by Monte Walker While researching for the article on the 30-year anniversary of The School Zone Academy and looking at the May 23, 1985 edition of The Howe Enterprise, I noticed that the then Howe Chamber of Commerce had just reformed and one of the first things they did was to honor some longtime Howe business leaders as well as cut a ribbon for a new business. Honored were the first Citizens of the Year, which were Marshall Robertson, James Chisum, G.T. "Mack" McDonough, Price Hanning and Mamie Gee. The more things change the more they stay the same. The newly reformed Howe Area Chamber of Commerce recently honored critical leaders of the community and held a ribbon cutting for a new business.

Lady Bulldogs reach new heights It's moments like these that capture the heart of a community. A team whose foundation, in which, is built by a load of freshman and sophomores and a coach willing to stand up for his team during the biggest moments. The Howe Lady Bulldogs advanced to the fourth round for the first time in school history after a three-game series vs. the Brock Lady Eagles, who have recently had their number in a variety of sports.

That was until 'Shotgun Saturday' when the girls, whose theme is 'on the hunt,' shot down the Eagles and now turn their focus on longtime foes, the Whitewright Lady Tigers.

One person wondered why the grand opening of Howe Mercantile was getting so much more attention than the others. Renfro running for County Commissioner Local farmer Scott Renfro has thrown his cowboy hat into the ring for the seat of Grayson County Commissioner, Precinct 1. The county is currently being served in that role

Renfro has served eight consecutive years on the Howe ISD Board of Trustees and is currently the vice president of the board.

"As a farmer, I pretty well cover most of the area that the precinct holds in store." said Renfro. "I just felt the timing was right to get in there. I've had a lot of folks to push me in this direction and I feel like what is coming at us on the south end of the county, I want to have things in place for the growth that's coming."

Much has changed in the daycare business since 1985. Back then, the only people to answer to were Daycare Licensing and the Health Department. Now, Child Care Services, and the Federal Food Program have been put in place for standards. The big changes are having to have more staff due to ratios, educated staffs and a traceable food record.

“When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistines country, although it was shorter. For God said, If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt," Exodus 13:17.

God uses delays to prepare us.

The Israelites were a slave people and God knew if they went to war they wouldn't be able to handle it.

Every dream has difficulties. God uses delays to get us ready for those difficult times that we’re going to face during the course of our journey. The delays are designed to strengthen our faith and make us stronger. Deut. 8:2, "God led you through the wilderness for forty years... testing you to find out how you would respond and if you would obey Him." God uses delays to reveil how we will respond under pressure and to test our loyalty and obedience to Him. He uses delays to train us because sometimes it takes longer to get Egypt out of us than it does to get us out of Egypt.

When we got saved those thought patterns and habits came with us.

God uses the delays to break those habits and thought patterns and train you in His way of thinking and doing things. Be patient and let God do His work in your life while you do your part of being obedient. He will lead you through the wilderness but it’s your response that determines how long you stay there. You can stay three days or 40 years. God gives us free will to be as stuburn as we like.

Numerous awards and scholarships handed out at band banquet Madeline Ansley, Justin Taylor, Caleb Hough, Jackson Dunavant and Tiffany Lallier. Band Beau and Band Sweetheart were named Colton Sanford and Madeline Ansley. Most Spirited Boy and Most Spirited Girl went to Jackson Dunavant and Regan Gonzalez. Outstanding Band Member Award was awarded to Regan Gonzalez, while Outstanding Woodwind Award went to Kaylee Dwyer. Airianna Smith took home the Outstanding Brass Award while Dustin Woody was named Outstanding Percussion Award.

Rookie of the Year went to ​Greg Snider.

Scholarship recipients L-R: Madeline Ansley, Justin Taylor, Caleb Hough, Jackson Dunavant and Tiffany Lallier The Howe High School Band had their banquet on Tuesday night and celebrated the 40th year of the band program in style by handing out numerous awards. On display were all of the band uniforms throughout the years along with some of the color guard uniforms. Scrapbooks and various photos of the history of the program were on display.

Band Director Angie Liss said that the banquet is a special time for her.

"We recognize each senior individually where we tell each of their accomplishments and

Learn about your antiques and collectibles with Georgia Caraway

Sue Davis, Wills Point author and the late Bill McFarling, photographer of “The Picture Book of Vaseline Glass,” have compiled the definitive book on this glorious glassware.

According to Sue, no. In its molten state, the glass does pose a danger to the glass blowers, but once it becomes solid, it poses no danger.

Vaseline glass has a greenish-yellow color that is produced by the addition of uranium oxide to the batch. It has been called yellow-green glass, uranium glass, canary, topaz, yellow glass, lemon glass, pearlene-type fancy glass and lustered pea-spotted glass. It received the nickname “Vaseline” in the 1950s due to its resemblance to the yellow color of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly.

A few of the glassware manufacturers who produced this special ware are: Boston and Sandwich, Brockunier, Duncan, Heisey, Hobbs, U.S. Glass, Westmoreland, Fostoria, Imperial, Millersburg, Pairpoint, and Fenton Art Glass. Boyd, Degenhart, Gibson, Mosser, Summit, Viking, Wheaton, and L.G. Wright are making reproductions. Since all the L.G. Wright molds have recently sold at auction, it is possible that Castle, Fenton and AA Importing will begin using some of the old molds to produce more reproduction Vaseline.

During the height of its popularity, between the 1890s and the 1940s, decorative and functional forms of every imaginable design were created.

It is still being made, mainly as novelty and ornamental wares.

One distinguishing characteristic that makes Vaseline so interesting is that it will fluoresce when exposed to the ultraviolet light of a black light. However, Vaseline is not the only glass that will fluoresce under black light—custard glass and a clear green-colored glass produced in the late 1920s and early 1930s also glow under this light.

Cheerleaders signups Cheer signups will be Wednesday, May 20 from 3:30-5:30, at Athletic Cheer Force, 210 S. Collins Frwy in Howe. Anyone that is either new to cheer or is is moving to a new age group, or just needs a new uniform will need to be measured at signups. Please bring your child for measurements. Flyers will be left at the elementary for the kids to grab but will not be sent home in their folder.

Howe color guard announced Color Guard tryouts were held Thursday and the girls went through a similar evaluation as the drum major in the band. An outside judge is hired to qualify their flagwork and performance. Captains are chosen through a combination of experience on the line, interview, and tryout score. The 2015-16 Color guard members are: Ashlyn Ellis, Captain, Natalie Honore, Assistant Captain, Addy Pecina, Ashley Pelt, Erin Ansley, Abby Morrow, Natalie Sloan, Kaycie Taylor

Chamber welcomes newest business to town - Howe Mercantile On Friday, the Howe Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed the newest business to town, Howe Mercantile, which is located at 107 E. Haning St. in downtown Howe. Owner Georgia Caraway brought several of her friends from Denton where she resides and has been active in the community for many years.

Howe Mercantile carries luxury antiques and vintage clothing in the two units 107 and 109.

She will have several partners working the store with her during their operating days of Thursdays through Saturdays.

It was the first Howe Area Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting ceremony other than their own. With the growing community of Howe, it appears that more of these events are sure to be taking place.

On-hand were Howe Mayor Jeff Stanley, Howe City Council Member Debbie Lowery, Grayson County Commissioner Jeff Whitmire and Howe Development Alliance Director Monte Walker.

Doty named Drum Major
