New Bulldogs baseball coach seeks stable program with stable of arms

The Howe Bulldogs baseball seniors have perhaps felt a little snakebit throughout their high school careers The program has now seen five different head coaches since the beginning of their freshman year But Howe's newest baseball skipper Ryan Moreau says his plan is to be here for the long haul and provide stability for the baseball program in 2019 and for years to come

"I addressed that with the seniors in the beginning and I told them it's hard to have a new coach every year," said Moreau "Sometimes it's hard to buy into the new guy when it's happened every year So I told them if they want to be the group that can say 'we started this' ten years down the road when Howe's known as always having a good competitive team and always making a run at the playoffs, they're going to have to buy into me "
Moreau says that he expressed his desires to the team that in five-to-10 years he wants people to think of Howe as one of the premier baseball schools in the area
Moreau comes from Class 2A Meridian where he was the baseball coach there for the last four years
"I saw the job opening last year and I thought about applying and I talked to my wife about it, but it didn't seem the right time for us to leave Meridian yet," said Moreau "This past year I had been applying and I actually had just got back from an interview and I saw the job board where Howe was open I told my wife and she said to apply for it so I did "

Moreau says that his style of baseball is to give the kids freedom within structure within the game
"The game dictates whether we play for one run in an inning or to play for multiple runs," said Moreau "Our goal is to get a runner on third with less than two outs If you do that, you score 70 percent of the time Sometimes you need to bunt, sometimes you need to swing it I let the game dictate that "

Winning baseball teams tend to go as far as their pitching will take them and Howe has a deep stable of hurlers Senior Mason Riggs leads the staff followed by Garrett Grigg, Arturo Lowder, Garret Johnson, Dylan Hughs, Parker Blount, Kyler Anderson, Dyson Dillard, and Bryce Krantz
"This is the first place I've been with this many arms," said Moreau
Moreau says that his starters are Dillard at catcher, Johnson at first, Spencer Akins at second, Krantz at shortstop, and Hughes at third In the outfield, Anderson is in left, Jalen Thornton in center (with Riggs also playing center), and Joseph Brennan in right
The Bulldogs have started the season 0-7, but six fo the seven games have been against much larger schools Riggs went four innings in the 5-3 loss to Melissa where he struck out four but walked six leading to two earned runs. Lowder came in and pitched two scoreless innings needing only 24 pitches to do so
The offense sputtered against Melissa by collecting six singles and scoring their runs on a double-play ball and an error by Melissa
Riggs was a bit more crisp against Aubrey on Feb 18 when he went three innings in the season opener, striking out four and allowing no walks He did allow five hits but ended his turn
Continued from page 8 with no earned runs scored. Grigg pitched the final three innings giving up two earned runs on three hits, striking out four and giving no freebees
Howe's sticks were hot with 12 total hits including multi-hit games from Krantz, Riggs, Hughs, and Brennan Johnson and Hughs had the RBIs as Howe's third run was unearned. What excites Moreau about Howe is that the kids here don't think of baseball as an off-season spring sport
The Dogs played in a tournament this weekend and were defeated by Prosper JV 11-0 and 8-0 They lost to Pilot Point7-3 and to Melissa 8-5 Both Grigg and Lowder each pitched well against Pilot Point giving up a combined four earned runs on eight hits Blount drove in two runs in the loss
During the tournament, Howe used a plethora of pitchers including Dillard, Hughs, Lowder, Parker Pecina, Anderson, Grigg, and Thornton
Howe's JV has started the season 1-3 with losses to Melissa, Callisburg, and Bland The win came in a 12-3 drubbing of Avery over the weekend where Layton Elvington pitched three strong innings Elvington, Caden Turner, Ayden Norton, and Pecina each had two hits in the win
"We have kids that actually play and care about the game," said Moreau
The new head coach says that he loves that the kids love baseball, but is not an advocate of players choosing just baseball and playing year-round
"It's especially detrimental to the junior high kids because you're only training one skill set," said Moreau "The biggest thing that most baseball-only kids face is that they are too weak. They're never in the weight room and college coaches say their biggest complaint about baseball-only kids is that they are weak "
The Bulldogs plan for this season is to be strong with a stable of arms Stable may just be the word for 2019
