Question: Where does the name “Toby” jug originate from?
A song entitled “The Little Brown Jug,” popular in the 1760s, featured a character named Toby Philpots (aka Toby Fillpot) The name Toby jug or pitcher allegedly came from this song about drinking stout ale The Staffordshire district of England made these jugs in the late 18th century for export to America English-made these potteries included Doulton, Wilkinson, and Ralph Woods I Most of these small jugs featured a corpulent, jolly, old man with lank hair He usually wears a three-cornered hat that forms the pour spout Usually he is holding a jug or glass of beer and a pipe Designs other than the standard jolly fellow featured Punch and Judy, Napoleon, Father Christmas, Mr Pickwick, Prince Hal, and George II Their values range from $60 to several thousand dollars depending on design, manufacturer, and age There are several examples of female Tobies as well, often of the same design as a matching male figure One could speculate that they are Mr and Mrs Toby. You will also see some princess and queen-like figures
Some Tobies were made in America at the famous Bennington, Vermont factories between 1849 and 1858 Ben Franklin and the standard-design Tobies were depicted on Bennington-made Rockingham, flint enamel, and scroddled ware pitchers.

Tobies were made in Japan before and after the American occupation Collecting Japanese Toby jugs is a fun, inexpensive alternative to the escalating prices of English-made versions You can find examples for $10-15 for common examples maked “Japan” to $15-30 for those marked “Occupied Japan ” Both men and women were portrayed on Japanese Tobies. Many are just the head of the character, but they sometimes depict full-bodied characters holding accordions, mugs of beer, and baskets The two examples in this picture are marked Occupied Japan, but I have seen these very same figures marked Japan Even though they are the same those marked Occupied Japan command the highest prices
