Dwyer is 2016 Homecoming Queen
It was officially "Kaylee Dwyer Night" at Bulldog Stadium on Friday Howe High School's Drum Major and Varsity Cheerleader added Homecoming Queen to her list of accomplishments during this 2016-17 school year The Homecoming Court consisted of Dwyer, Hunter Brockelman, Anna Counts, Kamryn Fulenchek, and Landry Rhoten

Tim Helpenstell was later announced as the 2016 HHS Homecoming King photos on page 5 g
Coach Zack Hudson’s message to his team this week was assignment football That message resonated well as the Bulldogs defeated one of the best football teams in North Texas in the 2nd ranked Class 2A, Division II Muenster Hornets and gave Howe a winning and in the current decade at 35-34.
It was the first ever meeting between the two schools and in game number 734 in Howe school history. The two high-powered offenses could not be more different, continued on page 2

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away a fifth grade girl, now a sixth grader aced her STAAR test Actually, it happened very recently and the galaxy is on Beatrice Street Korie Bouse, who also is a Star Wars enthusiast, thanks in part to her father, became one of the very rare students to ever ace the STAAR test The fifth grade portion of the test included reading, science and math
One would think that massive amounts of extra studying would be required in order to ace the state test, but Bouse indicated that it was no more than normal "I just studied what the teachers asked me to "
But acing a test of that magnitude doesn't come without a certain amount of luck

3 yet equally effective Muenster is akin to a Viper with its sheik look which amassed 403 yards of offense somewhat equally distributed through run and pass However, Howe’s offense is an ageless classic 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 low to the ground and runs past everything in sight Howe captured 409 yards of offense – all on the ground (with presumably Born to Be Wild by Steppenwolf blaring during each play) But with all of the offensive momentum from both teams, it was the Howe “Black Plague” defense that first made the stand to put a stop to the scoring barrage in the early part of the game
Howe won the initial coin-toss and deferred to the second half giving Muenster initial possession in which they started at their own 25 yard line. The Hornets spread offense led by highly talented quarterback Blayn Jones immediately drove the length of the field in 3:56 seconds to score on a 2-yard touchdown by running back Parker McGrew The extra point gave Muenster the early 7-0 advantage That left 8:04 on the first quarter clock and Howe would take their first possession from their own 30 yard line The ‘Dogs wasted no time going the 70 yards needed, taking 2:35 to push it over with a 2-yard touchdown by Tyler Grisham With 5:24 left in the first and after a successful Brice
Honaker PAT, Howe tied the game at 7-7
Muenster would again start from their own 25 yard line due to Honaker’s booming kickoffs that landed out of the back of the end zone Quickly picking up yardage, the first glimpse of the Black Plague Defense was seen by holding the Hornets to a 31-yard Bryce Herr field goal The drive took 1:58 and left 3:32 in the first and gave Muenster a 10-7 lead But Howe again would stay toe-totoe thanks to a 55-yard kickoff return by Ty Harvey That led to a Honaker 23-yard field goal to tie the game at 10 with 1:38 remaining in the first.

Another Honaker kick out of the end zone forced Muenster to start at their own 25 yard line This drive is where the game changed. The Howe defense forced a 4th and 8 from Muenster at their own 27 yard line and Hornet Head Coach Brady Carney chose to have his great quarterback turn into a punter That would give Howe the ball at their own 37 with less than a minute remaining in the first Exactly three minutes and 63 yards later, Howe would take the lead for the first time on a 10-yard touchdown by Jaden Matthews, his first of the night and fourth of the year Howe led 17-10 after the Honaker PAT with 9:18 left in the continued on page 4 continued from page

Readiness (STAAR®) is the testing program for students in Texas public schools The assessments are based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the state-mandated curriculum STAAR brochures state that the curriculum contains content and skills students need to learn in order to be successful in the current grade and to make academic progress from year to year Each STAAR assessment measures what students are learning in a specific grade
Bouse, who has attended Howe ISD since kindergarten, found out late last school year that she had aced the reading and math portion of the exam That section of the test was returned soon after the test was taken

"We got ours back and I couldn't believe it I thought they made a mistake and I kept waiting for a different paper" said Bouse
But it was just recently that the science portion of the test was returned and that also was perfect 100 score which put her in a special class
"We have a few year to year do that for one or maybe two tests To do it for all three is rare " said Howe
Middle School Principal Clay Wilson Current eighth grader Jackson Adkins also aced the STAAR test when he was in fourth
Bouse said the perfect science score was surprising "I was surprised I thought it was a possibility because it would be like really awesome but I didn't think it would actually happen But when I got it back I was really excited."
Bouse says acing the test will put a little bit of pressure on her for following years because she will feel the need to ace it again, but says she can only do her best
Crediting her teachers for the success, she especially pointed out Mrs Henderson "I like her style of teaching She makes it interesting but academic at the same time "
What Bouse thought separates Howe from other schools is the discipline "Coach Simmons always tells us that other people (outside of Howe) always say that Howe's a really good school " said Bouse who followed by saying that it made her proud
Principal Wilson acknowledged her achievement in front of the entire middle school a few weeks back and as many pre-teen students, Bouse found it a little embarrassing
"It was cool, but I don't want to feel like I'm self centered I just stood there staring at the floor pretty much the entire time " said Bouse
Bouse is the daughter of Kevin and Shannon Bouse she had an older sister named Kaylin Their home on East FM 902 has become wellknown over the years during the holiday season as "The Star Wars Christmas house "

Bouse says that the family has always been big Star Wars enthusiasts "Kaylin grew out of it She used to have a whole Star Wars room for her bedroom but she now is a cool teenager, I guess My mom thinks it's cool, but she's not as crazy as my dad and I are about it I love Star Wars My dad has a full office that has Star Wars action figures Anyone who loves Star Wars would love that little room."
Bouse says her favorite Star Wars character is BB-8 which is the new droid in the newest movie Bouse has the droid on her back pack
Her Star Wars enthusiast dad

Kevin drives a bus route for Howe ISD, which the young STAAR destroyer says is fun "It's really fun because he drives me home because on the bus I'm on his route " said Bouse "It's kind of like every day my parent picks me up, but there's just a bunch of other kids "
The test itself is very controversial to teachers, parents and students but that conversation is for another day. It is a remarkable and outstanding achievement for any student, from any galaxy

Muenster would not go away quietly and followed that Howe 63-yard scoring drive with their own 63-yard, 1:13 drive capped off by a Jones 21-yard scamper up the middle of the field That tied the game at 17 with 7:59 left in the first half Not to be outdone, Howe would answer back with a healthy clock chewing 53-yard drive that took nearly the entire rest of the second quarter A 1yard Matthews score gave Howe the 24-17 lead and left only :38 seconds on the clock for Muenster to work with They eventually would take a knee and go to the locker room
With Howe deferring to the second half and holding a touchdown lead, they had the opportunity to create some distance between the themselves and the Hornets Matthews wasted no time with a 52-yard run thanks in part to his quarterback Brandon Wall who got a tremendous downfield block to spring him Moments later, Grisham would take it over from the 6 yard line The Honaker PAT was good and the drive took 1:10 The Bulldogs looked to be in full command with two touchdown lead, 31-17 with 10:44 remaining in the third Muenster drove the length of the field on their next possession which started at their own 27 yard line, however the Black Plague stopped the Hornets dead in their tracks on a 4th and 1 at the Howe 9 yard line with 8:29 on the third quarter clock
Howe was forced to punt on their next possession and Muenster took the ball in great shape at the Howe 33 yard line to start the drive But costly mistakes by Hornets forced them to punt Howe would also punt on their next possession as the game seemed to turn into a defensive struggle for a few moments
Wall’s punt, however, would land near the home bleachers and Muenster’s next possession would start at the Howe 27 yard line Jones scored on another run, but a flag brought back the touchdown and Howe’s defense once again forced a turnover on downs at the Howe 18 yard line when Andrew Griffin and J P Queen made great defensive plays to turn back the Hornets on third and fourth down Howe again was forced to punt giving Muenster the ball at the Howe 46 yard line with only :50 left in the third quarter The Hornets faced with a 4th and 10 threw the ball in the end zone for McGrew, but he dropped the ball giving the Bulldogs defense another turnover on downs, their third of the contest Howe took the ball to start the fourth quarter at their own 23 yard line but were once again held to a punt The booming Wall punt set up Muenster at their own 15 yard line with 9:22 left in the game Jones steadily drove the Hornets down the field on an 85-yard drive that took 4:14 off the clock and was ended on a 14-yard McGrew touchdown run that closed the gap to 31-24 with 4:38 left in the game
The Bulldogs at that point would have been content with taking the remaining time off of the clock, but Grisham quickly went the distance with a 61-yard score to up the Howe lead to 37-24 Honaker’s PAT was blocked after a high snap
With 3:35 remaining in the game, McGrew would match Grisham’s run with a 65-yarder of his own to give the homecoming crowd a scare The new score was 37-31 with 2:44 left in the game Howe took the ball at midfield and eventually took the remaining time off of the clock to secure the hot rod homecoming evening
The Bulldogs will travel to Quinlan on Friday to take on the 4A, Division I team that currently sits at 2-1 on the season coming off of a 57-22 win over Venus on Friday night
