Four named to 2019 Howe Hall of Honor

Watch yourself if you're enjoying a tasty burger at Quick Check. Rumor has it a firearm was accidentally discharged in the eating section where the old men drink coffee. This time instead of shooting their mouths about the city streets, a shot was accidentally fired through the wall. Our initial informant, a lady in town, said we would be called out as cowardly if we didn't mention anything about it in this week's edition. Well, young lady, here's your audacious paragraph. Howe's That? There's been a lot of proud moments recently about that old ballpark on Hughes Street getting a face-lift. But we have to mention that the playing field itself has looked outstanding many times over the years. There are hundreds of dads that have contributed to making the field playable and enjoyable to the kids of Howe. Those recently that I've witnessed are Kent Akins, Brice Harvey, Adam Riggs, Stephen Braswell, Scott Thurman, Mike Portman, Mike Stephens, Billie Ingram, John Grant, and a ton more that we hate to leave out. Hats off to all of you that have helped over the years and didn't get your name in the paper.

The voting is over and four members will be inducted in May to the Howe Hall of Honor. The chamber each year takes two living and two deceased members from a process of nomination and then voting. Donna Jarma and Bobby Sollis were voted into this year's class as well as Lowell Thompson and Marion Allison. page 2

Spring has sprung an old ballpark back to life The City of Howe and the Howe Youth Baseball organization invested $22,000 into a 48-year-old ballpark this season. The property that is now Ferguson Field was once home to Ferguson Seed Farms and was donated to the city long ago with the deed restrictions that it must be a park and must be named Ferguson. In 1971, then-Howe Baseball Commissioner Ray Bledsoe helped turn the property into what now is a staple in Howe, Texas. Jayden Rangel bats in the season opener at Ferguson Field for his Howe 6U team. The new backstop has a concrete knee wall and a modern pole and netting screen.

Howe Youth Baseball raised over $10,000 by selling advertising sponsorships and t-shirts. Those that stepped up to help were Baker A/C & Heating, Attorney Micah Belden, Woodmen Life, Garrett Funlenchek, Bob Utter Ford, the Howe Enterprise, RG Services, North Texas Waste Collection, David Englutt, Key to Sweetness, Campat Machine Tool, Inc., Robertson Welding Service, The HHS Class of 1971, Tyson Foods, HGP Trucking, Torque Plumbing, and Victory Light Photography. The fundraising efforts from the youth baseball organization led to the upgrading of the exterior to the concession stand with a 4-foot high stone wainscot and metal fascia above. A green mesh netting was purchased to wrap the outfield fence and yellow poly-cap was ordered to wrap the top of the fence to give it the "baseball look." There's more to do, but for the little kids of Howe, the ol' ball yard has gone from one of the worst in the league to one of the best. Investing in our youth is always a good idea.
