Howe's That Homecoming is this week so be prepared for decorations and festivities surrounding the town and school. It will be a fun week as Coach Jim Fryar will be in town on Friday to celebrate the 25year anniversary of the 1989 District, Bi-District and Area Champions.

There are two jobs that every sports fan can do better than the person doing it. It's the play-caller in football and the manager in baseball. Both of those are so easily secondguessed and the second guesser would have always made the "right" call.

101 E. Haning St. is the site of lots of my sweat. Since making the purchase of the historic building, I've knocked 90% of the stucco off of the walls and exposed the original 1898 bricks and original high ceiling. Bids are being collected to upgrade the air-conditioning, bring down the old bead-board ceiling and replace it with corrugated tin.

Bulldogs win 44-16; Hawthorne has four touchdowns Bulldog Stadium, now 79 years old and the oldest active stadium anywhere around, opened her doors Friday night and displayed the remarkable face-lift she received in the off-season. But even as impressive as she was, it was the play on the field that had the most dramatic face-lift since the team last stepped on the field last season.

The Tigers would keep extending the next drive on key conversions and they capped off the 60 yard drive with a 14 yard touchdown pass from Reeves to Endries. Reeves also hit Zachary Fuesche for the two point conversion to cut the Howe lead to 14-8 just inside of the second quarter.

Continued on Page #4 submitted by Mike Stephens Saturday, the Bulldogs 1st and 2nd grade team was host to the Callisburg Wildcats and took home a 26-0 win. After holding the Cougars on the first series, The Bulldogs unleashed running back Braden Ulmer around the end for a 40 yard touchdown. The Bulldogs quarterback Beau Stephens would carry the ball on the bootleg for the

conversion to put the Bulldogs up 8-0 that they would carry to halftime. The defense was exceptional in the second half led by Aris Fox, recently moved to nose guard, where he had five sacks and set the the offense up to score three more times. The Bulldogs (2-1) will travel to Leonard this week to battle the Tigers of Blue Ridge.

After a night of heavy drinking, the man apparently showed up for work drunk and passed out on the hood of his vehicle.

by Debbie Wallis “As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man,” Proverbs 27:19.

In many ways our brain works like a computer. One is memory.

When you receive positive or negative input about yourself, you store it in your subconscious hard drive and later express those messages in your feelings and behaviors. The way you perceive and organize those inputs has a strong influence on how you interact with others. Unless you are taught to reject those negative messages you will tend to accept them as the truth…..it’s thought spam! Most people don’t challenge their own self-concept even though it may be irrational.

Accepting these thoughts at face value can lead to an action that is rejected by others.

Your self-concept is simply your impression of yourself as a human being. It has influence on your thinking and in a very real way will mold your behavior. You experience life through convictions, experiences, memories, feelings and your dreams for the future. “Just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, you can identify people by their actions,” Matthew 7:20. What you do is a reflection of what you think.

The best news I can give you about your self-concept is that you were NOT born with it. You have acquired it as you lived and that means you can un-acquire it like baggage you pick up or sit down.

You can change your thinking and improve your view on yourself which will change your view of others which will change your relationships and change your life.

Monday, September 8, 2014 Your self-concept is not your selfworth. You were born worthy. You are worthy of being loved and loving others. The future God has planned for you is great. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future,” Jeremiah 29:11. Your future is exciting but you have to do your part. See yourself as a child of the King.

Pray for a vision of how God sees you. Focus on that vision. Be intentional to make it happen. God will be your GPS if you believe He has a purpose and you are driven to complete it.

Your worth is in your identity as one created and loved by God. Typically, the strongest self-worth develops in childhood with kids who perceive unconditional love from their parents. This imitates God’s love and grace and is expressed to kids straightforwardly through concepts like Absolute Truths, Positive Affirmation and Wise Limits. Most parents love

Culpepper and Merriweather will have the raising of the Big Top, followed by a free tour. This presentation offers a unique face-to-face opportunity for families, schools, and interested community members to meet and learn all about the Culpepper & Merriweather circus family and includes a walking tour of the circus grounds. Learn interesting facts about our performers, the history of our show and the different species of animals in the circus family.

In this presentation we will also address topics such as hygiene, grooming and the veterinary care all of our animals receive. In recent years the tent raising and morning tour have become a popular program for families and interested community members. It is presented in a way everyone, young and old can learn many interesting facts about the Culpepper & Merriweather circus family.

On circus day, the performers bring the magic of the circus to life in each 90-minute

performance. This year’s lineup includes an All-Star group of performers and entertainers that include: Miss Simone and her breath taking single trapeze, Miss Paulina’s proud “ Big & Little” prancing ponies, The Arlise Troupe on their wild and crazy unicycles, Natalie’s American Eskimo Escapades, and back by popular demand Miss April and her on the edge of your seat Rola Bola.

This year Culpepper and Merriweather have Miss Gorgia displaying flexibility to the extreme and for the first time, the Wheel of Destiny & Tight Rope by The Los Moralitos. But their favorite is the performing Jungle Cats, Soloman, Delilah & Francis, presented by Mr. Trey Key, that, they say, will certainly have you on the edge of your seats. All of this is accompanied by original music written by the talented, Matt Margucci from Los Angeles, California. They say their performers are sure to amaze, delight and entertain the audience members of all ages beyond your wildest imagination. The costumes alone are certainly of Los Vegas quality.

Howe's Anthony Hawthorne did just that Friday night at the newly renovated Bulldogs Stadium. Over the years, Howe has had several accomplish the feat, but only three Bulldogs players have ever reached five rushing touchdowns in one game.

Band weekly honors

Rowdy Latty and Kate McCorkle Kate McCorkle, 10th grade, flute was named she's doing a great job.

"Bandsman of the Week." She is the daughter of Bobby & Sandra McCorkle. Her favorite Rowdy Latty was chosen as "Rookie of the part of the show is the music and her favorite Week." Rowdy Latty, 9th grade, tenor part of band is concert season. saxophone is the grandson of Gary & Audrey Chisum. His hobbies are baseball and he likes science.

Homecoming brings back legendary Howe coach for 25th anniversary One of the most successful Howe head football coaches will be in town this Friday for homecoming. It's the 25th anniversary of the 1989 District, BiDistrict and Area Champions and a recognition will take place at the peprally and before the football game with the team and Coach Jim Fryar and his wife Connie, who was the cheerleading sponsor for several

years in Howe.

Jim Fyar is second among all 25 Howe head coaches in school history with 41 wins in five seasons. His teams made the playoffs in four of the five years back in a time when only two teams qualified. The only team that missed the playoffs was the 1987 team that went 7-3. Fryar also had the 1985

team win the District, Bi-District and Area Championships.

All 1989 players, coaches, cheerleaders and drill team are invited to attend the homecoming pep-rally and celebrate 25 years with Jim and Connie Fryar.

Austin College Announces Program Marking 25 Years Since the Fall of the Berlin Wall history. As a former symbol of repression, the Berlin Wall’s fall has become an icon of freedom and peaceful revolution. In the context of the campaign, many questions will be explored—among them what made the people in East Germany take to the streets and eventually call for a German reunification, as well as the role of foreign policies of the U.S. and other major powers in the process.

SHERMAN, TEXAS—Austin College is one of 40 colleges and universities in the United States selected as grant recipients and project partners with the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., in an interdisciplinary campaign, “25 Years: Fall of the Berlin Wall.”

Initiated by the German Information Center USA, the center for public diplomacy at the German Embassy, the Fall of the Berlin Wall campaign commemorates the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, which marked a new era in German

“Two years ago, we partnered with other colleges and universities in the Think Transatlantic Campus Weeks, a campaign also generously funded by the German Embassy in Washington, D.C.,” said Ruth Cape, associate professor of German. “We are delighted to work on another round of interesting and fun-filled interdisciplinary projects here at Austin College and are quite grateful to the German Embassy for inviting us to be partners in this year’s campaign. We hope that commemorating this significant world event through numerous activities during the campus weeks will be not only an educating but also culturally enriching experience for Austin College students, faculty, and friends alike.”

The faculty and students of the Austin College German program and German Club will organize a variety of cultural events in

conjunction with these campus weeks. Various other disciplines, including art, music, and theatre, will also host events. The campuswide essay competition has begun, and a photo contest also will be held. First-, second-, and third-place contest winners, selected by a jury of faculty from various disciplines, will receive cash prizes.

Among the Austin College activities planned is an Improv performance hosted by the Theatre program on September 19 as part of Family Weekend. On September 23, ARAMARK lunch service in the campus dining hall will include a variety of German food in celebration of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Professor Georg Schild from the University of Tuebingen, Germany, will visit on October 6 as the main speaker of the campus weeks. Professor Schild was a visiting faculty member at Austin College in the spring of 2013.

The German Embassy's 25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall website describes the campaign this year as an attempt not only to commemorate the fall of the wall but also to reflect on a formerly divided Germany.

Students of the German program will present voices from both

sides of the wall in a bilingual reading on October 21.

“The Fall of the Berlin Wall has been a cornerstone in history, culture, politics, and many other areas,” said Wolfgang Lueckel, assistant professor of German.

“We want the campus community to come together and explore how various disciplines relate to the breathtaking events in Germany in 1989. A concert event with chamber music by German composers will feature Austin College musicians and lend a festive atmosphere to the anniversary.”

The historic 1898 building on the northeast corner of Haning St and Denny St has sold. Howe Enterprise owner Monte Walker has purchased the building from M.E. Curtis. Walker is restoring the building for the long-term goal of bringing business to town and creating jobs.

The building has been a drug store, interurban depot, cafe, appliance store and most recently a hardware store.

Owners have been Charlie Holcomb, R.B. Gree, The Wilifords, The McCoys, Hap Sanford, Bob Estep, M.E. Curtis and now Monte Walker.
