I was a fat kid

“I like ALL sports,” I announced proudly “Well then you, Mr Campbell, will be my classroom sports reporter You may talk about TCU, the Cowboys, the Rangers, or whichever sport you would like to talk about.”

And if that were the only ailment I suffered from, the first grade would have gotten off to a much easier start. But in addition to my size, I was also blessed with a pair of “buck-teeth” that would cause a beaver colony to erect a statue of me Add to that a horrible, uneven, chili-bowl haircut (courtesy of my sweet mother), and I became the easiest target to ever roam the halls of Westcliff Elementary School in Fort Worth

I was tormented DAILY. There was no ‘fat joke’ I hadn’t heard. I hated being the center of attention…which is why I loathed Friday mornings Because that was

SHOW AND TELL!

Fortunately, my teacher – Nell Meyers – was a veteran teacher with keen senses so one Friday early in the school year she asked me to stay after class to visit with her.

“You don’t like show-and-tell, do you,” she asked I shook my head “Well, what DO you like?

I had on my favorite TCU Horned Frog shirt that day, so she asked, “Sports? Do you like TCU sports?"

I was beaming by the time I got into my mother’s car I couldn’t wait for the next Friday when I could break down the previous week’s football games TCU was horrible, but I was the eternal optimist and would always talk about how they were on the brink of something great (NEVER happened!). When baseball season rolled around I would review the Rangers performance for the week I even read hockey box scores to make sure I could speak somewhat intelligently about my adopted favorite team – the Boston Bruins Granted, there weren’t a whole lot of kids too terribly interested in what I had to say. They would doodle, yawn, or even throw stuff at me. But at the end of each presentation Mrs Meyers would always react as though President Ford himself had just delivered the day’s news to her that was even more last week,” she wo She drew a sad, ins his shell and gave h gift – the gift of co Today, some of yo child to their first d Others of us have b routine more times count But all of us in common – that s comes from hoping that our children ar sort of intellectual they will need to su And in each classro
