Founded in Wichita County in 1907, Electra Texas, was named after the daughter of cattle baron

WT Waggoner

The rancher, whose property surrounded most of the town, had complained about finding oil when is The d f ra oil 7/1911 any e heir geologists, as well as those from other companies, mapped a long east-west running structural arch, the “Electra Arch,” one of several geologic structures in the area

After the oil discovery the population grew from 1,000 to 5,000 within months of the discovery But the chaos often associated with oil booms was kept to a minimum – because much of the surrounding land had been leased Many who rushed to Electra seeking quick profits, just as quickly departed However, as seen in other boom towns with the wealth that comes with an oil boom also comes the potential growth of gambling and prostitution and public drunkenness, the influx of grifters, an increase in murderous crimes, environmental pollution and contamination of the land, and disasters of oil gusher fires and oil tank fires The P F Company’s 55,000 oil tank was struck by lightning in August 192 in Electra and was followed by other oil field related fires and disasters

This real photograph of a Texas Company (Texaco) oil tank fire that occurred on May 2, 1914 was taken by Benjamin Harrison Loden (1871? - 1926) Loden was the founder and owner of Loden's Studio in the North Texas town of Electra (Wichita County) Texas His work appears to be limited to scenes from the town and the Electra oil field (discovered in 1911) His photographs which were often made and sold as postcards include oilfield fires, derricks, gushers, and a missionary group ready to venture into the oilfield Loden photographs of these oil field disasters in and around Electra are sought after by oil field-related collectors The Electra News obituary of Loden read in part that B H Loden was a “pioneer photographer” and “the proprietor of the only studio in the city”

Electra celebrated the centennial of its historic oil discovery with a festival in 2011 The Texas legislature proclaimed the community “Pump Jack Capital of Texas” (there are 5,000 pump jacks in a 10-mile radius) Each year the town celebrates the Pump Jack Festival
