Howe's That We were surprised last week with a phone call from the Press Club of Dallas telling us that the Howe Enterprise is in the finals for the Hugh Aynesworth Award for an article we published about the tornado in 2016. The article was not so much about the tornado as it was the amazing community in which we live.

We will dress fancy for an awards banquet at the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas on Nov. 30 to see if we are the winners in the "Weekly Newspaper" category. The other publication is from Brownwood, Texas. Should we win the award, we will have to give a two-minute speech in front of amazing journalists from all over the State of Texas. I am anything but a trained journalist, so there will be some nerves involved that evening.

The Howe High School Marching Band, 'Pride of Howe', competed at the NETEX Marching Contest at Texas A&M Commerce.

There were 22 bands in attendance with over half of those being of 4A and 5A classifications. Howe finished number 10 overall.

Competition rules state that 10 bands advance to finals but four of those spots were reserved for the classification winners, so although Howe finished with a much higher score than the Class 1A and 2A winners, those schools were able to compete in the finals in the 10th spot).

"We got wonderful comments and feedback which will help us know what we're doing right and where we can improve," said Band Director Angie Liss. " My goal in competing at this contest was to get a good run on a turf field in a contest setting

so that we could get those 'first contest jitters' out and work out some of the kinks of staging our show."

Every school that finished ahead of Howe, even those in Class 3A, were much larger schools than HHS. The scored were very tight with only a couple of points separating fourth through tenth place.

"With all the bigger schools there I didn't necessarily expect to make finals but when we got so close, I really wish we could have gotten that second run in the finals because I know and the kids know we could have done some things better," said Liss.

The Pride of Howe will go to work this week to improve on what was a very good performance and compete next Saturday, Oct. 7 in Aubrey at 2:15

Howe Middle School Principal asks parents for help with crowded campus Howe Middle School Principal Clay Wilson is seeing the traffic effects of the overcrowded campuses of the Howe Elementary and Howe Middle School.

This week, he sent a memo home to parents pleading to help keep the students safe on the block that is seeing an estimated 50 more vehicles at drop-off and pick-up times.

Wilson's reminder was to:

1) Drivers, please stay off cell phones, 2) Parents walking with students, please observe the crosswalks and staff facilitating traffic and 3) Do not park on or near the half circle on the east side of the HMS building.

Please pull up past the driveway. Traffic gets congested near the flag pole if students are picked up near that area.

A thank you from Coach Simmons On Sept. 22 at 9 am, I walked into the Howe High School gym, for our homecoming pep rally. When I walked into the gym I was touched deep in my heart by an incredible, wonderful, and blessed experience. Every Howe Bulldog in Howe ISD from kindergarten to the senior class along with teachers, administrators, and friends had on a t-shirt bearing my name. Howe ironic, because my heart. Bears all their names. My heart gears the names of all my Bulldogs from 1987-2017. Some were in high school and middle school when I first arrived. My other Bulldogs being members of my famed 36 divisions. All marching through the halls of the Howe Elementary and P.E. program, all marching into Bulldog history and all marching right into my heart.

I don't know how Pam Kirby was able to organize the event without me knowing. Even my wife Doreen was a soldier of the secret. The pep rally was an awesome event. The cheerleaders, band, athletes, coaches, faculty, administration, employees, family, friends, and all the Howe Bulldogs truly took the flame to the very top.

CAMP DRAGONFLY – Children’s Grief Camp October 20-22, 2017 Sherman, Texas, September 25, 2017 – Registration for Camp Dragonfly is now open. Camp Dragonfly is a weekend retreat, led by professional clinicians and trained staff, for children ages 8-12 who have suffered the loss of a loved one. All activities at Camp Dragonfly are designed to help children heal and live successfully after loss. During the weekend, campers have the opportunity to participate in art activities, games, nature hikes, discussions, and a campfire with s’mores.

“Campers learn ways to process feelings and treasure memories.

Camp is not about forgetting, it is about healing. We use exercises to help the children learn to process grief and then fun activities to practice the coping skills they are learning,” said Nancy Jackson, Community Development Director and Camp Director. “Children grieve differently than adults. Some children have behavioral problems, some struggle with schoolwork, some become argumentative or fearful, some hesitate to be away from a parent, and many don’t like to be alone.”

Howe PD arrests two with cocaine on US Highway 75

Both subjects were checked through Grayson County dispatch and advised that Hamilton (driver) had a JP-2 Warrant. Martinez (passenger) was arrested for PCS PG1 > 4g < 200g and Tampering with Evidence. Hamilton was arrested for the warrant.

Howe seventh grader injured in ATV accident Social media was flooded on Sunday morning calling for prayers for young Tate Harvey, a Howe seventh grader who was involved in an ATV accident on Saturday night. The young boy received multiple fractures of the skull that included brain bleeding with multiple contusions on his brain. All prayers are encouraged

for the Harvey family that has been so gracious to the Howe community over the years.

Harvey is the youngest of six siblings and is a standout athlete in middle school sports.

He is the son of Brice and Keri Harvey of Howe.

On Sept. 22 at 9:52 pm, a Howe Police Officer saw a silver Chevy Cobalt without a tag light traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 75 at Farmington Rd. The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and spoke with the driver 24-year-old Tyler Wade Hamilton of Durant and passenger 26-year-old Marcos Torres Martinez of Durant. The officer conducted a consensual search of the vehicle where cocaine was found in the passenger seat. The officer located 17.6 grams of cocaine on the ground by Martinez’s feet. The cocaine was stepped on and looked like someone had tried to destroy it by scooting it across the ground.

Protecting our spiritual sensitivity

Dr. Billy Holland A couple of months ago, we brought a new English Bulldog puppy into our home and he has been such a wonderful addition to our family. When we bought him, they told us he was 8 weeks old, but after finally receiving his papers from the breeder, we noticed he was actually only 6 weeks old at the time. He was a healthy bruiser and we would laugh at him stumbling and being uncoordinated, but now we realize it was just because he was such a young baby. We would sit on the front porch in the evenings and watch him investigate around the front yard. He was so happy as he would roll around in the grass and explore his new surroundings, but when he would hear a loud commotion or a noisy car passing by, it would scare him and he would come running to us. After a while, he gradually became more used to the traffic sounds and lawn mowers and eventually it did not bother him at all. As I was spending time with him one evening, it dawned on me that our conscience is also sensitive to what we see, hear, and think about and how each of us can choose to remain tender-hearted or we can become calloused and indifferent.

When we are confronted with sin, maybe we should consider running to God for protection.

In our defense, we consider this intrusion as meddling and no ones business, including our creator. The Bible defines this as conviction which are the uncomfortable feelings that we feel whenever we know we are doing something wrong but love it too much to stop. I can relate to this daily battle because I struggle just like everyone else. Our old human nature is opposed to virtuous living and is always willing to fight for its independence.

As we saw with the puppy’s development, we notice similar reactions with those who live close to railroad tracks or airports but they eventually get used to the sounds. We have several clocks in our home that are bonging and gonging all the time and when people come in, they say wow listen to all those chimes while we do not even notice them. It’s one thing to get used to sights and sounds that do not hinder our spiritual life, but it’s dangerous to let our guard down when it comes to accepting things that are contrary to God’s standard of sanctification. I am reminded of the old Dick Van Dyke show where even though Rob and Laura were married, there were two separate beds in the bedroom. Back then even the idea of a married couple in the same bed was socially and morally taboo and that was only fifty years ago. What When we consider our spiritual happened to our modesty? Bulldogs 4 Bulldogs announce "Silver Spike Tailgate Party"

The Bulldogs 4 Bulldogs PAC has announced that they will host a tailgate party prior to the 55th Battle of the Silver Spike on Oct. 20.

The group will have free hamburgers and hot dogs and more. Their intention is to gain support for the upcoming crucial bond election for the Howe ISD which is facing overcrowding issues at the elementary school.

The Howe ISD Board of Trustees voted in favor of moving forward with a plan that would construct a new $17 million, four-grade-level campus that would allow for prekindergarten, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade to be housed in the new building on a

tract of land yet to be determined.

The campus would allow for more room at the existing elementary and middle school campuses which are currently sharing one cafeteria forcing students to rotate lunch times from 10 am - 2 pm.

Howe ISD says that enrollment is growing at nine percent per year.

The bond is estimated to cost $14.31 per month on a $100,000 home, $23.85 per month on a $150,000 home, $33.40 per month on a $200,000 home, and $42.94 per month on a $250,000 home.

Early voting starts Oct. 23 through Nov. 3 at the Howe Community Center. The actual election day is Nov. 7 at the same location.

Former Howe student involved in British debate BROWNWOOD – September 29, 2017 – Two members of Howard Payne University’s Student Speaker Bureau speech and debate team will publicly debate members of the British National Debate Team on Sunday, October 15, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The exhibition event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Richard and Wanda Jackson Conference Room of HPU’s Paul and Jane Meyer Faith and Life Leadership Center.

Championship and a finalist in junior varsity at the National Christian College Forensics Association national championship. He also achieved a semifinalist finish in individual parliamentary debate at the Texas Intercollegiate Forensics Association Fall Championship.

Olin is a former Howe Eagle Scout and recently received a large Hatton W. Sumners scholarship and is now a Sumners scholar.

Howe's third and fourth grade beat S&S, 20-6 The third and fourth grade Bulldogs played S&S in Collinville on Saturday and came away with a 206 win. The coaches say the team has finally gelled and are playing as a team.
