Hudman officially returns as Howe Police Chief

their worst enemy by committing numerous penalties of the 5-yard, 10-yard, and 15-yard varieties. The Bulldogs, for most of the night, would take one step forward and two steps back. The good news is that the Howe offense was located on US Highway 69 at 7:30 pm.

Howe accumulated 267 total yards, of which 260 was on the ground.

Mason Riggs came into the game with 17 carries on the season for 96 yards. Friday night, he totaled 16 carries for 108 yards to lead Howe's offense. A 36-yard run in the second quarter became an instant teaching tool on how to keep your legs churning with two defenders on your back. However, as was the theme on Friday, an unsportsmanlike penalty negated the better portion of Riggs' run. The Bulldogs who racked up more flags than points also lost their starting quarterback Layton Elvington, who was ejected in the second quarter.

That led to backup quarterback Bryce Krantz entering the game as the full-time signal caller with a somewhat different cadence which messed with the center and offensive line's timing resulting in numerous false starts. With all of that said, the Bulldogs still had a shot to tie the game on their final possession but came up just short with a last-ditch heave by Krantz on fourth and short.

Howe's first possession was a successful one in regards to amount of plays and yards, but the Dogs were turned away on a fourth down

attempt at the Lone Oak 27 yard line. The Buffaloes had a near replica of Howe's first drive which was stalled at the Howe 9. The game was filled with punts, flags, and turnover on downs until Lone Oak quarterback Quaid Williams dropped a snap at the Howe 35 yard line. Howe's Devin Porter picked up the fumble and ran it to the south end zone for the game's first points with 7:27 remaining in the second quarter.

Howe's 6-0 advantage only lasted 1:09 as Lone Oak running back scored from 25 yards out to finish a 2-play, 68-yard drive. The 2-point conversion failed and the game was tied at six with 6:18 in the second. page 5 Rushing Riggs Harmon Akins Brennan

City and school enter into agreement for water line for new school At Monday's school board meeting, Superintendent Kevin Wilson told the board that he's been working for several weeks on getting an agreement for a water line for the new primary school located at 701 Summit Hill Pkwy.

The City of Howe has agreed to design and construct the project with Howe ISD paying for the project cost. The city will install a fully operational 12-inch water main (or larger).

An escrow account is being set up by the Howe ISD which will see a deposit of $600,000 for the project.

The city has agreed to acquire all easements and other real property interest acquired for public rightof-ways for construction of the water line up to a certain amount.

A cap is in place where the city will not be responsible for cost over $300,000. The estimates from the school engineer for the water construction were projected between $300,000 and $350,000.

Anna Anderson of Independent Bank in Howe has agreed to act as the agent for disbursements of the deposits. When both the city and school agrees that the project has been completed, the funds will be

released by Anderson.

"The city will pay 50 percent of the cost, therefore, if it cost under $600,000, the school would get any amount under that back," said Wilson to the board on Monday night. "And then the city will begin paying us in 10 equal payments no later than Sept. 20, 2020. They have up until one year after the completion of the project to make their first payment. Whatever the amount is that they owe, they'll make 10 equal payments which we anticipate to be $20-$30,000."

The school is still working on an easement from Cothran Malibu LP but have reached a stalemate. The school made an agreement with the city that if that is not resolved by Nov. 1, then the process will begin with eminent domain.

"We had to assure the city that we would follow through with that," said Wilson.

The school board approved the inter-local agreement with the City of Howe at 7:18 pm Monday night while a few minutes earlier, the Howe Planning & Zoning approved the plat for the agreement. On Tuesday night, the Howe City Council also approved the agreement after several public hearings.

For four years, the department under Hudman has been not only steady but envied by other local small town police departments.

Hudman, a US Marine Corps veteran, is no stranger to packing throughout his life. He was born in McKinney but bounced around much of his youth. Post military, he served as a reserve officer in North Carolina in 1985. Upon returning to North Texas, he worked as an officer in Bonham before landing in Sherman, where

he spent the next 24 years of his career and eventually retired in 2011. He says he was too young to retire and became interested in the open chief’s desk in Tioga and applied, never really expecting to get the job. When the chief position became available in early 2013, he was enticed to land here.

The plan was not to leave Tioga but Hudman was familiar with Howe due to the fact that his children attended school at Howe ISD. Hudman started last week and will be presumably seeking additional officers for the department which have been depleted by recent resignations.

Howe once again had a healthy drive, but turned the ball over on downs after losing their starting quarterback. The 7-play drive ended on a turnover on downs.

Lone Oak fared no better by ending the half after five plays.

Howe's defense once again was the bright spot for the Dogs as Defensive Coordinator Mike Segleski was rewarded with outstanding effort, especially from sophomores Jackson Adkins and Jordan Jones.

Trying desperately to hang on to playoff hopes, the Dogs scratched their way to a 14-play drive that took nearly seven minutes off the clock and traveled 42 yards but was turned away at the Lone Oak 13 yard line on a crucial fourth down. Two huge penalties assuredly kept Howe from points on the possession.

The Dog defense kept battling and forced a punt which gave the offense another chance for life.

The Howe 5th and 6th grade Bulldogs were eliminated by Tom Bean in the playoffs on Saturday in Blue Ridge, 27-6. Howe finished the season with a 7-2 season scoring 203 points and

allowing 60. Their only two losses on the year came at the hands of Tom Bean.

Coaches were Mike Stephens, Jason Lankford, and Terry Ulmer.

What will Hurricane Creek Country Club look like after 100 years?

The gorgeous clubhouse at Hurricance Creek Country Club.

Hurricane Creek Country Club has been known as the local hidden gem. The club is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year with big tournaments and big parties.

We've seen the renovations and upgrades over the last 50 years so we wondered what Hurricane Creek Country Club might look like 50 years from now. We asked the question to Board of Directors President Lance Lair and it hit him with a smile and a chuckle.

"I probably won't be here," said Lair. "I think you're probably going to see a golf course that

probably has 27 to 36 holes.

You're going to see an area around the golf course developed out.

And Hurricane Creek is going to be sitting in the middle of a thriving city with commercial, retail, and residential activity around it. It won't be the hidden gem in 2068 that we like to boast that it is now."

Over the years, the club has transformed from most of the members coming from South Collin County and North Dallas County to one that has more local members from Anna and

surrounding cities. The growth of North Collin County has paid big dividends for the country club as Lair stated that the club is being used more now than ever before.

"We used to have events that would see about 20 people ten years ago," said Lair. "Those same events now are sellouts with 50 or 60 people."

“This rainy weather has certainly brought plenty of challenges our way,” said Band Director Angie Liss. “But I’m so proud of how our kids responded.”

The new multi-million dollar McKinney ISD Stadium was the site for the UIL Region 25 Marching Contest and, in contrast to less than 24 hours prior, the weather on Saturday was near perfect.

Assistant band director Julie Cook said, “The weather could not have been more beautiful albeit a bit too windy for the props. I thought we had our best run of the season.”

This year’s show was entitled ‘Child’s Play’ and included various nursery rhymes layered with classical music by Brahms, Mussorgsky & Haydn. Judges called the show the “perfect mix of playful and light-hearted-ness page 11

Texoma Home Educators, also known by their initials "T.H.E.", claimed seven awards: First place BEST Award, first place robot (outscoring the second place team by over 1,000 points in the finals), first place exhibit booth, first place marketing presentation, most elegant robot design, the "Top Gun" award for the most points scored in a single round, and the Judges Choice Award which was given for an outstanding display of sportsmanship in providing significant engineering assistance to another team.

The team consists of 10 middle-school and 22 high-school students. Twelve of the team members are new to the competition this year. Students come from Bells, Denison, Sherman, Howe, Van Alstyne, Anna, and Melissa.

T.H.E. is advancing to the state contest, which will be held in Frisco on Nov 30 - Dec 1.

HOWE, Texas – A Melissa woman is in the Grayson County Jail after a traffic stop in Howe Sunday morning led to the discovery of narcotics, a pistol, cash, and drug paraphernalia.

At 6:30 a.m., Sergeant Keith Milks stopped a vehicle on U.S. Highway 75 for multiple traffic violations and deployed narcotics detection-certified K9 Loki who alerted to the odor of narcotics in the vehicle. Milks conducted a probable cause search of the car and found three ounces of marihuana, nearly three grams of methamphetamine, and a variety of prescription medications. All of the narcotics had been packaged for sale.

Milks also found scales, baggies, a revolver, and nearly $900 in cash.

Christen Anderson, 24, of Melissa, was arrested and booked into the Grayson County Jail for manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, delivery of marihuana, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a dangerous drug.

If God’s people will humble themselves and pray When we consider the word revival and more specifically within the Christian faith, we think of a series of evangelistic meetings with the Dr. Billy intention to Holland increase interest in God. If we look more closely, we notice that being revived is the act of being restored and renewed back to a former place. Similar words that are associated with being revived are, reinvigorate, revitalize, refresh, restore, energize, rejuvenate, regenerate, and stimulate. Within the context of our spiritual life, we see that a personal revival is a positive experience that convicts us to rearrange our priorities in order to give God a higher place in our life. This stirring of the soul brings a fresh awareness and rekindles the desire to follow the Lord with a renewed zeal and deeper commitment. If we once had a genuine and exciting relationship with God but now for some reason we have drifted away, our intimacy with him can be restored by humbling ourselves and calling upon him. We do not need to attend a church meeting in order to repent or draw closer to Christ, we just need a passion and determination to be with him.

Through the years, there have been some very powerful spiritual movements recorded in places other than America such as China, Korea, India, Brazil, Nigeria, and Indonesia. These movements have generated enthusiasm interest in Christ and the Bible and has helped spread the gospel into areas where individuals were introduced to Christianity for the first time. One such example of a rich outpouring of the Holy Spirit in this country was the New York City revival of 1857. Theologians and historians agree this revival changed the minds and hearts of many people and helped establish a spiritual awareness at a time when the awareness of God was declining. There are several names given to this manifestation such as The Fulton Street Revival, Union

prayer meeting, The Third Great Awakening, and The Layman’s Prayer Revival just to name a few.

The years leading up to 1857 were defined by tremendous economic development as the United States was reaping a bountiful harvest of prosperity. As wealth became the focus, the desire and obsession were turning toward materialism.

Unfortunately, the younger generation was growing up without a reverential respect for God and were also becoming captivated by the love of money.

With church attendance falling, many congregations moved out into the suburbs to accommodate their remaining members.

However, one church in Manhattan decided to stay in the inner city and make themselves available to those who lived in the downtown areas.

They hired a man named Jeremiah Lanphier as a minister and missionary to lead this evangelistic vision, who proved to be a man of prayer and an effective and convincing speaker. Lanphier had a burden for souls and immediately began to visit homes, distribute Bibles and tracts, and preach the gospel. It was a slow start but after finding peace in his personal prayer time he began to sense that God was directing him to begin a daily time of prayer for all who felt the need to find some quiet time with the Lord. He advertised and invited men and women to slip into the church and focus on God and to call upon his mercy for a great spiritual awakening even if it was only for 5 minutes.

That very year, there was a terrible economic disaster that caused many people to lose their businesses. Banks closed and over 30,000 people lost their jobs in that city alone. There was also much tension over social issues as talk of a Civil War was growing stronger.

Before long, the prayer meetings had become so large the church could not hold the crowds, so new ones were started in other churches and public buildings around the city. According to eyewitnesses, within a few months it was estimated that over 10,000 people were attending these daily gatherings and it did not stop in New York, as a great wave of

excitement began sweeping across the country in places like Cleveland, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Washington DC. A simple prayer grew into a nation-wide revival which became one of the greatest spiritual movements since the reformation. It’s estimated that in the period between 1858 and 1859, one million people were converted

from a population of less than 30 million. I am grateful for the promise in II Chronicles 7:14 and as many today have become distracted we are once again in need of a spiritual awakening.

Texas History Minute It was a rundown series of old buildings in the bustling downtown of a growing city. Instead of being completely demolished, the second floor was removed instead and rebuilt the walls of the first floor between 1913 and 1916. Jessica Doty is a senior at Tarleton State University from Howe, Texas, majoring in biology with a business minor. She is a two-year TTM where she served in the capacity of Duck Camp and New Student Registration Staff. Doty is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and she has served on the Alpha Omicron Pi Cabinet as property manager. She is the Tarleton Wesley Pastoral Intern as well as the Communications Coordinator on the Tarleton Wesley’s leadership team. She is a member of Tarleton’s Honors College. Doty said her favorite tradition is Silver Taps. She said, “I think it is so unique to see everything come full

Can I furnish an apartment for $300?

Hi Taylor - I’m moving into my first apartment and I have an issue - the apartment is unfurnished and I have about $300 to spend on furniture.

Am I sleeping and sitting on the floor or do I have some options here? -

Lark Hey Lark - That’s not a lot of money to furnish an apartment, but I have faith you’ll pull it off.

You might have to adjust your expectations, but here are a few ways to make it all work.

Even if you end up having lots of mismatched things, that can just be part of the charm of your kitchen.

3. Ask about sale days for furniture. Most second-hand stores end up drastically reducing prices on furniture from time to time because they need to move inventory and make more space.

Living with children As the current school year kicked off, I began hearing the same-old, same-old report from teachers and principals: children who have never lied. At least, that is what the John Rosemond parents of said children claim.

When one of these highly-evolved kids is accused of misbehaving at school, his parents ask him for his side of the story, his take on what really happened. And sure enough, the child’s story does not match the teacher’s report. The teacher, for example, swears she saw the accused deliberately trip another child during recess. The trip resulted in facial injuries and two broken teeth. The accused claims he only stuck his foot out because he thought his $450 sneakers were untied and that the victim just happened to be running by at the time.
