrilled to see the work that’s been done to improve the overall community,” said Marlena Mickelson. “I am now truly proud to say that I am a resident of this community.”

Dozens of community members from nearby towns attended the grand opening event to participate in the festivities including Pradera MHC residents, leaders from the Van Alstyne and Howe Chambers

“We are so happy at the positive response we have received from community members, as our mission is to provide safe and affordable housing options,” said Felix Tormos, Community Manager at Pradera MHC. “We want to create an environment that fosters community, connection, and respect among our residents.

We thank everyone that joined us for celebrating this milestone as we fill the last few available homes at Pradera MHC.” Pradera MHC also offers residents a wide array of amenities including a clubhouse with a business center, pool, two playgrounds, a basketball court, covered mailboxes, and more.

Havenpark plans additional upgrades as needed on an ongoing basis.

Just north of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Pradera MHC has 218 homes of various sizes within its community. Homes in Pradera MHC are available for purchase or rent. Homes available for rent, ranging from 1-bedroom and 1-bathroom to 4-bedroom and 2-bathroom, are priced from $700 to $1,000. All available homes are model year 2017 and each comes with its own porch, central air conditioning, and shed for storage.

Eugene Clarence White, 1944-2019 Eugene Clarence White was welcomed home to Heaven on July 4, 2019, at Texoma Healthcare Center in Sherman, Texas.

Gene was born in Sherman, TX on Thursday, November 22, 1944, on Thanksgiving Day to parents Eugene Houston and Leah Tuley White. Known to many longtime friends and family as “Sonny” he was raised in the Farmington Community Southwest of Howe.

Gene was a 1963 graduate of Howe High School and received an Associates Degree from Grayson County College. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Howe. Gene married the former Norma Jean Savage in Gunter, Texas on Saturday, April 6th, 1968. They were married 51 years at the time of his death.

Gene joined the U.S. Navy in 1966 and served a tour of duty in Vietnam with NSA Det Cat Lo with the Swift Boats PCF squadron Coastal Division 13.

While serving in Vietnam he was awarded a Letter of Commendation and promoted to a second-class electrician in 1967.

After serving a tour of duty in Vietnam he was stationed aboard the minesweeper USS Observer MSO 461 from 1968-1970 as second class electrician in Charleston, SC. He was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. His last duty station was the US Naval Base at Corpus Christi, TX in 1970 and after that served 2 years in the Naval Reserves. He was honorably discharged on March 13, 1972. He became 100% disabled from exposure to Agent Orange while serving his country in Vietnam.

He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Organization.

He was employed by Texas Instruments first in Dallas and then in Sherman, as a Process Engineering Technician for 32 ½

Gene was a natural born mechanic and enjoyed working on his own cars, building his own engines for his 1969 GMC Pickup. Failing health prevented him from building the last engine to be installed in his truck. That engine Zander Brannon - Ace Defender was built and installed by good friend Kenny Ferguson who preceded him in death. He and his brother-in-law James Savage built and raced their own race cars in the early 1970s. He also loved helping his son Todd build Pinewood Derby cars during Todd’s years in Scouts. He was an avid fan of NASCAR and enjoyed going to races at TMS for a number of years.

He instilled honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic in his children that they have passed down to their children. He always supported his children’s activities in school, whether it be sports, scouts, or going to Camp Fire girls box lunch dinner with Tisha.

He is survived by his wife Norma of the home, children, daughter Tisha Jean Taylor, and husband Brian of Van Alstyne, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Todd page 12

That's why the City of Howe has instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification System - an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications. Texas History Minute The Stinsons, a team of four brothers and sisters, had taken to the skies when airplane flight was still in its infancy.

By 1915, the Dr. Ken sensational flying Bridges Stinsons had come to San Antonio, and their skills as pilots would eventually take them around the world.

Katherine Stinson had already achieved many firsts for women in aviation, including becoming the first woman to fly at night. She would also set several long-distance flying records. By 1915, the family had established a flight school just outside San Antonio, Texas, at what is now Stinson Municipal Airport.

The quartet of siblings, led by Katherine Stinson, the eldest, toured the United States and Canada and became a sensation.

Their fame even brought their exhibitions to China and Japan. In 1917, she flew the first non-stop flight from San Diego to San Francisco, a distance of more than 600 miles – setting a new longdistance flying record.

Their school, however, closed in 1917 as the United States entered World War I; but the siblings had trained more than 100 pilots in the two years the school operated. The airstrip continues to operate as Stinson Municipal Airport. The sisters, Katherine and Marjorie Stinson, volunteered for the army as pilots but were rejected. The family began moving in separate directions at this point. Eldest brother Eddie Stinson was accepted into the army and continued to live in San Antonio training army pilots throughout the war. Both sisters also used their skills as pilots to campaign for the right for women to vote and encouraged more women to become pilots. They also used their aerial acrobatics to raise money for the war effort.

Stinson Aircraft Co. in Dayton, Ohio. He was a respected pilot and had set several flying records of his own. It featured planes he designed and tested himself. His business struggled at first and eventually moved to Chicago.

The most popular of his planes was the single-engine S-1 Detroiter. By 1929, he was selling more than 100 planes each year – an impressive number for a small firm.

In January 1932, he was flying himself on a sales trip when his plane started to malfunction. He attempted an emergency landing on a golf course, but the plane’s wing clipped a light pole, and the craft plummeted. Eddie Stinson died in the crash. His 16,000 hours of flight time was more than anyone else in the country by that point. The company drifted after his death, and the remains were sold to the Piper Aircraft Co. in 1950.

Katherine Stinson’s life changed considerably at the end of World War I. She contracted tuberculosis and went to a sanatorium in New Mexico to recover. While she would survive, the disease had so damaged her lungs that she quit flying. With her breathing limited, it became dangerous to fly at the high altitudes she needed. However, she met a war veteran and fellow pilot named Miguel Otero, Jr., the son of a prominent New Mexico politician. The two married in 1927 and both decided to stop flying altogether.

By the 1930s, she had studied architecture and began designing homes in New Mexico. Many of her designs won awards. She became noted for her efforts restoring and redesigning homes as well. In her later years, she volunteered for the Red Cross. In the meantime, aviation continued to develop and advance.

Living with children I am perennially asked whether I do or do not “believe” in autism. I suspect that on most occasions, it’s a test.

Nonetheless, it’s a fair question that usually takes John Rosemond this form: “I know you don’t believe in ADHD; but do you believe in autism?”

To be clear, it would be absurd of me to deny that there are children – plenty of them, relatively speaking – who frequently exhibit behaviors associated with the bogus diagnosis of ADHD (attention deficithyperactivity disorder). Those kids are problematic, for sure. But no one has ever proven that they “have” something. Childhood behavior disorders like ADHD are constructs; they are not realities.

The spurious claim that these kids “have” something – biochemical imbalances being the number one “have” – is used to sell various therapies, including drugs that have yet to reliably outperform placebos and involve the very real possibility of dangerous side effects.

Sherman man arrested for Possession of Child Pornography On the Wednesday June 26, 2019 at approximately 6:00am, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a residence in the 500 block N. Burdette Ave Sherman, Texas, this warrant stimmed from a lengthy investigation into Internet child pornography.

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office is part of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force program which is nationwide network made up of 4,500 federal, state, and local law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies. Intoxication the theme on Howe Police Report Saturday, June 22 at 1:35 am, Howe Police Officer Oscar Martinez arrested 25-year-old McKinney, Texas for Driving While Intoxicated on Haning Street after stopping him for a traffic violation. Police say the stop and eventual arrest was a result of a citizen’s report that there was a possible intoxicated motorist driving southbound on U.S Highway 75. The officer reported stopping the suspect vehicle after it took an exit onto the west control road and the driver committed a traffic violation. The officer smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the suspect and he subsequently failed a roadside sobriety test, police say.

Wednesday, June 26 at 11:45 pm, Howe Police Officer Oscar Martinez arrested a 40-year-old Sherman man for Public Intoxication on the parking lot of a residence in the 500 block of South Collin Freeway. According to a press release, police were dispatched to the residence because of a report of a disturbance. Upon his arrival, the officer found the suspect and another man were involved in a fight, and the suspect was intoxicated.

Howe ISD has scheduled a dedication/open house for Summit Hill Elementary on Sunday August 11 at 2:00 p.m. Plans are for a short ceremony in the cafeteria and then have the facility open for public viewing.

Thursday, June 27 at 2:10 pm, Howe police Corporal David Morris arrested a 35-year-old Howe man at the Howe Police Department for driving while intoxicated. According to police, the officer saw the man drive onto the police department parking lot off of Haning Street before walking into the police station to turn in found property. Upon meeting with the suspect, Cpl. Morris reported smelling a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on the suspect, noticed the suspect’s speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet.

A subsequent failure of a sobriety test led to the man’s arrest for felony DWI 3rd or more, the press release stated.
