Howe's That

Dwyer is 2016 Homecoming Queen

It's always fun to be asked to come back and asked to be a part of the homecoming pep rally, but something strange has happened over the past few years. My old 42 jersey from high school that I dug out has now shrunk so much that when I put it on it was so tight that I felt awkward wearing it in public. Surely it has shrunken, right? I'm going with that. Some of you may have listened to the "Senior Spotlight" segment last Friday with Tyler Grisham and learned that he will be making a new video with sixth grader Jesse Portman. After last year's overwhelming success of recreating the Mean Joe Green Coca-Cola commercial, the two will be working together this week to make another video that will top the 2015 version. Rumor has it that Jesse will be quite the ladie's man in the new video. The Howe Area Chamber of Commerce is working to announce an Oct. 8 community pep rally and parade. The event is on a Saturday night and will be a Silver Spike theme due to the renewed rivalry game that week with Van Alstyne. The rivalry started in 1935 and continued annually until recently when the Georgetown development created a gap in school enrollment. Perhaps now we can call it Georgetown vs. Summit Hill. Okay, no. It is the time of year to throw out the subtle reminder that if you constantly see the need in yelling at referees and umpires at youth sports games, it may be time to self-analyze your rational or irrational instinctive behavior. Coaches try and remove from the athlete of blaming others. It doesn't help when they hear their own parents and fans do the very thing they're told is not acceptable behavior.

That message resonated well as the Bulldogs defeated one of the best football teams in North Texas in the 2nd ranked Class 2A, Division II Muenster Hornets and gave Howe a winning

record on the season at 2-1 and in the current decade at 35-34. It was the first ever meeting between the two schools and in game number 734 in Howe school history. The two high-powered offenses could not be more different, continued on page 2

In a STAAR galaxy of her own A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.... a fifth grade girl, now a sixth grader aced her STAAR test. Actually, it happened very recently and the galaxy is on Beatrice Street. Korie Bouse, who also is a Star Wars enthusiast, thanks in part to her father, became one of the very rare students to ever ace the STAAR test. The fifth grade portion of the test included reading, science and math. One would think that massive amounts of extra studying would be required in order to ace the state test, but Bouse indicated that it was no more than normal. "I just studied what the teachers asked me to."
