School board candidates answer campaign questions

Easter is coming up and for the first time in several years, no Easter events will take place at Howe High School. The Methodist Church had been holding their egg hunt at the high school but will move back to their church campus. First Baptist Church of Howe will also move their Easter service back to the church house instead of at the high school.

In 1964, Howe recruited a 24-yearold coach that was at Mesquite High School to come in and bring stability to the athletic program. 50 years later, he's still a Howe Bulldog.

Norman Dickey was born and raised in Gunter, Texas and played football, basketball, and baseball for the Tigers in blue. While in high school, Dickey reached then end of competition on numerous occasions in multiple sports. Back then, there were no state championships for small schools. Masters' week

But in Howe, Masters week took on a whole new meaning. Bethany Masters drove home four district titles in the District Track Meet held in Van Alstyne. Masters won the long jump, triple jump, 300meter hurdles, and was part of the winning mile relay team.

Bulldogs lose two during the week

Lindsay got the win over Howe, 6-4 on Tuesday thank in part to a 2-run first inning. Parker Pecina started for Howe on the mound and allowed three earned runs in three innings. He walked three and struck out three. Lindsay pitching scattered five hits by Howe. But the Bulldogs took advantage of four walks and a timely error to come up with four runs. RBIs in the game for Howe came from Bryce Krantz, Jalen Thornton, and Nathan Duffee.

Howe also used pitchers Garret Johnson (2 innings), Lane Stracener (1 inning), Dyson Dillard (1 inning), Luis Chacon, and Mason Riggs.

Howe's JV tied Lindsay, 1-1 on Tuesday and beat Leonard, 6-2 on Friday.

Tuesday night's game was a pitching duel with Kolbe Lappin going three solid innings for Howe, allowing only one run on three hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Luke Lopez and Brett Burnett had the team's only two hits. Layton Elvington scored the lone run.

On Friday, Kolby Windon struck out 13 batters in six innings, allowing only one run and walking two. Parker Pecina and Ayden Norton had two RBIs each to lead the charge.

The Lady Bulldogs lost to Leonard On Friday, it was a 3-run first on Friday, 7-5 on the road. No inning by Leonard that put the other information was available. game squarely in their hands.

Howe's Dylan Hughs got the start and went 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs - allowing five hits, three walks, while striking out one. Arturo Lowder came in to finish the game with 2.1 innings allowing one earned run.

Howe again was limited to four hits in the game, however, Dillard, Garrett Grigg, and Riggs each had 3-baggers. Howe RBIs came by Krantz, Riggs, and Dillard.

School Board family we have lived in the school district since April 2001 (18 years).

Both of our daughters, Hunter and Harley have had the privilege of growing up and attending school in the Howe school district, and have benefited greatly from it!

Question: In what school or district activities have you been involved?

Shadden - Having three grandchildren in our school, I attend numerous school activities. I am currently on our District Improvement Committee. I support our Ag Boosters, help with PTO meals and have volunteered in elementary classrooms.

Doty - Howe Athletic Booster Club Treasurer, Howe Band Boosters, Howe PTA Treasurer, Volunteering time and services at the school including running concession stands, keeping stats, fixing meals for various student activities, and pulling band trailers among many others. I have also been involved in many other organizations in the Howe community. I have been on the boards of Howe Youth Softball, Howe Youth Basketball, and coached many teams in each of these organizations. In addition to this, I am currently serving as the Finance Chair at FUMC Howe.

Hayes - I have volunteered on a yearly basis in activities such as working with Coach Simmons with the elementary kids for their fitness test, Preparing for field day, and the actual field day event. I volunteer every year for fall festival activities and at times concession stand. I've also been head coach of one of the Howe baseball teams.

Leakey - Fall fest and other fundraisers, Fifth Quarter, coaching youth sports, great days of service, and church youth group.

Brockelman - While in the past my professional career kept me traveling much of the time when at home, I did have the privilege of providing support to our community's volunteer softball coaches, serving in concession stands and helping with set-up and clean-up at school and community events.

Question: How much time will you/can you give to board service?

Shadden - I will be able and willing to devote all the time necessary to be a competent Board Member.

Doty - There is not a specific amount of time that is required. I will put in the time necessary to understand the issues, concerns, and come prepared for all meetings.

I want to be informed and understand the pros and cons before I make decisions.

Hayes - This the theme of my board campaign. Since I am retired, I have unlimited time to devote to this position. Seven days a week 24/7. I want to be known as the most available board member ever to have served.

Leakey - As much as is needed to represent the public and the students effectively.

Brockelman - There is no question in my mind that there is a strong sense of Pride in the Howe school district. I believe this is an important strength, as I believe it leads to increased interaction, friendliness and a sense of wellbeing between people in the community. This is also strength in that it makes the community more attractive to potential residents and businesses.

I also believe that strong administrative support is a strength in our schools. My spouse is a teacher in the Howe district. I can say first hand that the level of administrative support she and other teachers receive is very important to them. This is important because dissatisfied teachers are a strong predictor of high turnover, and high turnover is most certainly to lead to low morale in the district. Because Howe ISD teachers are satisfied in their employment I believe that our children reap the benefits of strong commitment and quality education from teachers and staff.

An additional strength I believe Howe ISD possesses is a high level of parental involvement in their child’s education. In my opinion, the strength lies in the fact that student success, to some degree, is directly correlated to the level of involvement parents spend on their children’s education, both at home and through collaboration with teachers and staff. I believe high levels of parental involvement tend to manifest through increased learning and motivation, as well as better behavior.

Question: What are 2-3 needs that must be priorities for our district to address? Why do you see these as needs?

Shadden - Retain our highly qualified teachers and administrators, have our students prepared for the next step in their educational choices.

Continue to keep up to date technology, so our students can use technology efficiently.

Prepare for our continued growth, in student numbers, staff and new buildings.

Doty - The biggest challenge is managing the consequences of growth. As the number of students grows, so does the need for more capital expenditures such as land, buildings, and equipment.

Managing and prioritizing expenditures is paramount during growth periods. Growth also brings a more diverse population of students. We need to ensure that EVERY student receives a page 8

That 1966 season kicked off a string of six seasons without a losing record including the regional champions in 1970.

It was under Dickey that the Bulldog Booster Club was started under the guidance of President Freddy Holcomb in 1964.

Dickey named off every starter on that 1970 team while reminiscing about the team that reminded him of his playing days of having a great team, but not getting to advance to a state championship game. In Class B, as the Bulldogs were in 1970, the regional championship was as far as they could go. Even though they won-out during the playoffs, there is that sour unknown of 'what if?' that haunted Dickey as a player and now a coach.

During his early years of coaching football in Howe, Dickey became married to Joanne Burgland, who he had met while they both were attending Austin College. The two were married in May of 1965 and are looking forward to their 50th wedding anniversary next year.

Soon after the 1970 championship team, Howe was bumped up in classification to Class B to Class A and hard times once again set in with the program.

"When you jump in classification, it's tougher," said Dickey. "At the bottom, each team has a few good players, but the higher and higher you go, they have better and better good athletes that you have to compete with. So it hit us hard. I don't think I got any dumber.

Although some people questioned that."

From 1966 until having to move to Class A, Dickey's teams were 37- 23-2. After moving up, his teams went 12-26.

Dickey has been known to spend a lot of time working on this and that at Bulldog Stadium over the years. It's probably due to his early days of having to replace boards on the wooden bleachers each summer.

"The baseball field was in the northeast side of the field and we'd have to take the fence down from the home bleachers," Dickey said. "We also would get the county to come up there with a blade and would cut us out a four-lane track to run on. That was our track. It was a little different than it is now."

Learn about your antiques and collectibles with Georgia Caraway The previous two week’s columns were about business cards and calling cards. The other predecessor to the business card was the trade card.

Dr. Georgia Caraway Trade cards were miniature forms of advertising that were handed out by merchants to potential buyers as a way to direct folks to their shops and as store giveaways as a way to remind folks to come back. Trade cards also served as invoices, receipts, and places to jot down quotations, price lists, and other handwritten information. Early European trade cards were often reproductions of store signs.

Later the cards became more pictorial, with beautiful and rich descriptions of merchandise.

and realizing things weren't too promising, Dickey took a position as a counselor out of the Grayson County Superintendent's office. He spent two days in Howe, two days in Whitewright, and a day in Gunter each week. He says that the transition was a big one.

"I was in charge of testing with ACT and SAT. It was different, but if you've ever coached, you miss it," said Dickey.

Howe replaced Dickey with Blackie Wade, who never had a winning record in Howe, but is credited for being the one who introduced the victory light to Bulldog Stadium.

In football, Dickey taught his players to fill the gaps and that is exactly what he, himself did in his 31 years at Howe. While staying in the counselor role for many of those years, he was also an interim principal, an interim athletic director on four separate occasions and even served as interim superintendent in 1991 between the tenure of Pete Simmons and Dr. Wayne King.

"Dr. King asked me if I would come to Howe full-time as assistant superintendent," said Dickey.

"That's what I did the last eight years I was at Howe. But there for a while, I was in charge of everything. I had custodians, textbooks, bus drivers, bus routes, and evaluations of teachers. It was plenty busy."

Dickey said that the six months that he was interim superintendent was a period that he couldn't wait to be over.

Dickey, over the years, has worked approximately 450-500 track meets in various towns by firing the starting gun. He's also worked as a statistician on Friday nights on the sidelines for Fryar and McQueen from 1985-1992. After that, he ran the clock for twenty years working with his friend Leon Thornhill, who would serve as public address announcer.

In the first game of the new press box at Bulldog Stadium, Superintendent Kevin Wilson has asked Dickey and Thornhill to once again serve as clock operator and public address announcer to give a ribbon-cutting type of feel to the new facility.

It may have been 50 years ago this fall that Norman Dickey first came to Howe to coach, but he can still be seen in the halls as a substitute teacher.

I will be available 24/7 to the citizens of our district to discuss any and all concerns they may have with their student. My sole job is to serve. I want my accomplishments to be known as one in which I served and met the needs of all the people in our district.

Leakey - I would strive for administrative continuity, fiscal responsibility, and open communication with the public about decisions and needs within the district.

Brockelman - At the end of the day this is really all about the education and personal development of the kids. So the key accomplishment for me would be that our students are achieving at their highest levels.

My hope for them is that through the efforts of the board, our school administrators and our

teachers, that they would find an increased level of academic engagement and curiosity, and that it would drive them to new levels of personal achievement as they go to college or head into the workforce.

From an operational standpoint, I hope to see that all of us in the district work together to make the absolute best decisions possible as it relates to the growth of our district.

Additionally, I would expect to achieve and then exceed each of the goals that the board has committed to each year.

Texas History Minute He was one of the most famous gunmen of the Old West; but in the end, he was felled by a bacteria rather than gunfire. Certainly Dr. Ken Bridges as the 1870s and 1880s on the western frontier became years filled with unforgettable characters who became legends with tales of their exploits echoing across the wideopen plains and into the American imagination, only a handful of names stand out. Doc Holliday became one of the most famous of these figures, and his journey into legend began deep in the heart of Texas.

John Henry “Doc” Holliday was born in central Georgia in 1851.

His father was a veteran of the Mexican War and the Civil War. The future gunslinger and gambler became an expert shot while a youngster, not unusual for that time period. When he was a teenager, his mother and stepbrother both died from tuberculosis, a widespread and deadly lung infection that was often called the “white plague” that left thousands dead each year.

Holliday was an ambitious young man with a brilliant mind. He reportedly absorbed languages such as Greek, Latin, and French. In 1870, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery, the most prestigious dental school in the country at the time, though few such schools were to be had. In just over a year, at the age of 20, he completed his doctorate.

He soon established a dental practice in Georgia and was on his way to a quiet, respectable career when he also came down with tuberculosis. While the disease is curable today – and easily prevented with vaccinations -- it was a death sentence in the 1870s.

Little was known how tuberculosis spread and no treatments existed.

Patients could die in a matter of months or linger on for years or die from any accompanying infection.

The common belief at the time was that the warm, dry climates of the West could slow the deterioration of the lungs. So with little left to lose, Holliday moved to Texas.

He established a successful dental practice in downtown Dallas in 1873, initially working with a friend of his father’s. Within a few months, he set up his own practice at Main and Lamar Streets.

However, his coughing fits during examinations and news of his contagious illness frightened away many patients. He could keep his diagnosis a secret no longer. As a result, the gambling he once enjoyed for recreation and the occasional thrill became an important source of income.

1874 for illegal gambling. The situation grew even worse in 1875 when he got into a shootout with a Dallas bartender. While he was acquitted in the incident, Holliday realized his days in Dallas were numbered.

Shortly afterward, he left Dallas and headed north to Denison. He attempted to restart his dental career in the small community, but his increasing complications from tuberculosis and his spreading reputation from Dallas made it difficult to stay in business. Within a few months after his 1875 arrival, he left for Fort Griffin, northeast of modernday Abilene. His Grayson County office was the last known time he had a regular dental practice.

At Fort Griffin, Holliday began gambling full time and moving from place to place and picking up odd jobs in a curious assortment of adventures. For a time, he worked as a card dealer in Colorado. Periodically, he ran afoul of the law in some cities and quickly had to make his departure. On a trip back to Fort Griffin, he met Wyatt Earp, who was then working as a Deputy U. S. Marshal in pursuit of a suspected train robber.

The two became close friends and that loyalty itself became a legend. Holliday saved Earp’s life on several occasions and fought alongside him and his brothers, Morgan and Virgil, at the notorious shoot-out at the O. K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, in 1881.

Holliday found himself in several gunfights over the years but survived them all. He was never injured in any of the confrontations. But his time ran out. His disease caught up to him, and he checked himself into a tuberculosis sanatorium in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He succumbed to his lingering illness in 1887 at the age of 36.

Holliday’s fame rose in the years after his death as tales of his exploits and the famed gunfight at the O. K. Corral spread and eventually found their way into the movies. While many variations on the story have appeared, from such actors as Victor Mature, Kirk Douglas, and Dennis Quaid, many depictions gained acclaim for the portrayal of the legendary figure who was as quick with a one-liner as he was with his guns. Val Kilmer’s performance as an unflappable and quick-witted Holliday in Tombstone (1993) has by itself won a legion of fans.

Arrested more than a dozen times and responsible for shooting an untold number of men, Holliday was never convicted of a crime.

There are situations when we feel that individuals need sound advice and this might be true, but it’s also common to forget that everyone has a right to think and live however they want.

Christians do not intend to be insulting, but sometimes their message can be offensive and in rare cases some end up living in isolation because everyone intentionally avoids them. It’s true, serious Christians have a burden and really care about others, but sometimes they take matters into their own hands and do not wait for God to guide them. It becomes even worse when concern turns to condemnation or even hatred for what someone else believes, which no matter how civil and courteous it might appear, no one can walk in the peace of God and embrace unforgiveness at the same time. Since the beginning of history, humans have drawn religious and political lines in the sand and dared the other side to cross over as strife and judgment is embedded within our nature.

Unfortunately, being divided is so common that we would not comprehend how to act any other way. Jesus talks about how we should display spiritual love instead of being led by our emotions, but sadly, instead of accepting his guidelines for charitable living, many who boldly call themselves his disciples believe it’s their responsibility to fight against anyone whose theological, social, or political views are contrary to their own.

You and I are never going to save anyone because only God can do that. We can instruct those who want to learn and demonstrate what we believe, but that is about

the extent of it. For those who are convinced they know everything, it’s nearly impossible to gain their respect. In the rare situation that anyone has ever listened to you and followed your suggestions, you should consider it a miracle. Even counselors that are paid handsomely from those who are seeking advice will confess it’s sporadic that anyone follows what they suggest. This reveals why Jesus has such a small following as the scripture relays that, “narrow is the way to eternal life and few there be that will find it.”

Speaking of choices, the Bible is filled with stories and insights that illustrates the beauty of obedience and the negative consequences of rebellion. We are reminded of the simple illustration of a child who behaves badly and is disciplined while another follows instructions and is rewarded. The concept of good and evil is associated with an obedient person who follows God’s divine order even if it means personal sacrifice while the disobedient individual who lives independently is content to trust their emotions and base every decision on what they want to do.

So, what have we as Christians been called to do and how can we help a world of people who could care less about God? Well, you can search for yourself, but I’m convinced the meaning of life is to yield our will to God. With many years of thought behind this answer I have not found anything more important than to know, love, and obey the Lord.

Matthew 22:36-38 says, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law? Jesus replied, love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” The Bible advises everyone to seek out their own salvation with fear and trembling because the decisions we make today will have a direct impact on our next life. This is a reality we can choose to explore or we can continue ignoring and hoping for the best which by the way, is the foundation of freewill. For the Christian, freewill includes how intimate we want to be to God, however, accepting the responsibility of being a representative for his kingdom does not allow

compromising our faith or playing both sides of the fence. Yes, it’s difficult to live in a state of spiritual sensitivity, but if we desire to be pleasing to the Lord, it will always be in direct

cooperation with the Holy Spirit.

After all is said and done, our spiritual success will be determined by our love and devotion to God.

As of April 2, however, Ms. Jargon is John Rosemond writing a WSJ column titled “Family and Tech,” described as dealing with “the impact of technology on family life.”

In her inaugural column (April 2, 2019), which could have been written by public relations folks at Sony and the American Psychological Association, Ms. Jargon strives to convince her audience that simply because a child has difficulty putting down the game controller and finding creative, productive things to do does not mean he’s a videogame addict.

Given that addiction is defined as being obsessed with and having great difficulty ceasing the use of a harmful substance or involvement in a non-productive or pathological activity, I fail to see anything but contradiction in Ms. Jargon’s thesis. We’re talking about kids who will not stop playing videogames unless a parent or the imminence of a bodily function forces them to stop. How’s that not an addiction?

The manager of a large west coast convention hotel once told me that when his property hosted a “gamers” convention, his staff had to threaten attendees with pulling the plug on their devices to get them to drink water or eat even a cracker. Many of the attendees wore adult diapers so they wouldn’t have to stop playing. That, by any other name, is addiction. It’s also sick. It’s also where a child or teen’s obsession with videogames may lead if parents don’t pull the plug before some hotel manager has no choice - that or risk a lawsuit from a gamer who becomes dehydrated and suffers a cardiac episode.

Ms. Jargon seems loathe to call a spade a spade. After relating two horror stories that clearly describe addiction, she refers to psychologists who advise parents to stop worrying about whether their kids are addicted and figure out instead if they’re using videogames to cope with depression, anxiety or stress. She cites a study finding that teens who played videogames four or more hours a day on average showed more signs of depression than kids who played less than four

hours a day.

Note that the psychologists in question (unidentified) posit that depression and other mental health issues cause obsession with/addiction to videogames as opposed to the other way around.

That’s a clever means of covering ineptitude while at the same time claiming rights to treatment (keep in mind, dear reader, I am a psychologist). Besides, it’s so much easier to tell parents their child needs a daily dose of a drug than it is to get them to do something that will cause their child to hate them and act deranged until cured, not to mention something that may cause them to never make another appointment.

I once persuaded parents to “disappear” their 15-year-old son’s console while he was at school. He was so “into” videogames he would not come down to dinner or participate in any family activity and was usually up well past midnight every night. When he discovered that his supply of videopioid had been terminated, he went nuts. He all-but destroyed his room, for example. Two weeks of silence and self-imposed seclusion later, he admitted to his parents that he felt much, much better and was going to try and help other boysconquer their addictions.

To prevent an addiction from developing, Ms. Jargon passes along such hackneyed tips as creating rules around playing and following them consistently. Okay, but that assumes parents who have no difficulty establishing limits that cause their kids distress. The problem is that all too many of today’s parents have an abundance of said difficulty, meaning Jargon’s advice is moot out of the gate.

Thankfully, there are still parents who will stand up to child-rearing challenges and face them head-on; parents who are not trying to be their kids’ friends; parents who understand that children, including most teens, know only what they want, which is precisely why they require adults in their lives who know what they need.

Norman Dickey, 1940-2019 NORMAN EDWARD DICKEY was born Jan 24, 1940 in Gunter, Texas in a small home on his grandfather Reed’s land. His parents were James E Dickey and Alla Jean Reed Dickey. He was raised in Gunter in a simple manner that instilled and incorporated his love of God, life, family, and sports. After working on the farm, milking the cow, hauling hay, and picking cotton, Norman chose to go to college to be able to always be near his love of sports by becoming a coach.

After a successful athletic career at GHS, he graduated in 1958 and went to Cisco Jr. College on a football scholarship. After playing college football for 2 years, he transferred to and worked his way through Austin College and played football and baseball on scholarship there for 2 more years.

He graduated from Austin College in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education. His first teaching and coaching job was in Mesquite High School, Mesquite, Texas. Howe ISD school board sought him out for head coach and athletic director in 1964 and so he started his 31-year stint at HHS. There he became the “winningest coach in HISD history” and was recently recognized at a community pep rally for that honor.

Texoma Patriots meeting tonight The Texoma Patriots will meet tonight at Buck Snort BBQ in Downtown Van Alstyne at 7 pm.

The speaker is Audrey Werner who will talk about "Getting to the Root of the Problem."

Werner is a speaker, author, professor, and mom. She asks the question: How did America go from chastity to condoms, from purity to AIDS, and from the “absolute” standard to a “no limits” standard in just two generations. Audrey will share the history and intent behind the sexual revolution and, more importantly, how she believes God can use His people to help restore protections for marriage, women, and children in America.

As one ordinary person, Werner began her quest for Truth. Within her book 10 Tips on How NOT to Talk to Your Kids About Sex, she exposes the darkness presented through Dr. Alfred Kinsey’s fraudulent science that has found its way into Christian sex education materials. Then she inspires you as a parent and educator to return to sharing with children about God’s life process
