I just purchased a book by Geoffrey

A Godden entitled “New Handbook of British Pottery & Porcelain Marks.” This is the second edition, revised and enlarged in 1999 by Random House, London Godden sets out some “rules” for dating ceramic marks that I think are worth passing along.

Marks incorporating the name of a pattern will be post-1830, or later

Marks incorporating the diamond-shaped design registration device will be between 1842 and 1883.

“Garter-type” marks incorporating the maker’s name or initials were popular from about 1840

Marks incorporating the word “Royal” tend to postdate about 1850.

Marks incorporating the words “Trade Mark” must postdate the 1862 Trade Mark Act

The addition of the word “England” in a mark indicates a date after 1880, and in general after 1891 when the American Tariff Act came into force

The abbreviation of “UK” or “United Kingdom” is usually only found on recent productions

Printed marks incorporating the Royal Arms supported by the lion and the unicorn are of the 19th or 20th century date g the description

Bone China tend to postdate the 1920s

Marks with wording relating that items are dishwasher and microwave safe are of a recent period.

Marks incorporating the letter “R” in a small circle postdate 1955

These “Godden” rules relate to the age of a piece, but Godden reminds us “that age in itself is not a virtue Do not worship age alone.”

I am not too sure about Geoffrey’s admonition After I turned 65 and found out that I was firmly escounced in the category of an antique in some collecting fields, I began to think that revering age might not be such a bad thing.
