Howe Proud 16-year-olds are lurking around trying to find jobs to support their latest hobbies of driving around and wasting gas. I always thought a young person going on a job interview was a great way to learn about how the real world works.

However, our household found out a lot about the 2019 real world recently.

Our 16-year-old was driven to his job interview by his mother and upon meeting the manager doing the hiring was poked, had his eyelid physically opened, cussed at, and accused of being high.

Farmers meet to discuss wheat varieties and unusually wet year

Each year, local farmers gather to take a look at different varieties of wheat so that they can plant the most favorable crop for the season. Ironically, this year, the gathering was held in a mist of rain in a muddy field.

"If you drive around, you'll see all these empty fields," said Jack Norman of Norman Farms.

With wheat crops being planted in October or early November. If it's not planted by November 15, the farmers cannot get crop insurance.

The corn needs to be planted around March 15 to April. If it's planted after mid-April, the odds of producing a good product diminishes. The Normans were fortunate to get 90 percent of their wheat and corn planted this season which is well above average. Eric Akins, who has grown wheat and corn in the area says he's never seen a wet season like the one we've had since September. The rain took their productivity to 50 percent wheat planted and 50 percent corn planted which is about the norm for Grayson County farmers this season.

Wheat farmers in the area gathered in a local wheat field to review some varieties of wheat that could be good for planting in October.

Each farmer uses more than one variety of wheat each year to protect themselves if one particular variety fails. A wheat variety can fail due to a number of circumstances including some that may be more inclined to being taken over by insects, and some can be favorites of wild hogs.

Norman says that they use four to five different varieties each year in different fields to protect themselves and almost every year they experiment with a new variety of wheat.

"We eliminate one and pick one that is recommended," said Norman. "Every five years, there's an improvement."

It's been 27 years since Howe has had a state champion in track. In 1992 Brad Turner made it back-toback state titles with his high jump of 6'-10". Howe's other state champions are Tania Bement (shot put and discus) and Kyle McKinney (shot put). Two Howe girls were vying to be the first runners from the school to ever claim the title of state champion.

Bethany Masters, a senior, qualified in the 300-meter hurdles due to her runner-up finish at the regional meet two weeks ago. And sophomore Marissa Agee came into the state meet as the number one seed due to her regional championship time of 2:15 which also broke a Howe school record.

The meet, held at the University of Texas in Austin, had an unusual short straight-away and longer curves on each end. Agee, who ran at 6 pm on Friday night, finished sixth overall with a time of 2:17.56. The state champion Jayden Fiebiger of Wall High School finished with a time of 2:14.80.

"I know (Marissa) was incredibly disappointed, but I think it was a good experience for her," said Segleski. "It was an incredible season and I'm very proud of her."

Howe Librarian Terry McLaughlin Retiring After 26 Years When patrons walk through the door of Howe Community Library on any given weekday afternoon, they are greeted with the warm smile of Terry McLaughlin.

McLaughlin, a devoted library employee for 26 years, is retiring May 31.

She recalls a couple of funny things that have happened over the years. One was several years ago after school, the phone rang.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced Wednesday he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $867.7 million in local sales tax allocations for May, 0.7 percent more than in May 2018.

With a new elementary school coming, Simmons says that he's wondered about how that would affect the physical education program. In his first years of being the P.E. coach, Howe had kindergarten through fifth grade in the elementary school. When the fifth graders moved to the middle school on Tutt Street, he would go back and forth between schools, however, the mindset stayed the same, the track meet stayed the same, and the chants stayed the same.

if I were in that situation and moving between campuses, I would imagine it would be the same as before with the same mindset, the same chants. But without knowing, it could become more independent. I don't know if they'll have two coaches. It could kind of progress into really two different campuses with two different identities."

Even with that thought, Simmons insisted that no matter the name of the school, they are all Bulldogs.

Three local students spoke to the Hurricane Creek Rotary Club on Thursday about their upcoming trip to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). Howe will be represented by Amanda Miller who is the current HHS Interact Club president. She's involved in cheer, tennis, robotics, one-act play, and is the vice president of the Business Professionals of America organiation at HHS where she went to state in Excel.

Miller also sings and opens sports games with the National Anthem.

The junior is applying to Texas A&M where she wants to major in biology or pre-med to become a radiologist.

"I'm really excited to go to RYLA and become closer to her fellow nearby students from Van Alstyne and Anna that will be attending with me," said Miller.

Texas History Minute The Flying Tigers were one of the first American air units to fight the Japanese as World War II began. A gruff Texas native, Dr. Ken Bridges Claire Chennault, organized the volunteer force in the months before the United States entered the war.

His determination and success of his pilots drew the attention of the world to an almost forgotten corner of the global conflict. Chennault’s Flying Tigers helped the lay the foundation for the defeat of the Japanese in China.

Claire Lee Chennault was born in Commerce in 1890.

Circumstances, however, led the family to leave for Northeast Louisiana while Chennault was still young. He proved to be a bright student and eventually attended LouisianaState University in Baton Rouge through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program.

In 1913, he left LSU to become a school principal back in Northeast Louisiana. He married, and the two had eight children together. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, he completed his officer training and was assigned to aviation section of the army signal corps to train as a pilot. From there began his love affair with the skies.

After World War I, he returned to Texas for further combat pilot training at Ellington Field in Houston. He spent much of the 1920s as part of an army air corps stunt flying exhibition team and eventually became a combat flight instructor based at Brooks Field in San Antonio by 1928. In spite of his skills, his prickly personality led to conflicts with his superiors and fellow officers. As he continued to be passed over for promotions, he retired from the army in 1937.

In the meantime, Japan had conquered Manchuria in 1931 and was priming to conquer the rest of China. Chennault was recruited by Chinese officials after his retirement to inspect Chinese air capabilities. Soon after his arrival in June 1937, Japan attacked; and Chennault had to quickly rebuild the smashed Chinese Air Force. He recruited pilots from wherever he could find them, trained them, and used whatever planes he could against the Japanese, including both American and Russian. But it was having little effect as Japan continued to advance throughout 1938 and 1939.

By late 1940, Chennault and a delegation from the Chinese government traveled to the United States to make a direct appeal for aid. President Franklin Roosevelt agreed to send 100 P-40 Warhawk fighters. From there, Chennault

recruited 300 American volunteers, including pilots and ground crew, as the First American Volunteer Group, paid at rates significantly higher than the regular military. With few supplies in a distant part of the world, Chennault had to improvise with materiel and tactics.

By August 1941, his men, who quickly became known as the Flying Tigers, were fully organized. In the days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Flying Tigers were in action, shooting down nearly 300 Japanese fighters in a matter of days, mostly in southern China. Chennault won wide acclaim for leading attacks against Japan while America still recovered from the initial attacks.

With the success of the Flying Tigers, the army absorbed the entire group in April 1942, promoting Chennault to brigadier general. Most of what had been the Flying Tigers become the Fourteenth Air Force, expanded, and maintaining the high aerial victory rates. However, Chennault continued to argue with his superiors over policies and tactics. His forces undertook tasks from air support for Chinese forces to preparations for the allied invasion of Burma. In July 1945, he was reassigned to Washington, DC. He retired from the service a second time that October.

He returned to China in 1946 and served four years as president of Civil Air Transport before returning to Louisiana. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1957. He had been a heavy smoker, and little could be done for his type of cancer at the time.

Chennault decided to live his last days to the fullest and took a tour of Europe and Taiwan. By July 1958, his strength was fading, but the air force honored him with a promotion to lieutenant general.

Chennault died a few days alter in a New Orleans hospital at the age of 67.

Chennault was widely honored in the years after his death. He was featured on a stamp in the 1980s.

He was also inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio, in 1972. The Chinese government unveiled a series of memorials and museums honoring the Flying Tigers and Chennault starting in 2005 to mark the end of World War II in China, while the government in Taiwan presented a special award in memory of Chennault to his family. His childhood home in Commerce is now noted with a historical marker.

Learning to give our burdens to God I had lunch with a middle-aged couple the other day and they were sharing about a crisis situation they are struggling with.

The stress has Dr. Billy been building for Holland quite some time and the heavy burden of trying to deal with this is taking a toll.

They are both believers, but at the same time they admit there is much to learn when it comes to spiritual warfare and getting into position to listen and trust God with their life. You know, we all have a difficult time with these aspects of the Christian life, but admitting we are vulnerable and weak in our times of adversity is a positive step in the right direction.

Many times it’s our pride that leads us into even more difficulty when we become convinced we can handle our own problems.

When we approach our circumstances through our emotions, it usually does not end up well, but when we humbly follow God’s instructions we can trust that his wisdom knows exactly what to do. It’s true, the Lord can make all things work together for the good, but we must cooperate with his plans. II Corinthians 12:9-10 says, “And he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Most of us have heard the old saying, “Let go and let God” but this is not easy. There may be times when we need to take the bull by the horns, but surrendering is associated with trust and this is an area where we humans often hesitate. Remember when your dad would hold out his arms and tell you to jump? This is the same idea that we are trying to

learn about our spiritual relationship with God and if we cannot trust him, we cannot please him. Our nature has a stubborn and independent determination as we are not naturally wired to yield our control to anyone even God Himself. This is why the Bible speaks about our mind being renewed as learning to submit and obey is a learned behavior. This is especially the case when it comes to turning loose of our problems because we would much rather spend our time and energy trying to defeat them with worry and anxiety. The frustrating reality is that many of our misfortunes are simply too difficult for us to handle. We might as well face it, we cannot solve, repair, heal, restore, or resolve our serious obstacles, but God can. “But Jesus beheld them and said unto them, with men this is impossible: but with God all things are possible” Matthew 19:26. When we finally realize we are unable to fix what is broken, we then have the choice to give our problems over to God and believe that he will step into the need and create a miracle. This is great news!

Charles Swindoll is quoted as saying, “We must cease striving and trust God to provide what He thinks is best and in whatever time He chooses to make it available. But this kind of trusting doesn’t come naturally. It’s a spiritual crisis of the will in which we must choose to exercise faith.”

I realize it’s difficult to understand, but Jesus offers a very different perspective about suffering. While we are asking how God could possibly create anything good from our difficult situation, we usually forget that he knows everything and is waiting to use our circumstances to manifest his glory. Even though we may experience a thunderstorm occasionally, let us be reminded that eventually they stop and the sun comes out. Our life was not intended to be a continual valley of shadows or for us to carry our worries and heavy burdens. Matthew 11:28 declares, “Come unto me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Today as you continue to face your giant and it seems there is no hope for victory, consider transferring this burden over to Jesus and allow him the opportunity to intervene. Living with children Q: My 7-year-old son, an only child, is giving me fits. He’s overly active and will not cooperate in any instruction I give him. I spoke to his pediatrician about him and she is recommending ADHD medication. I don’t want to go in that direction; besides, he has no problems in school, and never has.

His teachers love him and are constantly telling me how smart and mature he is for his age. It’s like I’m dealing with a person with a split personality. If he’s not crazy, I’m slowly getting there. Can you give me some tips?

A: The completely unscientific nature of the ADHD diagnosis aside, your son is not a candidate for medications that have never reliably outperformed placebos in clinical trials. It never fails to infuriate me when I hear of pediatricians whose knee-jerk response to discipline problems is a prescription. Having said that, I understand completely the pressure they are under to do something “helpful” during a ten-to-fifteenminute office visit. There ought to be a parenting specialist in every pediatric office, someone who can take the time that the physician probably doesn’t have.

Your son doesn’t have a split personality either. He’s simply figured out that some adults have claimed their natural authority over children and others, including you, have not. Proper adult authority has a profound calming and focusing effect on children, an effect that no medication can match.

In your description of the problem, you used the word “cooperate.” My consistent finding is that parents who use that word actually want their children to obey, but instead of giving clear, authoritative instructions are instead making requests and suggestions, as in, “Would you please come to the

table so we can have dinner?” and “It would really help me out if you’d stop what you’re doing and feed the dog, okay?”

When it comes to the discipline of a child, consequences will be necessary at times, but the key is a proper presentation of oneself as an authority figure, and that is primarily a matter of how you speak. Using the above examples, the proper words are “It’s time for you to come to the table for dinner” and “You need to feed the dog now.” The fewer the number of words contained in an instruction, the more authoritative it sounds.

The reader might be amazed at the number of parents who’ve told me that simply learning how to properly give instructions and communicate decisions (in both cases, use the fewest words possible and answer “Why?” or “Why not?” with “Because I said so”) has completely turned their kids’ behavior around. I call it “Leadership Speech” or “Alpha Speech” because it communicates to the child in question that the adult is in charge, and a child’s natural reaction to the proper delivery of authority is obedience.

Now, you’ve obviously got some lost ground to make up for, but you can do this. Keep in mind that there’s nothing “wrong” with your son. If there was a BIG problem, his teachers would be begging you to medicate him.

In my next column, I’ll describe a rehabilitative method I call “Kicking the Child Out of the Garden of Eden.” You’re going to need to do something to get your son’s attention and convince him that life as he has known it with Momma is over. What I have in mind should turn the trick. Stay tuned!

The concert was intended to be a celebration of movie music.

Maiello led the audience in a game of “name that movie,” offering concert-goers the chance to yell out movie titles associated with just a few lines of music. “E.T.,” “Psycho,” and “Star Wars,” among many others, made the cut. “You’re such a wonderful audience,” Maiello kept saying, expressing surprise at the group’s movie recall.

As the program progressed, one could not help but be overcome with a sense of pure, unadulterated joy. Maiello was gregarious, engaging and charming throughout the night, leading the audience through a maze of poignant music and moving lyrics. Yet the power behind this journey could be found in something much larger. Music can oftentimes express what words are unable to adequately convey.

Such revelations can give birth to a sense of community, along with a connection to something much larger than oneself. The concert itself felt like not only a celebration of cinematic music; but, even more importantly, a celebration of America.

Watching as these talented musicians used wooden instruments to produce beautiful sounds, it was hard not to see the look of joy emanating from so many faces across the stage. The joy they exhibited was infectious, the dedication and skill exemplified by their performances rather inspiring.

Perhaps providing a cautionary tale to those audience members who happened to be students. Don’t just follow the money; after all, passion matters, too.
