Howe's That When taking over the Enterprise back in 2014, we made it very clear that the Howe's That column would not be about our family and our kids. But, Friday night will certainly be a big night for the Walker family.

With Bob Walker being inducted into the Howe Hall of Honor, the entire Walker family will be on-hand.

The chamber put out online voting from the community for all of the community awards and it so happens that this little online rag is nominated for Business of the Year. And to make the Irish Walker skin blush even more, the editor/sales person/photographer/ad creator/writer/office manager/ billing manager/collections manager/ and overall community lover has been nominated for Citizen of the Year. Just when you think you've found humility, you've lost it.

We at the chamber may not have anything to do with selecting those that are honored, but we are responsible for Founders Day which will happen on Saturday. We never know if it will be a grand success, such as last year's event. Or whether it will be a grand flop...like some of our "Back to School Blues" nights that we've had recently. The weather should be good, the band will be entertaining, and there will be lots of food and games. So get off your duff and have some dang fun by "fella-shippin" in the old downtown.

Norman, Gilstrap to highlight Hall of Honor Friday night

Leaders of Howe from days gone by (and one who is still leading the charge) will be enshrined into the Howe Hall of Honor on Friday night in Downtown Howe.

Four members which consists of two living and two deceased will join the 15 previously selected members. This years inductees Jean Norman, Donal Gistrap, J.J. Chisum,

and Bob Walker will join Jabez Haning, W.P. Thompson, A.M. Ferguson, Mame Roberts, Charles R. Thompson, Arthur Boyle, Tony Brinkley, L.B. Kirby, Norma Wallace, Ray Bledsoe, Carrie Waller, Elmer Schenk, Norman Dickey, Jimmy Bearden, and Steve Simmons.

Live music, vendors, food, car show, kid train and games planned for City of Howe's Founders Day Saturday in downtown

My wife said I need to grow up. I was speechless. It's hard to say anything when you have 45 gummy bears in your mouth.

The Howe Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the City Howe's 31st Annual Founders Day this Saturday. The event is now a late afternoon and evening gathering, starting at 2 pm and ending at 8 pm. Bent Creek Band is starting at 4 pm which features Howe local Brent Hollensed on lead vocals.

Don't forget about the community garage sale at Memorial Park on Saturday from 8 am - noon. It is being hosted by Keep Howe Beautiful and by Save the Church. There are some leftover auction items there.

All throughout the day there will be food and games for kids and games for adults such as domino and horseshoe tourney. But the big contest is the annual Riding Lawmower Race that will take place at 6:45 pm in a drag race format on Haning Street in downtown. As of of Continued on page 6

The chamber received 181 responses in the online voting which also included nominations for the category of Business of the Year, New Business of the Year, Norma J. Wallace Citizen of the Year, and Volunteer Organization of the Year. The winners of those categories will be announced at the Third Annual Howe Hall of Honor & Awards Banquet on May 5 at 6:30 pm.

been a longtme member and church leader at the First Baptist Church of Howe. She was named the 1992 Norma J. Wallace Citizen of the Year and 25 years later was nominated once again for the award.

Donal Gilstrap, first-time nominee, was most known for his position as Howe High School principal during three different decades.

While also serving as elementary and middle school principal, it was his gentle, yet stern approach to leadership that won his respect among students and peers. Gilstrap grew up picking cotton in the 1940's and was not able to go to school until all of the cotton was picked, which was usually around November. His mother had a sixthgrade education and his dad received no education at all, but he was a hard oil field worker. That strength was a family trait as Gilstrap used his strength in football to earn himself a college degree at Hardin-Simmons. Post college, he spent four years in the Army including a free vacation to Korea. While stationed at Lawton, Oklahoma, he met the love of his life Barbara whom he married in 1959. Together, they had two children, Catherine and Patrick.

He was recruited to Howe by six school board members who drove to Lubbock to recruit him.

Jean Norman has been nominated now twice for the Hall of Honor.

She will go down in Howe history in much of the same regards as Mame Roberts - a true iconic figure among all of Howe's finest ladies. Her fingerprints of leadership are seen throughout the community from Ponderosa to Farmington. She was instrumental in forming the Howe Public Library and eventually the Howe Community Library. Her leadership helped breathe life into the former Howe First Christian Church, not once but twice.

Norman was a key member in the foundation and the formation of the Howe Historical Society in the 1980s and 90s and renovated the church previously to house a museum. Serving most recently as president of the Save the Church organization, the group has raised enough money to transform one of Howe's oldest buildings into a beautiful wedding venue. The series with S&S was changed from a three-gamer to a one-gamer due to UIL’s ruling of not allowing two games on Thursday night, which was to be played in S&S. With the ruling, the game was relocated to Gunter for Wednesday and the field, despite great efforts from Gunter ISD, was on the sticky side. That was evident as the field conditions played a role in the very first batter Howe faced. A bouncing ball was tapped back to pitcher Torrey Stubblefield who turned to throw to second baseman Madisyn Hargrove covering first base. However, Hargrove slipped and never made it to the bag and the runner was safe. At that point, things seemed to unravel for the Lady Bulldogs in the first inning as Stubblefield then fielded a bunt and quickly made an errant throw to first base to Hargrove covering which resulted in an error and runners at the corners with no outs. Howe then traded a run for an out on a grounder to Blackburn.

The next batter hit a grounder just out of the reach of Hargrove which allowed the second run of the inning to come in.

“That was a big part of it.” Said Martin. “We had to get something going. It was hard at first because we couldn’t get anyone on base to get bunts going. We knew that the first and third baseman were playing deep and were not coming up. So we just went down the lines.”

Howe trailed 2-0 after the first frame and couldn’t get on top of the constant high fastball from S&S’s lefty Jada Muller. The Lady Bulldogs popped out five times of their first nine outs in the game.

Howe head coach Jeff Martin then changed the strategy in stride and forced the game into the S&S defense via an attack of bunts. The Lady Rams had trouble picking the ball off of the sticky surface and making the plays. In the top of the fourth, Peyton Streetman walked with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a bunt by Hargrove. The run cut the Lady Rams’ lead in half at 2-1.

The game was turned around in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a tremendous at bat by Payton Griffin. The tall power hitter worked a full count and fouled off several pitches to stay alive before drawing a leadoff walk.

Consecutive bunts by Dani Ross and Kamryn Fulenchek loaded the bases with no one out. Emily Sanders then hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Griffin to tie the game at 2-2. Erin Blackburn followed with a single up the middle to drive in Ross and give Howe their first lead of the night at 3-2.

Beyond the first inning, starting pitcher Stubblefield began to settle in and faced only two over the minimum in the last five innings of the game. Overall, she struck out nine batters while walking two, allowing one earned run on three hits and went the distance by throwing 119 pitches. S&S starting pitcher Muller also threw a complete game, striking out eight, walking four and allowing four earned runs on seven hits. She threw 125 total pitches.

“I thought the kids showed a lot of grit tonight. We didn’t play very well and left too many people on base.” Said Martin. “It’s about surviving and advancing.”

Hartsfield signs to play football at Hendrix College

Tanner Hartsfield signs his scholarship letter to play football at Hendrix College in Arkansas. Howe Enterprise photo Johnny Burnett, Assistant Head Coach at Hendrix College in Arkansas made a trip down to see Howe's Tanner Hartsfield about playing football for them. A visit was scheduled with the college and the Hartsfield family. Knowing that other local players such as Levi Jones of Van Alstyne will also be going to Hendrix made the decision much easier.

The common theme that everyone talks about when it comes to Hartsfield is his work ethic. Howe Head Football Coach Zack Hudson raved about his ability to out-work other people.

"His intensity that he plays with is just one of those things you can't replace and you can't teach. Howe History Minute: Newspapers and Beautification From "90s...Then and Now; A Historical Cookbook", 1991

Over the years several newspapers have served Howe. The first was the Howe Herald published by the Hall brothers in the early 1900s (we have a 1907 issue of the Herald that was useful for information for this book, thanks to Waldine Stockton Vivrett). The subscription cost was $1.00 a year. The Howe Chronicle, published as early as 1917 was published by A.M. Ferguson (brother of Texas Governor James Ferguson) and his son, James E. Ferguson. The Howe Messenger was published in the 1930s and 1940s with Russell Bryant as the owner and editor. The Howe Enterprise was established in 1963 by Pop Sloan. Howe again had a newspaper after 20 years without one. Other owners of the Enterprise have been Bob Walker, Jim and Nita Echols and present day owners are Dale and Lana Rideout (Editors Note: Monte Walker, grandson of second owner Bob Walker, purchased the Enterprise in 2014).

In the 1930s through the energetic efforts of Miss Mame Roberts, Howe gained international fame with its campaign for civic attractiveness. Miss Roberts directed a drive of the Howe Garden Club that led to the creation of flower beds all over town.

Howe has continued to grow over the years, with a population near 2,500 as of the preliminary 1990 census. (Editor’s note: Howe’s population in 2016 is close to, if not greater than 3,000).

A new four-lane highway – the present Highway 75 – was opened in October 1967.

The access road on either side of the highway was named Collins Freeway in honor of the W.W. Collins family. The old Highway 75 became State Highway 5, also known as Denny Street. With the opening of the new highway, new businesses opened up along it. Most of the old buildings are still downtown and most of them are occupied (Editor’s note: In 2016, all of the remaining buildings in downtown have been restored and all are occupied. Since 1991, three historic buildings were either razed or torn down.) These buildings are so full of history there is no way to tell it all.

Visitors to Howe were startled to see the lovely flowers, the well-kept yards, the neatly painted homes, all made possible by the efforts of Miss Roberts. Several of the nation’s magazines, including the Reader’s Digest, carried stories about Miss Mame and the wonders she worked in Howe.

In 1964 Howe State Bank opened, the first bank in Howe since the 1930s. It is located at the corner of Haning and Denny. The first board of directors organizing the bank included: A.L. Geer, chairman; O.W. Lamb of Sherman; P.K. Carmichael of Dallas; Geer and Edwin E. Hayes of Anna; W.J. Trice fo Whitewright; and In 1972 Howe celebrated its 100th birthday E.F. Arterbury, C.C. Jones, N.R. Langford, with a grand celebration. On May 8, 1986 Jack Norman, Marshall Robertson, and L.S. Howe helped Texas celebrate its 150th Thompson, all of Howe. N.R. Great storytelling is an honored tradition across the South and the Southwest. Texas, with its long history of engaging characters and adventures, has produced many tales to tell. Perhaps one of the most respected storytellers was writer and professor J. Frank Dobie.

Born James Frank Dobie on September 26, 1888, a love of literature and the open prairie was instilled in him from birth. The family lived on a modest ranch in Live Oak County in South Texas.

Dobie was the oldest of six children, and he worked the ranch with his family from a young age.

In the evenings, after the day’s chores had been completed, his father read to him and the other children from the family Bible while his mother read classic works of literature to them.

In order to finish high school, Dobie moved in with his grandparents in nearby Alice in 1904. After his 1906 graduation, he enrolled at Southwestern University in Georgetown. Armed with an education, life moved quickly for Dobie. After earning his bachelors degree, he began writing for a number of newspapers for a year before accepting a teaching position in 1911. Two years later, he left for Columbia University in New York City to pursue a masters degree in English. He returned to Texas in 1914 and began teaching at the University of Texas.

He wrote on his most famous works, the award-winning Coronado’s Children, in 1930.

The book amassed tales of treasure-hunters and lost treasures. Ultimately, Dobie would publish more than 20 books in his lifetime.

By 1939, he had a weekly newspaper column in which he not only discussed Texas culture but railed against the political injustices of the day. The state legislature became a frequent target of his barbs. He openly called for integrating the University of Texas in the early 1940s, leading him to clash with numerous state leaders. His fame grew to where he was invited to teach American History at Cambridge University during World War II. In 1944, while still overseas, he angrily protested the Dobie enlisted in the army as the firing of a fellow UT professor for United States entered World War I his liberal views, leading to his in 1917. After serving in the own dismissal by 1947. artillery for two years, he returned to the university in 1919. Carolyn Cherry was named the 2015 Norma J. Wallace Citizen of the Year. The 2016 award will be presented Friday night. the second straight year, was perhaps the most loved man in Howe from the time he opened Chisum's One Stop Grocery Store in July of 1957. He was called the "One-Man- Chamber of Commerce" as he helped give information to anyone that asked.

Mr. Chisum often ran open tickets for families knowing well he would never get paid. His response was always that he couldn't stand to see anyone not have food on their table. Mr. Chisum was the Norma J. Wallace Citizen of the Year in 1985.

Friday night will see the winners of the various chamber awards as well as the inductions. Business of the Year nominees are Abby's Restaurant, the Howe Enterprise, and Stark Lane Farms.
