Howe's That Throughout this edition are a few essays that were selected as winners in a contest. They are placed here unedited as they were submitted. Congratulations to the Howe Middle School Students who were very successful in these essays.

Now that we have two official presidential candidates, it appears evident that both political parties feel that they'd have the election in the bag if they just nominated absolutely anyone else.

Furthermore, it may even be that the vice presidential candidates could team up with a Pence/Kaine or Kaine/Pence ticket and win in an absolute landslide.

The GOP convention was hijacked by the new Trumplican party and was chock full of non-traditional Republican conservative principles. Some GOP members referred to the RNC as "Really Not Conservative."

Howe Lions Club officially chartered, again It has been 16 years since the Howe Lions Club existed. Originally formed in 1974, the Howe Lions Club served the city as it's own civic organization for many years and did great things for Howe unitl participation eroded in 2000. But on Saturday night, Lions Clubs from all over North Texas found their way to the local American Legion where a charter party was held for the Howe Lions Club to once again form and serve the community.

Back to School Downtown Block Party this Saturday

The Democrat convention was void of any American flags. Apparently, they removed them and set them outside where they were burned, or "berned" by protesters in Philly.

If you didn't hear about the raucous acts outside of the convention, it's probably because of who was covering it. The party that wants to build bridges instead of walls, constructed a temporary fence to keep protesters out. If they jumped the convention fence, they were arrested. The game unpacks the bubble wrap and styrofoam peanuts from the young as if to hand them their first rifle, dress them in camo, put black under their eyes and help them to make that first kill shot.

It's the thought of the young boy becoming a young man.

Kids are playing the sport at more of a younger age than ever before and are accomplishing feats and suffering defeats while learning valuable life lessons. Winning isn't the end-all-be-all, but it sure beats losing - and they both equally teach about life. There is no "turning the scoreboard off" in life. Your failures are there for everyone to see. But the flip side of that is that; your accomplishments are also projected up high in lights.

The game teaches mental toughness more than physical toughness. It teaches that nothing good happens in individualism, but everything good happens when everyone rows in the same direction. Imagine ten young men rowing a boat down the river.

They all work together and they keep the boat floating straight and fast. If one person, however, decides to take a break, or even worse, row the wrong way - the boat does not operate as intended and if it stays straight, it is because others are overcompensating for the laziness or defiance of another.

requires all of our players to dress the same, with shirt tails tucked in and no individualized colored socks. We look the same and we play as one. That, to me, plays a big part in how we've been so successful and have won two championships in three years.

Superb athletes without training or discipline are just a bunch of impressive rowers doing what they want and getting nowhere. Superb athletes with discipline and training become something truly special.

Tom Landry once stated that a good coach requires athletes to do the things they don't want to do in order to achieve the things they want to achieve. That also filters into life. Kids on our team are required to run at the end of practice for a very long time at different paces. Just when they are exhausted and think that they are done and there's nothing left - they always find that there's a little bit more in the gas tank. We hope that mentality will spill over to when they are married or when they have a terrible week at work. There's always a little bit left to give.

Football, while it is a reckoning to individuals is a bounty for a platoon. The game brings communities together because of one name that shines bright on the front of the jersey. The spirit of team colors, mascots, cheerleaders, and all that comes with the strange fascination that we have with the warrior-spirited game pumps life into a community. Some towns even hang their hat on their football Our 5th and 6th grade team, led by team. Love it or hate it, America is Head Coach Michael Portman obsessed with football.

Dixie was founded soon after the Civil War. Thee was really no reason, they just founded the town really just to have a a place to live.

It used to be called Theodore until 1886 when it was changed to Dixie.

It had a post office in 1886-1902.

The town was still doing well, in 1908, they had established three churches, a gin, school, grist mill, and a store. It was in the Whitesboro school district in the 1940s, when the school closed down. The first school was a one room log building. I drove through Dixie and notice that one of the churches is still running and that great grandfather used to preach at one of the churches. I also notice there is a ranch on Highway 377 and that there is a barbeque place off of Dixie Road. I also notice many modern houses and that one of them had a good sized pond and many people drive through it and I've probably driven through it many times in my life but never noticed the amazing amount of history about the town. The town had a reported population of 50 in 1933, 25 in 1936 through 1990, and a insanely low population of 17 in 2000. I was amazed that a town could have this large of a history and that it was so close to where I live and that I didn't know about it.

There are many forgotten communities everywhere, including in the area north of Whitesboro. Some of these, in no particular order, are Pulloff, Cedar Mills, Red Branch, Rock Creek, Valley View, Delaware Bend, Mt. Zion, and Liberty. Some of these had a cemetery that is still used a little, but the community itself with a school and a store are now gone.

room. By reading community histories in books, I now know that families named Munger settled in the area near that school, which gave the school its name. However, the area cemetery still in use is called Mr. Tabor, and there never was a store as far as I know.

So the Munger School and the families name Munger comprised the forgotten community.

I have one picture of the Munger School group that I inherited from among keepsakes of my mother, the teacher. She walked to Munger school at least part of the time from our family A forgotten community that perhaps nobody remembers except me unless others living near farm where we now live and where we reared our four sons about two miles to the northwest 90, is Munger. “The Holy Spirit will show you what is true. The people of this world cannot accept Him, because they don’t see or know Him. But you do know the Holy Spirit, who is with you and He will be in you,” John 14:17.

When you are looking at black and white it’s easy to pick the white…it’s the gray you need discernment for. All Christians have the Holy Spirit living in them…but non believers do not. That’s why the world is deceived into thinking the gray is so wonderful. Deception starts with enough truth to bate and then becomes for from the truth for the trap. Pilots fly by instruments, not by sight. If the calculations are off by a fraction at take off it could be thousands of miles wrong before it’s corrected. All along the pilot believes he is leading the passengers to their desired destination when in reality it could be death or destruction or in the least far off course. God knows the path set before us and offers to direct our footsteps with the help of the Holy Spirit. The choice is yours. You can go it alone and take the journey with uncertainty, or you can take each step with confidence following the

Learn about antiques and collectibles with Dr. Georgia Caraway

Horton Ceramics, located in Eastland, Texas, was started in 1946 and operated until 1964 when the pottery was sold. Horace Horton made vases, console sets, candy boxes, and planters, many designed by his wife, Geraldine.

horny toad, “Old Rip.” This is where the two Eastland potteries’ stories come together. I called the House of Webster plant and talked with Jimmy, the plant manager.

He told me that Geri Horton made the first Rip and for more than 20 years Rip was given away as a souvenir to visitors and school children that toured the plant. But alas, the real Rip and the ceramic Rip are no more. According to a flyer written by the company, the story goes that when the Eastland Courthouse was built in 1897, Earnest Wood, a justice of the peace, placed a West Texas horned toad in the cornerstone.

Old Rip, along with a Bible and several other objects of interest, remained in the cornerstone until 1928. On February 28th of that year, a wrecking crew began to demolish the 31-year-old courthouse to make way for a new one. Three thousand people were on hand to witness the opening of the cornerstone. After Judge Ed S. Pritchard removed the Bible and the other objects, Eugene Day, a local oilman thrust his hand into the cavity of the cornerstone and lifted out the dust-covered toad,

“Old Rip.” As Day held up the little toad by his hind leg to show to the crowd, Rip’s other leg twitched.

Old Rip was alive . . . the crowd cheered and Old Rip awoke from a 31-year slumber. Old Rip was exhibited in various parts of the country including a visit to President Coolidge in Washington.

Old Rip died of pneumonia in January 19, 1929. His body was embalmed and can be seen today in his plush-lined casket in the lobby of the Eastland County Courthouse.

Old Rip finally earned his name.

Dr. Georgia Caraway, former director of the Denton County Museums for 14 years, and her friends opened the Howe Mercantile at 107 East Haning.

Her latest, North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, will be available at Howe Mercantile in August. She hopes her next book will be the history of Howe.

By Arturo Lowder, Howe Middle School A man by the name of J.L. Hughes saw a chance to create a business from the railroad system like man other towns did. In 1888 he built a merchandise store, built a post office and became the postmaster, he was even the priest on Sundays at the Old School Baptist Church.

He later named this small town Luella after his oldest daughter. In the early 1890s, Luella had a cotton gin, two general stores, a cotton and grain market, doctors office, drug store, blacksmith job, a government licensed distillery, and a saloon. By 1910 the doctors office, drugstore, distillery, and saloon were gone. In the later 30's

the post office was also gone. In the early fifties when the railroad quit running, Grayson County bought it right away and they made a road called Farm to Market Road 1281. In 1964, fifty of Luella's residents put in $50 respectively to make the Luella Water Supply District. Sherman also needed water for their industries. Sherman drilled some water test sites and rumors of gtting annexed sent panic waves across this community but all turned out well. With the courts approval Luella had its first election and by a vote of 89-10 Luella was officially a city. When roads needed repair Luella was nearly bankrupt so Luella went quietly to history.
