Two youth Howe football Local homeschoolers take top honors at area robotics teams win their Super competition Bowl Championships

a Texoma Home Educators, a team made up of homeschoolers in and around Grayson County, took top honors among 52 teams at last weekend's BEST Robotics competition. The team garnered first place overall, third place robot, and top presentation, and will be competing in the state championship in early December.

BEST, which stands for

Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology, began at TI in Sherman in 1993 and has spread nationwide to include over 20,000 public, private, and home school students. Anyone who's ever put on an event understands that nothing is guaranteed - especially the first time an event is held. The Chamber of Commerce's Downtown Howe-lloween was the brainchild of several individuals and organizations and the result was an amazing turnout for a twoand-a-half-hour event.

Most vendors that lined up in the streets ran out of candy to hand out. The First United Methodist Church brought many games and much candy and helped make the event the success that it was.

It appears now that this is an annual event after the successful evening.

Fond memories with my Grandparents

Dr. Billy Holland An older man was telling a story the other day about his grandparents and it caused me to think back to when I was a kid and the relationship I had with my mamaw and papaw. Now that I’m older, I realize that grandparents look forward to spoiling their grandchildren and are usually just as excited. When I was growing up, my dad and his dad worked together in their own construction business and every so often in the summer, my papaw would take me home with him. Sometimes, I would stay for a whole week and those adventures were some of my most cherished childhood memories. On the way to the country, it was not uncommon for me to become car sick because the roads were so curvy, but hanging my head out the window did bring some relief. When we arrived, I would feel weak and my grandmother would say I looked as white as a sheet, but with her administering every remedy she could think of, it didn’t take long for me to recover. You see, I was the first child and the first grandchild, so with being the center of attention you could say I was a little spoiled. They were always squeezing me and kissing me so much that I could hardly breathe, but it’s a good feeling to know you are loved.

and hardly recognized the place. It was so tiny and even the land which seemed like a vast plantation to me back then was actually more like five acres. As a kid, their house looked beautiful to me but it was really just an old farmhouse that my papaw had tried to patch and piece together. The front yard seemed as big as a football field and I remember one day my papaw wanted to see if he could beat me in a foot race from the driveway to the garden. I can still feel the hot summer air against my face while out of the corner of my eye I could see his bare feet flying past me. I slowed down and started laughing as I knew he was not feeling well. He had a debilitating kidney disease and I discovered later that even though he did not say anything that day, the overexertion caused him a lot of pain and we never did that again. He did it because he loved me and just wanted to play and have some fun with me. In behind the house, the yard steeply dropped off into what many people call a holler, and if you were willing to climb down a steep cliff, you would find yourself on the bank of the Kentucky river. Across the road were fields of tall grass as far as you could see sprinkled with patches of large trees and if you were real quiet sometimes you could hear them majestically sway in the wind along with the lonely sound of a cawing crow.

Every time my mind goes back to these special times, my eyes cannot hold back the tears. Someone said, “Grandparents make the world a little softer...a little kinder...and a

At bedtime I would sleep with them in a massive feather-bed. Howe PD arrests two individuals with ten pounds of marijuana

Van Alstyne Police Officer Colton Raper (left) and Howe officer Brando Ozuna (right) The Howe Police Department arrested a Grayson County couple early Monday morning after a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 75 that netted nearly ten pounds of marijuana and more than $3,000 in retail merchandise that is presumed to have been stolen.

Ricardo Lara, 33, of Denison, and 25-year-old Karla CovarrubiasHuerta of Sherman were booked into the Grayson County Jail for Delivery of Marijuana (5 to 50 pounds) and Tampering with Physical Evidence.

The arrests resulted from a traffic stop during which the occupants of the vehicle driven by Lara attempted to discard the marijuana from their moving vehicle.

Howe officers are working with retail establishments to determine the origin of the merchandise found in the vehicle to determine if additional charges are warranted.

The officer was Howe officer Brando Ozuna. Van Alstyne Police Officer Colton Raper assisted.

They were pinned down by machine gun fire, and Garcia was wounded. He carefully crawled to a position near the machine gun nest, hurled a grenade, and shot three enemy troops to take out the gun. A second machine gun opened fire, and Garcia again

Garcia had shed blood defending his adopted country and the freedoms for which it stood. Now his blood was shed because of bigotry. Journalists across the nation condemned the treatment of the Medal of Honor recipient.

Former Gov. James Allred stepped up and served as his attorney.

Through his powerful defenders, Garcia was able to win delays for a trial. In 1947, prosecutors quietly dismissed the case.

Afterward, he was able to get his American citizenship in 1947 and worked with civil rights groups to fight segregation and other unjust laws. He returned to school and earned his high school diploma in 1951.

Howe Elementary Top Dogs

Jennifer Daniels/Howe Enterprise. stripped the ball from the Pirate ball carrier which gave Howe the ball at their own 47 yard line. On Howe's first play, Garrett Rodgers ran 42 yards to the five yard line that set up a Beaudy Kuykendall quarterback keeper only two plays later. How'e PAT was no good and the Bulldogs led, 6-0 early.

The ensuing kickoff pinned Collinsville within their own 20 yard line. The Pirates ran the ball three times with each tackle being made by Ingram. Collinsville was forced to punt it back to Howe who eventually would punt it right back to them.

At 2 pm, the fifth and sixth grade Dogs faced Blue Ridge who came into the game, 8-1 and outscored their opponents by a hefty margin.

Howe won the coin toss and elected to defer. The Dogs defense forced a turnover on downs and Howe offense quickly moved the ball down the field with runs by Braden Ulmer and Cooper Jones.

Ulmer eventually scored from the two yard line to cap off the 4-play drive.

On the first play of the second quarter, Howe quarterback Jacob Campbell scored on a 49-yard naked bootleg to give Howe the 12-0 lead.

With penalties and backfield tackles made by Owen Carr and Gage Owens, Collinsville faced a fourth and 18 and gave it back to Howe who took the 6-0 lead to the half.

Howe again forced a turnover on downs which set up another big drive led again by long runs by Jones and Ulmer. The touchdown came on a 7-yarder by Ulmer who showed great second-effort to get Howe received the kick to start the in. Howe led 19-0 after the half and both teams traded fourMarshall Larsen PAT run. and-outs until 3:01 left in the game when Vincent Castellanos rand the Blue Ridge connected on a 62-yard second touchdown in for the pass to Christian Walker to give Bulldogs. the Tigers their first points againt Howe in six quarters. The PAT Collinsville had the final was unsuccessful and Howe clung possession, but the Dogs defense to a 19-6 lead with 1:23 left before denied them once again and with the half.

Collinsville out of timeouts, the game ended with Howe on top, 12- Howe answered right back with a 0.

Campbell to Jones to give Howe the 25-6 lead with one second remaining in the half.

Howe took the ball to start the second half and turned it over on downs deep in Blue Ridge territory. However, Blue Ridge's pass on first down was intercepted

by Rowdy Kuykendall who returned it 33 yards for the touchdown and a Howe 32-6 lead after Campbell ran in the 1-point conversion.

Walker, of the Tigers answered back with his third touchdown of the game moments later to narrow the Howe lead to 32-19 with 4:07 left.

Howe took the ball back and killed the clock with runs by Kolin Murphy and Ashton Trevino as the team celebrated with their 39-19 win to finish the season with a perfect 10-0 record. The team outscored their opponents this season, 321-33.

The Tigers running back, Walker, raced around the right side for 52 yards and a score to narrow the Howe lead, 32-12.

The win for the fifth and sixth grade was the third time they have won the Super Bowl as a group. The team also finished with a 29-game winning streak.

Headed to the fourth quarter, big runs by Campbell and Garren Lankford set up Howe's final score, a 17-yard score by Jesse Portman right up the middle.

Portman also ran in the point after and Howe led, 39-12 with 4:32 left in the game.

Coaches of both teams want to thank the parents for their support throughout the entire season and many seasons as well as all of the cheerleaders for their hard work and support throughout the years.
