Two HHS band members City doubles minimum home size for new construction qualify for all-state

We celebrate today Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and each year I make it a habit to listen to his two most famed speeches. I have to admit that the climax of those speeches literally give me goose bumps.

The Mountaintop speech - "Like anybody, I would like to live a long life.

Two Howe "Pride of Howe" band members were recently selected to the ATSSB All-State band team. Jordan Griffin, who was also selected a year ago, qualified again for the honor for the altosaxophone category, while fellow senior Kelsey Pierce was selected as clarinet.

The Lady Bulldogs responded with Anderson's big night and an offensive reemergence of Jenna Honore, who has been dealing with an injured right wrist for the majority of the season. Honore gets to the foul line where she is dangerous as seen Tuesday when she shot 4for-5. While the Lady Tigers tried to limit Howe's post presence, Ally Harvey racked up 14 points.

Howe got off to a hot start with a 17-6 lead after the first and took a 30-20 lead into the dressing room at the half. Howe also won the third period, 18-12 and the fourth 12-8 en route to the win.

Behind Anderson's 19, Harvey's 14, and Honore's 10 were Calley Vick (8), Copeland (4), Molly Wilson (2), Katie Grogan (2), and Gianna Henry (1).

On Friday night, it was back to the inside dominance game of Harvey and Copeland. Howe didn't get off to quite the hot start that they've enjoyed recently but did finish the first period with a 16-13 lead. The Lady Bulldogs completely owned the secondperiod thanks to a 27-5. With 1:48 left in the second period, freshman Trinity Williams made her presence known as she immediately hit a 15-footer from the left wing for her first varsity points. With the Howe crowd and the Howe bench overwhelmingly approving of the freshman's debut, she responded only fourteen seconds later with a 3-pointer and Howe led at the half, 43-18.

In the third period with 4:45 remaining, Vick made a slick pass to Anderson who drained a runner to give Howe a 28 point lead with Harvey scoring seconds later to up the lead to 30 forcing a timeout by Blue Ridge.

Copeland was once again dominant by scoring 22 points and ripping down nine rebounds. Harvey clocked in at 14 points and Honore was perfect from the foul line as she tallied 10. Other scorers were Anderson (9), Vick (7), Williams (5), and Henry (3).

Howe's state ranking in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) was 18th in Class 3A. This week's new ranking will be announced sometime today.

The Lady Bulldogs will play at Bells on Tuesday and at home against rival Van Alstyne on Friday night.

In looking forward to the playoffs, District 10, which Howe is in, will play District 9. If Howe wins the district title, they would play the fourth seed from District 9 which could be S&S, Gunter, or Callisburg.

District 9 leaders are Pottsboro and Ponder.

Bulldogs continue tough stretch

The Howe Bulldogs continue to reel with two more losses last week.

Head Coach Eric Johns has made the best with what he's had on the floor each game. At times, due to disciplinary reasons, he's had his hands tied, but sports is more about wins and losses on the court or on the field.

Bulldogs defense stiffened up in the second period only allowing nine points to the Tigers. However, the Dogs struggled to put the ball in the basket and scored only eight points of their own to trail at the half, 33-17.

Elijah Campbell led Howe with 18 points with Caiden Harmon behind him at 10. Other scorers were Devin Porter (9), Noah Campbell (5), Layton Elvington (4), Logan Elvington (2), Jarron Ing (2), Ayden Norton (2), and Colton Thurman (2).

Harmon led Howe with 16 points followed by Noah Campbell (13), Elijah Campbell (12), Porter (10), and Steven Waldrip (2).

Kloey Scott does, and spelling that word earned her the title of Howe Middle School Spelling Bee Champion for the second year in a row. Scott battled 21 other students to claim her title by spelling words such as guise, diabolical, indelible, acclamations, and glutinous before being given the winning word. Her confidence never wavered, and her work ethic in studying for the bee certainly paid off.

Scott will represent Howe Middle School at the highly competitive Grayson County Spelling Bee to Peter 2:23-25 - and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; be held on February 5 at Grayson while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself County College. Back in early October the Howe Athletic Booster Club, Howe High School, and Bob Utter Ford partnered for a program entitled "Drive 4 Ur School." The result was a check in the amount of $4,450 to be split between the boosters and the activity fund at Howe High School.

Learn about your antiques and collectibles with Georgia Caraway “Hold-to-light” postcards work just like they sound – hold them up to a strong light and you will have a sight to behold.

One type of Dr. Georgia hold-to-light Caraway postcard comes die-cut, which has several layers, including a colored layer that the light shines through.

The transparent postcards have an extra element of surprise to them. One image is visible when viewed normally, then another appears when the card is held to the light. This leads to many surprising postcard discoveries!

Some transition from day to night images, some change color, and some change their image altogether.

Joseph Koehler of New York City printed many hold-to-light postcards in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with scenes of Chicago with light up windows, street lights and more.

Koehler first published a set of these at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

Many hold-to-light postcards are quite rare, and their prices can run anywhere from $10 to $500 and even more. The diecuts usually cost the most.

You won’t find anything like these postcards being made today, so finding one in a vintage collection is a special find.

This hold-to-light postcard depicts a man in his robe, slippers, and night cap stealing a kiss from the maid who is holding a wooden spoon. When you hold it to the light, you see the shadow of his old “battleax” wife dressed in black peering over his shoulder with a snarling look on her face. He is in deep trouble!

“This stolen kiss will cost you dear; It’s bound to start domestic strife.

For ere that kiss is yours, I fear You’ll have to reckon with your wife.”

This colorful undivided back postcard is postmarked October 7, 1907, Madisonburg, PA. It has a one-cent Benjamin Franklin cancelled stamp. It was sent To Miss Margaret Jacobs, Centre Hall, PA. The sender wrote his initials J?B in pencil on the front under the poem.

I put this on eBay to see if there was any interest, if not, the straying husband and his wife will be coming to Howe Mercantile for a visit.

Tidwell and City Engineer Bob Helmberger to review and update the standards. The results from that meeting led to a Monday night Planning & Zoning Commission meeting for approval of the new ordinances and from that point approval in the city council meeting.

"This is a large ordinance," Mayor Jeff Stanley told the audience Tuesday night at the city council meeting. "Some of these were very small changes, but some changes created a lot of problems and it could have taken a long time to make these changes. But I put a time limit on this of a month and these guys (Caldwell and Helmberger) did a great job of getting this done for us."

Tidwell gave an overview also to the audience and described the changes in the sizes of the minimum dwellings and changes to lot sizes.

In SF-E and SF-1 (residential homes), the minimum was raised from 900 sq ft to 1,800. In SF-2, it was raised from 900 sq ft to 1,400.

TF (duplexes) were raised from 700 sq ft on each side to 950. MF (apartments) were raised from 300 sq ft per bedroom to 450 per bedroom. The lot area for SF-1 was raised from 7,700 sq ft to 7,800 and SF-2 was raised from 6,000 sq ft to 7,000. The largest change was lot size requirements for TF which was raised from 3,500 sq ft to 10,000.

Keep Howe Beautiful elects new officers for 2019

Keep Howe Beautiful held their initial board meeting of 2019 on Monday night. The group elected officers for the new year and Donna Wormsbaker was once again elected as president for another term. Becky Hogenson returns as executive director and Starr Stanley returns as treasurer.

Incoming board members are Sheri Folkes as secretary and Mason Bearden - vice president. Bearden, a student at Howe High School has shown great leadership by

volunteering time for the community.

The non-profit organization increased the annual membership dues from $10 to $15 for individuals and from $15 to $30 for business members.

They also decided to write a recurring article to be published in the Howe Enterprise and the Van Alstyne Leader about their organization.

"I believe the Howe community loves helping the Howe kids and I think that's what this was all about," said Duncan.

King says that history would indicate that the next event should bring in around $8,000 to the ISD as most other schools have doubled their totals on their second fundraiser.

Pierce says her goal after college is to teach music education or even music therapy.

"I want to teach or help people through music," said Pierce.

The two seniors said that being in band is like another family.

"Being able to take as many trips you can with your band family and getting to share those experiences and wins is important," said Griffin.

Pierce says that her very best friends are in band and that her best friends for life are in this program.

"We have an infinite amount of pride and whatever we do, we do it with pride," said Pierce.

Texas History Minute With the end of World War I two months prior, January 1919 became a critical time to solidify peace. President Woodrow Wilson Dr. Ken had been working Bridges to end war in Europe since 1914 and redoubled his efforts after America entered the war in 1917 in response to German provocations.

What if it is true?

Life is filled with thoughts and ideas.

Many spend their time trying to keep busy because they do not want to think about what God expects from them. The strategy Dr. Billy is to live in a state Holland of distraction so their conscience will never have the occasion to pause and ponder about the true meaning of life. Everyone is unique and that's what makes life interesting but I was thinking the other day about how many are always on the go and never sit still for a moment unless they are forced to stop. Somewhere down the line, there will come a time when we will not be able to run or hide behind a distraction. On the other hand, there is another group that enjoys the quiet and peace of God's presence and sincerely desires to listen and obey his voice simply because they love him.

Whichever group you belong to it can be said that we only have one life and one chance to get it right, so whether we choose to live in denial or embrace our spiritual reality, one day truth will be revealed.

Is paying estimated taxes generally beneficial if you’re self employed?

Hey Taylor - After another year of scrambling to pay taxes and wondering if I could have paid less, I’ve started looking at estimated taxes. Do you know, generally Taylor Kovar speaking, if this is a beneficial option for people who are self-employed?

- Kelly Hey Kelly - Depending on your situation, paying estimated taxes leading up to the filing year can be really helpful. The only real downside is that some people think paying in advance offers some kind of loophole, which isn’t the way it works. If tax season gets you down, here are three ways estimated tax payments could lower your stress.

1. Pay in smaller allotments. We all like paying less whenever possible, and while you won’t reduce your overall tax bill, breaking $20,000 into four payments of $5,000 can feel a lot more manageable. Most people who need to pay quarterly work for themselves and selfemployment often has busy and slow seasons. If you break what you owe into installments, you get to choose when and how much you pay. This lets you get a little more predictive and, as long as you calculate responsibly, make larger payments when you have more cash flow available.

Living with children One of the more difficult facts for today’s parents, as a rule, to wrap their heads around is the - I’ll say it again, with emphasis- FACT that children do not need (as a general rule) John Rosemond a lot of attention.

I was there, working as a journeyman psychologist in a community mental health center, when the children-need-lots-ofattention myth had its genesis. The professional consensus at the time (early 1970s) was that any persistent inappropriate behavior was a “cry for attention.” Said another way, the parents of the child in question were depriving him of feeling that the universe had been eagerly anticipating his arrival ever since the Big Bang. The parents in question were irresponsible, neglectful; at best, lazy.

This myth lives on in the form of mommy-guilt. An all-too-typical mom recently told me that if she even sits down for a moment during the day to catch her breath, she almost immediately begins to feel that she’s being selfish, that she should be doing something (anything will do) for her kids – yet another example of how bad parenting advice from mental health professionals has greatly increased the perceived need for mental health professional advice.

Because of what I said in the preceding paragraph, children need unequivocal authority as much as they need unconditional love. The Beatles were wrong: love is not enough.
