Howe's Summit Salsa gets spicy news from Kroger

by Monte Walker Each week it seems I visit with someone who has a direct impact on my career as EDC Director here in our fair burg. When I visited with Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams this week about an article on a small hometown boy becoming a big city mayor, there were conversations that led off of his childhood memories in Howe and more on tax increment financing zones and covert land purchases with mega millions involved. I'm hoping one day to visit with Jeff in person to try and cram his vast experience in the business recruiting efforts and maybe a fraction can rub off and it can help me help both of our hometowns get a kick start on the population boom heading north. I am having a hard time not publishing what I know about a certain deteriorating church that has gathered a lot of media attention over the past few months. There is a meeting on Tuesday night that will affect the old building greatly and by next week's publication, you'll probably know mostly about it. A leap of faith, blind luck and a craving for salsa, Darrin Savage and his family have gone from making a batch of salsa just for kicks to finding out that their sweet peppered surprise will soon be on the shelves at 144 Kroger locations in Texas and Louisiana.

turned out really good. After eating it at their house, they decided to take it to a church luncheon where they attend at the Howe Church of Christ. He and wife Amber didn't say anything to anybody about the salsa at the Mexican food luncheon. It wasn't long before everyone started talking about it and wondering where it came from.

Back in the summer of 2011, Savage having never made salsa before started "I was shocked because I didn't know what I throwing around some recipe ideas and was doing. It was just luck." said Savage. made a batch that he says that accidentally continued on Page #4
