Howe's That Nearly four years ago I sat down with my old high school principal. It was a different setting. I wanted to tell the story of his life. I was no longer a dumb high school kid, and he was no longer an intimidating person of authority. He was a frail, kind, and sweet old man that was heartbroken over the death of the love of his life. We reminisced, we laughed, we cried, and we hugged. He was a huge positive influence in my life as just about all of our educators were. We recorded our conversation and if you knew Mr. Gilstrap, you’ll understand that I nearly had to change batteries twice. He was a great man, and wonderful calming influence on some dumb high school boys. I will miss him, but I’ll always be able to hear his voice. I'll never forget that Sept. 2016 day that Joe King walked through the office door downtown and said, "You come with me." He then took me on a history excursion showing me where Summit actually was and not where people think it was. He told me about Buck Owens being born on what is now Dr. Smithwick's property. He showed me old roads that led to Sherman that are now tree lines and generally wanted to pass along the history of this town as he knew it to the next generation.
