Volume #54, Edition #7

Howe's That Special edition by Monte Walker When I turned 10-years-old, my dad took me on a father/son trip to Padre Island making stops occasionally in really cool places in Texas. I remember that trip vividly because I thought it was really cool to travel with my old man - just me and him - the first guy trip that made me feel grown. So when it came time for my boy to turn 10, it seemed fitting to take a guy trip and maybe he would have the same solid memories of his old man that I have of mine. We didn't travel to Padre though, we took a bite of the Big Apple...which may in turn have taken a bite of us. We left early Tuesday and the main idea of the trip was to see our beloved Texas Rangers play at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. But before that, we were able to do some sightseeing as we took in Times Square as our hotel was at the Crowne Plaza right there near where the ball drops on New Year's Eve. One of the first things we did was purchase a 7-day pass for unlimited rides on the subway. We rode up near 55th Street where we split the famous HUGE corned beef sandwich at Carnegie Deli. We then took in the "Top of the Rock" at the Rockefeller Plaza, and St. Patrick's Cathedral before heading back to headquarters and going to the Hershey's chocolate heaven store. We got a few hours of rest because, 1. He's 10 and 2., we had reservations to be on NBC's Today Show on Wednesday morning. That morning, we stood in line for only a few moments and made our signs and stood along the rail awaiting our chance to be on national television (in which we did get on). My son Mahlon even got to shake hands with Al Roker. continued on page 6

Howe Community Library Director Becky Hogenson Retires by Gay Brennan It is not unusual to enter the library in Howe during a weekday morning and hear an animated voice, acting as several different characters, speaking in various accents. “Aggle flaggle klabble!” “As soon as Trixie's mommy opened the door, she asked, 'Where's Knuffle Bunny?'”

If a person was new to Howe, one might think it was a group practicing for a play, but those of us who frequent the library know that our beloved “Library Lady” extraordinaire, Becky Hogenson, is reading a book to school children. Since 2006, the Howe Community Library has become known to locals as a hang out spot, mostly due to the welcoming

Becky Hogenson atmosphere that the supremely talented Hogenson, Library Director, has created. In May, much to the dismay of many citizens, she announced to the Howe ISD School Board, that she would continued on page 3
