Season 72 starts at Bulldog Stadium Friday night

by Monte Walker And the day has come for us parents of school-age kids to drop them off and run like crazy. The kindergarten parents will be easy to find.

They'll be the ones crying and driving the wrong way on Roberts Street. For the rest of us seasoned veterans, we'll be crying in our own vehicles on our way to work clearly out of the way of the road hazard newbies.

It is a new school year and that brings excitement as well as the realization that our kids won't always be the cute little pumpkins that we want them to stay. They grow and mature and we entrust them to the administration and teachers at our beloved Howe ISD. I went to Meet the Teacher night while our fourth grader was out of town on vacation. When I told him that his teacher was really nice and that I really liked her. His response was, "That's what those teachers do. They try to be real nice to the parents." As if, when the Meet the Teacher doors close, the evil grins and whips come out. I guess that's the typical kid. I hope anyway.

Our seventh grader, however, is ready to see his friends, but is upset that his girlfriend is in only one class with him.

Council remains progressive with zoning change The Howe City Council waged war on apathy over the past few years when it comes to being businessfriendly and open for commerce. That attitude was soundly reinforced on Tuesday night at the monthly city council meeting.

Howe's secret weapon Porch has impacted the lives of 150 local families by providing free back to school clothes, shoes and accessories to those who need them. Without Linda’s hard work and dedication, this would not have been possible.

After her husband passed away, Linda says she “felt lost and needed something to do.” Peggy Richardson, a Howe resident from 2000-2013 for whom Peggy’s Porch is named, meant a lot to Linda before her passing in 2013. She says that “she loved her dearly and Peggy was such a special friend to her.” When Linda works at Peggy’s Porch, she says that it is calming and relaxing to her and that she feels God’s presence and Peggy’s presence around her. She says that she was drawn to this ministry to her community because of the positive impact it has on her life…as well as the positive impact it has on the lives of others.

Linda Wall, resident of Howe for 45 years, is no stranger to “giving back” to her community. As one of the original members of the Howe Band Boosters, a longtime PTA member, a Library Board member for two decades, a member of the Howe Historical Society and an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Linda has not only raised three children in this town, but she has made it a better place for all who call Howe “home.”

When asked about the ministry of Peggy’s Porch to our neighbors, she said that two stories came to mind. She tells of one day when an older woman and her 40-year old daughter stopped by.

They appeared to be ashamed to come in…but they needed clothing. The daughter asked Linda, “Can I give you a hug?” She put her head on Linda’s shoulder and said, “You don’t know how much this means to me; these are the first new clothes I have had in three years!”

As one who considers Howe to be an integral part of who she is, she is always looking for ways to help others. Jackie Patton, founder of Peggy’s Porch interdenominational clothes closet here in Howe, calls Linda her “secret weapon.” Over the past few weeks, Peggy’s

On another occasion, a mother with three daughters and one son came in. They offered assistance to the son and he told them what size jeans he needed. When they located his size, he was overheard saying to his mom, “Now I have two pair of jeans so you don’t have to wash my

jeans every night.”

Making a difference. That’s Linda. Her dedication and hours of tireless labor sorting, folding, stacking arranging and storing clothes day after day truly makes a difference for the residents of our community. But, Linda does not like the spotlight. She points to people like Norma Wallace and Peggy Richardson and so many others whom she admires…who have done…or would have done…what she is doing.

When given the opportunity, she selflessly focuses on the needs of Peggy’s Porch and the needs of our community. She tells us that donations of gently-worn or new clothes, shoes, accessories and athletic wear are always welcome; however, the building has some repair needs and regular volunteers are needed.

She would like to have enough volunteers for Peggy’s Porch to be open every Saturday and one afternoon during the week.

What would Linda say to a potential Peggy’s Porch volunteer? “It can be hard work, but it is so rewarding and fun. You get to meet new people and see people you have not seen in awhile. You will feel really good once you have been up there spending time and helping others.” She concludes, “Peggy’s Porch is an awesome place—it makes a difference for those who volunteer…and for those who are blessed by free clothes and by God’s mercy and love.”

Peggy’s Porch has been the beneficiary of the generosity of the City of Howe and has partnered with many churches in our community, Howe ISD, the Chamber of Commerce, the Boy Scouts and many local continued on Page #14

Church getting face-lift

to make it a priority to love God and His people more than you love what money can buy you. Don’t let money be a god. "You shall have no other gods before me,” Exodus 20:3. It’s ok to let money work for you…just be careful not to be bought.

Jesus is warning that it is impossible for anyone to be saved on their own merits. It was commonly taught by the rabbis that rich people were blessed by God and were the most likely candidates for Heaven. Jesus destroyed that theory and the idea that anyone can earn eternal life.

This verse is talking about giving to get praise, recognition and admiration. It’s good to give without receiving a ticker tape parade. Oh, it’s easier to keep secret with a small amount of money given but try giving without the recognition with a large amount of money. Your flesh wants to be celebrated even if it’s by one person. God always knows your intent. "When you do good deeds, don’t try to show off.

If you do, you won’t get a reward from your Father in Heaven.

When you give to charity, don’t blow a loud horn so others will know. That’s what show-offs do in the meeting places and on the street corners, because they are always looking for praise. I can assure you they already got the only reward they deserve,” Matthew 6:1-2.

"For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them," Ephesians 2:9-10. The Bible says the works we do on earth determine our rewards in Heaven. God is keeping an account of what we are doing on earth. Christians who love the praise of God more than the praise of man on earth will receive great reward in Heaven. The choices you are making presently will have eternal consequences attached to them. God sees everything based on the motivations of your heart. Some people do good things to be seen by other people. They like the praise of man. These people have

no reward in Heaven because they get their reward from the praise of man. When you do good works to obey and honor the Lord He will reward you. I pray blessings for over you and pray that with your financial gain you do great things to help others and bring honor and glory to the Lord. There will be poor and rich and everything in between when we get to Heaven. The common denominator will be that Jesus is our Lord and Savior.

“Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give it all to the poor, and you will have treasure in Heaven. Then come and follow Me.’ When the young man heard this he went away grieving because he was very rich,” Mathew 19:21-22. Thus it’s harder for a rich person to get into Heaven than a camel in the eye of the needle. “Better is a little with righteousness than great income with injustice,” Proverbs 16:8. Howe Police Sergeant Michael Hill said that a UPS delivery truck driver was making his normal route when he was rear-ended by a silver car. Hill stated that the driver of the silver car was okay, but the UPS driver complained of injury and was taken to a local hospital. Hill said that he wasn’t sure whether it was related to distracted driving, but a full investigation will be handled by Officer David Morris.

Howe Police Chief Carl Hudman reported that in the month of July the department answered 216 calls for service, made six felony arrests, 17 misdemeanor arrests, generated 31 work-orders, investigated four accidents and issued 109 citations. He reported one on-the-job injury with a new officer that cut his hand removing debris. He was back to work within the week.

Hudman also reported that they had one use-of-force incident with Officer Robert Todd attempting to arrest a suspect who resisted. Tom Bean PD arrived to assist and the suspect ended up being tased. No medical attention was required for suspect or any officer.

Public Works Director David Wortham reported 62 work orders in July. They had eight leaks and picked up two dogs.

Monte Walker, president of Howe Development Alliance told the council that the owner of 303 E. Haning St. has a potential lessee and are close to finalizing a deal. A hopeful date of opening is now thought to be around November 1.

Walker stated that there were some big players interested in this market, but couldn't devulge any information on those situations.

For the fifth consecutive year, Howe ISD held a community pep rally at Bulldog Stadium and just about anyone and everyone that calls themselves Howe Bulldogs in the fall sports were recognized.

Goodnight College opened in 1898 originally as a co-ed preparatory school. The institution opened its first classes in the local Methodist church, and Goodnight donated 340 acres to let students work off their tuition. Although it eventually expanded into a two-year college, the pressures of World War I and competition from other nearby colleges forced its closure in 1917.

The site, however, continued to operate briefly as an orphanage.

His later years were met with diappointment. His wife of 56 years, Mary Ann, died in 1926, leaving him totally despondent.

When the Mexican government, upset over the loss of its mining wealth to other nations, took over ownership of all foreign-owned mines in 1919, Goodnight saw all of his investments in Mexican silver mining evaporate overnight.

He was forced to sell his ranch, only with the provision that he could live there for the rest of his life. He died quietly at his home in 1929.

In the years following his death, Goodnight was widely honored.

Several Texas communities named streets for him, and Pueblo, Colorado, named an elementary school for him. The PanhandlePlains Historical Museum in Canyon, which opened in 1933, includes a statue, his personal letters, and a number of his possessions.
