What we need is something to live on. Actually we wouldn't mind Uncle Sam's tax bite - if he didn't come back for dessert. Only two kinds of people complain about excessive taxes - men and women.

There has been a lot of disparaging comments regarding property tax hikes this week. No one wants to pay taxes that are deemed too high, but let us remember that this is a changing market. When property taxes go up, your money is paying to educate your children and protect your complaining gluteus.

Teachers experience workforce the first day because that was not an uplifting experience."

For the past two years, Howe's Economic Development office has sponsored two Howe teachers to participate in the Workforce Solution's Business Education for Teachers (BET) program. The program places the teachers in a workforce environment for one week to give them an idea of what the current workforce and workplace is like in the immediate community. The teachers are paid a $1,000 stipend for the week of summer vacation that they miss.

The reason for the BET is to the experience to translate to real-life knowledge for students in that particular teacher's classroom.

Last week, we recapped the week spent at Heritage Surgical Center

by Howe High School Science Teacher Josh Rollins. This week we will turn to Jackie Dawsey, Howe Middle School English teacher to share her experiences at the Precinct 2 Grayson County Commissioner's office.

After the first day of orientation, Dawsey was sent over to meet the Honorable Phyllis James, Commissioner of Precinct 3. With James being unavailable, they sent Dawsey to the county jail.

Dawsey said that she was being trained by one of her former students from Sherman ISD. "I tought her and now she's teaching me. It was really neat." said Dawsey.

She had an awakening moment when she saw the laundry room and realized that this was an entire community within itself. She also learned that the county has to store fingerprints for 75 years and everything is being transferred to digital record keeping. While in the digital age, she did learn that the entire top floor of the courthouse is filled with old jail cells filled with paper records. She was even shown the actual will of Wilson N. Jones and the birth certificate of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Day two, she went to the courthouse with Commissioner James and was introduced to the rest of the county commissioners and actually attended a commissioners' court meeting.

Upon conclusion, her and Commissioner James went across the street to witness a trial where a young man was being given punishment for a crime.

Howe (329 enrollment) will now join District 5-3A and will be paired with Whitesboro (454), Van Alstyne (446), Pottsboro (436), Pilot Point (433), and Callisburg (357). Now what do the differences in those numbers equate to? Van Alstyne's 117 high school enrollment advantage gives them roughly 60 more boys in high school. That's about 30 more junior and senior boys. Howe is 56-76 overall in games with their new district opponents.

The best success has been against Callisburg (8-3) and Whitesboro (8- 3). However, the 'Dogs are 1734 against Van Alstyne, 10-17 versus Pilot Point and 13-19 in games with Pottsboro.

The "Silver Spike" will be a remarkable evening this fall. Howe will travel to Van Alstyne in week nine to renew the age-old rivalry that dates back to 1941. In 2016, it is primarily for fans as these kids rarely have played the Panthers due to the different sizes in schools over the past several years. When Van Alstyne's Georgetown development took place ten years ago, the southern sister town had a major embarkation in population which disassociated the rivalry for years.

Now that Summit Hill is on the horizon, the renewal of the rivalry seems imminent for many generations to come.

Finishing third is not the team's goal, but it is a welcomed sight for fans. It's always a Bulldogapproved message when Texas Football predicts extra lighting on the northeast corner of the downtown 4-way stop.

WNV is spread primarily through the bite of an infected Culex mosquito. Culex mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. GCHD has not received any official reports concerning any human cases of WVN for 2016.

At this time, GCHD is not testing mosquito pools for the Zika virus.

Zika virus is spread primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, and possibly the Aedes albopictus mosquito. The mosquitoes become infected when they feed on a person already infected with the virus and can then spread the virus to others through bites. Therefore, it is recommend to test symptomatic humans, not mosquito pools, for Zika virus. However, it is

Dawsey also learned that the County Commissioner deals a lot with the people and that Commissioner James' philosophy is to go out and meet with the people one-one-one and find common ground to help in the needs and hopefully resolve the issues.

"She cares and if she can't fix something, you can tell that it bothers her." said Dawsey.

Later, she went on to the Precinct 1 Barn where she witnessed a meeting about adding tornado sirens. Dawsey experienced nearly everything one could see in county business, even sitting in a $1.5 million fire truck. But it was the emergency operations that really struck Dawsey's attention.

"Every emergency that could happen, they've thought of it and are prepared for it." said Dawsey. "I'm sort of into that kind of thing - being prepared. But I don't think about it on the level that she does."

On the last day of going through the program, Dawsey got to see the Grayson County workers placing a tin horn. She was informed by the county that they really want people to call them to place the tin horn because if it is done improperly, flooding could wash away the road. Therefore, the county will offer to correctly place the tin

horn for the cost of labor and materials.

Commissioner James also stresses the importance of replacing fleet vehicles and budgeting for maintenance on a rotation because the feasibility of replacing multimachinery in one year would not do well for budgeting purposes.

"I know there are people that think it's all a great conspiracy to spend every dollar that comes in, but I felt like they really were trying to think through things and make the taxpayers' money go as far as it can go." said Dawsey.

"There's only so much money and you have to have some for this (department) and this (department) and this (department).

Dawsey plans to take this educational week back to the classroom and pass along to her students what the county said they are looking for from the next wave of students.

Unfortunately for those that love to say they'll never use algebra and geometry, Dawsey says that if you want to be a good employee in the workforce, those skills will be needed.

"They said some of these kids can't come in here and write a coherent paragraph and communicate something." said Dawsey.

"Some of the bosses would say that they would just write it themselves because they couldn't deal with all of the mistakes that were made by the young people now. They just want to see that skill."

Dawsey also said that the students will need to know basic problem solving and basic coordination. Her biggest point of advice: "Learn how to interview for a job."

“And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness more than light, because their deeds were evil,” John 3:19.

Jesus is the Light of the world and Satan is the darkness. Jesus spent His ministry being loved and hated by many. He was loved by those who recognized Him as the Messiah and hated because He revealed the evilness of the world’s value system and works. Those that violated God’s laws and loved the darkness didn’t want their evil hearts or deeds exposed. Today’s darkness is as great as the evil in Noah’s time.

God will judge those who call evil good. “How horrible it will be for those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness into light and light into darkness, who turn what is bitter into something sweet and what is sweet into something bitter,” Isaiah 5:20. Today the “church”, those that confess Jesus to be their Lord, refuse to make His ways the truth they make decisions by. We are divided, not by brick but by hearts that decipher what is the truth, or not true in God’s Word by how they want to believe. The church has embraced the darkness in the world and called it doctrine. As the world got darker the church became politically correct so no person would be offended by the Light. The darkness slowly deceived lukewarm believers of Jesus. Divorce, cohabitation, corruption, foul language, alcoholism, abuse, selfishness, pride… the church looks, sounds and acts like the

A few weeks ago we looked at some definitions for furniture “legs.” Today we will explore the wonderful world of furniture feet.

A foot is the lower extremity of a leg; or the lowest, usually projecting, part of a legless piece of furniture, serving as a support.

There are a variety of styles of feet: Ball and claw (also called clawand-ball): carved foot in the form of the claw of an animal or bird holding a ball, the ball resting on the floor. Fashionable in the 18th C. and most frequently used to terminate a cabriole leg.

Bear’s-claw foot: carved paw foot in which the paw is a bear’s.

Lady Bulldogs volleyball camp

Lady Bulldogs' senior Mati Abner.

Ed Garza, head volleyball coach at Austin College held a camp at Howe High School to instruct the Howe youth on the fundamentals of the game. It was also a chance for him to recruit players and he made no hesitation that he liked what he saw from Mati Abner and said he wanted her to play for him. He was also highly interested in Kayla Anderson but learned she's already committed to Midwestern State University to play softball. Garza, a 21-year AC coach previously had Howe players in Kaelyn Cook and Shannon Cornelieson.

Garza, who has held this camp before in Howe says this is the largest turnout that he's had in

Lady Bulldog country.

"We had a lot of younger girls in the camp so I'm making it more diverse." said Garza.

Howe Head Coach Jordan Dusek says that she was impressed with the amount of middle school girls that came out to camp.

Dusek is optimistic about the upcoming season due to being stockpiled with 10 to 11 seniors for her varsity squad this fall.

Two-a-days will start Aug. 1 from 7:30 am - 9:30 am and 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. The first game is Aug. 9 at home vs. Tom Bean at 5:30 pm with a three-game set.

Fulenchek has great outing

Howe's Garrett Fulenchek went three strong innings on Sunday, July 3.
