http://howeenterprise.com/ Volume #55, Edition #3
Howe's That Back in 2013, some old Howe Enterprise and Howe Messenger newspapers were found inside the old First Christian Church as part of a Howe historical collection. The Howe Messenger predated the Enterprise and was in circulation from around 1924 to the mid-1940s. Most of the 1940-42 editions were in the old church laying on a table in the wide open air. Mice had destroyed a few of the pages of Howe's history, but quite a few were salvaged. I was fortunate enough to receive a grant for the University of North Texas to digitally scan each edition (as well as the 1963-1979 Howe Enterprise collection that was found). It might have taken four years, but those editions have now been scanned and are available to the world to see. The 1940s papers were in such bad shape that I'm amazed that they were able to pull them apart from each other and scan them in their entirety. But the amazing staff at the Denton college saved Howe's history - one page at a time.

Overhaul of coaching staff was not the plan of athletic director
EXITING HOWE HIGH SCHOOL STAFF Howe ISD did what many wanted them to do back in 2013 and hired an athletic director who could take the varsity football program to an elite level. After a year of letting the dust settle, Zack Hudson constructed without question the greatest coaching staff in the history of the athletic program in Howe. But with
great success (eight playoff games in three seasons), other schools have come searching for the talented coaches Hudson had assembled. But the fifth year Howe head varsity football coach says that he's hired yet another staff that may even be more impressive than the one that just left.
HHS Valedictorian Landry Elvington's speech
It's been interesting to read the old newspapers about our city and the things that were happening some 77 years ago in our fine town. For instance, Miss Mame Roberts one had a weekly column "Know Your Neighbor" in which she spotlighted a citizen each week so that people could learn more about each other. The subtitle to each week's article read: "If I knew you and you knew me -If both could clearly see. And with an inner sight devine The meaning of your heart and mine, I'm sure we would differ less, And clasp our hands in friendliness." One can learn so much though by just taking a stroll through town some 77 years ago.

ENTERING HOWE HIGH SCHOOL STAFF From the outside looking in, it appears that there could be issues with keeping coaches in Howe, but when taking the view from 30,000 feet, Dale West, the football offensive coordinator who brought his 1950s style slot-t run game that eventually obliterated the Howe rushing record book, left for an upgraded position. He accepted the athletic director position and head football coaching position at Collinsville. West eventually hired Josh Rollins and Richard
McAdams from Howe for his new staff for the Pirates. Wes Rhoten left Howe for the offensive coordinator position at Canton High School which is closer to family. Varsity baseball coach Heath Grant, who also assisted with football will now be a junior high coach due to a necessitated family decision. Head volleyball coach Jordan Dusek also left to take a job closer to family. And Macy Wright is moving to middle school sports only because of a Continued on page 2
Howe is loaded with summer camps for young athletes
Landry Elvington delivering his speech. Michelle Carney/Howe Enterprise Principal Teafatiller, members of the school board, administration, teachers, parents, friends, and fellow graduates, it is an honor to speak to all of you today as your valedictorian. Graduates, after 4 long years, we are finally finished with this thing called High School. In the wise words of Drake, we “started from the bottom now we’re here.” I think we all still remember literally being at the bottom of the totem pole, coming into high school afraid that Freshman Friday was real and that if we went into the bathroom alone we would end up head-first in a trash can. Soon, we found out that high school isn’t like the movies. Continued on page 5
Two Lone Star Hoops campers from 2016. Just when you were getting used to having the kids at home and then wondering how in the world you'll make it with them there instead of at school, announcements were made
to get them out of the house and keep them busy with sports camps in Howe. The most immediate camp will be the Bulldogs Continued on page 4
