'Holliday' classic tonight in Denton

Howe's That On this Presidents' Day, we salute those great men who have led our country to being the greatest nation in the history of earth as we know it. Which makes me wonder who will be the next one after Barack Hussein Obama II. Much will be said this week when South Carolina speaks. And as the Republican candidates travel through the Bible Belt/SEC/NASCAR areas, the contenders from the pretenders will start to phase separate just as gasoline and water.

The debate on Saturday night was more of a demolition derby and one would only hope that our country can have a leader that can unite this country that is so torn at the seams on nearly every issue.

Being in the news business, lets take a look at who has the most newspaper endorsements to this point:

The Lady Bulldogs (23-7, 12-2) wrapped up district play and the regular season on Tuesday night with a dominating 50-37 win over Whitesboro and will enter the playoffs starting tonight as the number two seed from District 10-3A behind only Pottsboro. The Lady Bulldogs will be seeking their fourth consecutive bidistrict championship and their opponent tonight will be the Holliday Lady Eagles at Denton High School tonight at 6 pm. After 20 years of service to Grayson County, Sheriff J. Keith Gary is planning to retire at the spry young age of 80. With his fifth term ending in December and the election approaching for a new Sheriff, we look back at the career of this former Howe resident.

For the record, Kasich would have 15 if they counted the little Enterprise from Howe.

Gary was born in Laredo, when he was 12, moved to San Antonio and is proud to be the third generation in his family who is fluent in Spanish. He

started college as a music major at St. Mary's, played tuba, baritone in the band and thought he would be the state's best band director. He transferred into Sam Houston State where he met his wife, Uva and got serious about getting married. After a year, he decided that if his wife was going to be a teacher, then he ought to have a job in a different profession.

As a student at Lamar University, Gary was required to take a speech class, chose the topic "The Need for a Republican Party in Jefferson County" and interviewed the Republican Party chair in Jefferson County to get information. Years later, he went to a meeting of the Republican party, which was in its infancy in Texas, at the time, and a lawyer approached him. The Northern part of the district (Tyler) had gotten the appointment for U.S. attorney, so the southern part of the district wanted to have a person from Beaumont or Port Arthur appointed as Marshal. He asked the lawyer, "You're really serious?" and the man replied, "Oh yes!"

At the library in Beaumont, all he could find about Federal Marshals, was a breakdown of the Departent of Justice from a few government textbooks. In the 1960's, a Marshal was an administrator with a group of deputies to direct.

The win clinched a playoff spot for the Bulldogs for the second year in a row under Head Coach Tim Short. Howe was one point away from having all starters in double digits. Levi Mrozinski and Nick Wilson each scored 16. Sam Akins scored 10 while Michael

Kehrer scored nine.

On Friday, Howe lost at Pilot Point, 48-29. The Bearcats are second in the district behind Ponder who ir ranked second in Class 3A. The Bulldogs will wrap up the regular season at home with a game against Gunter.

Q. I have never been to an auction before, and quite frankly, I am a little nervous about going to one. What if I scratch my nose and the auctioneer thinks I am bidding?

Why do some auctioneers called themselves “Colonel?”

A. Auctions can be great fun and possibly a chance to save money on antiques and collectibles. If you don’t know the rules, however, auctions can be a little hazardous to your pocketbook. “Caveat emptor” –let the buyer beware—is the general rule. If you don’t watch what you are doing, in the heat of competition and the spell cast by the auctioneer’s chant, you might spend more than you anticipated.

Let’s look at a few definitions and auctioneering concepts you should know before you bid.

• “Preview time” provides an opportunity for you to inspect the merchandise. You should look for chips, cracks, repairs, missing parts, tears, marriages (when two pieces did not start out life together), and other things wrong with the items which may factor into how much you would be willing to pay or whether or not you might bid on the item.

• “As is, where is” means there are no guarantees on the condition of the item. Auctioneers usually try to point out flaws in an item, but you must look the item over and be sure that it meets your condition criteria.

• A “lot” is a unit of sale, whether it is a set of china or one plate. Listen carefully to the auctioneer. He will say “buy the whole lot for one money” or “your choice” where you choose as many items as you want at the individual price bid or “times the money” where if there are 5 items for sale as a lot each item costs the individual price bid.

• Hammer price is the final bid. It does not include buyer’s premium

or sales tax.

• “Buyer’s premium” is a set percentage that is added on to the hammer price.

Some rules that make auctioneering non-hazardous: • Plan to arrive early to inspect the merchandise for sale. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of the auctioneer or his help. You won’t get a chance during the auction.

• Decide ahead of time how much you want to bid on an item and stick to it. Don’t catch auction fever.

• Read the fine print in the catalog for auction rules about buyer’s premium, sales tax and removal of objects you bid on and won.

• Make your bidding gesture clear. Use your bid card, raise it high in the air and if you must call out. The auctioneer’s help will make eye contact with you and encourage you to continue bidding.

Don’t wave at friends or make overt motions with your bid card.

• Pay close attention to the auctioneer. At first you may not be able to follow where the bid is, but you soon will get used to his chant and be able to follow along.

The curious use of the title “colonel” for an auctioneer originated during the Civil War. It was customary for army colonels to hold public auctions to sell off the spoils of war that their troops had seized. Thus, colonel and auctioneer became synonymous to the public in some regions. I have not heard any of the auctioneers around our area called colonel.

Auctions are a great night’s entertainment and doesn’t have to cost you anything—just don’t sneeze!

Dr. Georgia Caraway, former director of the Denton County Museums for 14 years, and her friends opened the Howe Mercantile at 107 East Haning.

Store hours are Thursday through Saturday noon until 8 p.m. She has written four Denton history books and has finished a 5th history about the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo that will be published in August. She hopes her next book will be the history of Howe.

Gifted and Talented News - 2016 Howe ISD Spring GT (Gifted and Talented) Nomination Window will be February 22 – March 4 at noon.

Students in kindergarten and second grade are automatically screened each year.

Nomination packets will be available beginning February 22, 2016 from the Howe Elementary and the Middle School campus offices.

Howe ISD's GT program serves students in the areas of language arts, math, science and social studies. It requires that a child be creative and original in expression, task committed, and willing and able to use higher-level thinking skills.

Parents and teachers of students in grades 1st, 3rd, 4th, at Howe Elementary and 5th – 7th at Howe Middle School, who wish to nominate their child/student to be screened for possible placement in the Howe ISD GT Program for the 2016-2017 school year may pick up a nomination packet from their campus office.

One year ago, Major League Baseball's #66 pick and Howe's own Garrett Fulenchek made his first appearance on the hill at Howe's Bulldog Baseball Stadium. While he was wild in his one inning of work, fans got to see what a professional hometown athlete looked like from close up. Then freshman David Crees will probably remember the game more unfavorably than anyone else due to being drilled in the back by a Fulenchek 90 mph fastball.

TC Carroll was born in Crush, Texas, the son of Garlon and Edith Carroll. He graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

He was employed for 36 years with Texas Instruments before retiring in 1991. He is also a retired pastor of Merriman Hills Baptist Church where he preached for 18 years.

The Carrolls have two sons, one son-in-law and one daughter and two daughters-in-law, Tony and Susan Carroll of Bells, Texas, Dana and Bob Orr of Allen, Texas and Shawn and Sharon Carroll of Howe, Texas. They also have six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Texas History Minute: Dale Evans her connections while working for a local insurance company, she landed singing roles at two local radio stations by 1930, WMC and WREC.

Dr. Ken Bridges Dale Evans spent decades as a star of the silver screen. While her career was legendary in its own right, her story behind the scenes was even more remarkable.

She moved to Chicago to try to find better employment, but her health collapsed under the strain of work, school, and raising her son. After she recovered, she found work at station WHAS in Louisville, Kentucky, where the station manager suggested her stage name, Dale Evans. By 1936, she found her way back to Texas and found work singing on Dallas radio station WFAA.

Her career gradually ascended. In 1942, she appeared briefly in the film Orchestra Wives, her first of She was born Frances Octavia Smith what became 44 films.
