Hats off to the Class of 2018
Erin Blackburn recently set the school record for the 100 meters with a time of 12.05 in the regional meet. The record has some family significance as she broke my mom's 'yards-to-meters adjusted' record. My mom, Carlene Wilson (now Walker, obviously) ran an 11.2 in the 100-yard dash at the state track meet on May 15, 1970 (remember the date). Converted to meters, the time is 12.14. A few years later, I was born on May 15, 1974 which became something her and I have often talked about - a very special date to my mom. So when Blackburn ran a 12.05 to eclipse the 48-year-old record, we then became a little spooked because Blackburn was born May 15, 2000. Creepy, huh? By the way, Laura Schneider held the former non-adjusted record with a time of 12.66. In eighth grade, I got a little cocky by winning every 100 meter race and my coaches wanted to calm my ego a bit. They made me race Schneider who was a little older than me - and obviously a girl. They enjoyed the outcome and loved constantly telling me that I couldn't even beat a girl. Thanks Coach Beaty. Back in July 1936 the front page of the Howe Messenger stated that they were not going to publish a newspaper for the first two weeks of August due to vacation. That got me thinking... Hmm...
