Bulldogs win season opener over Bonham
Being a former player for The Howe Bulldogs, it was special to get to broadcast the game on Friday night. It wasn't my first Howe game to broadcast, however. Back in 2010, I did the Howe vs. New Boston playoff game on radio. Thankfully, I was able to keep all of those 1989-1990 Howe Bulldog radio broadcasts of our playoff games from way back when. I have used some of those highlights in the opening segment. Back in those days, a man by the name of B.K. Lindsay did the play-by-play for KMKT-AM out of Denison. But the first year, in 1989, a man by the name of Commodore Wood did several of our games. Wood was a legend among the world of Denison Yellow Jacket fans. I worked 15 years in play-by-play for Sherman, Denison and McKinney and unfortunately never worked with Wood. But I do owe a lot to those who helped me get started. Guys like Bob Sullins, Lynn Burkhead and Chuck Kelly taught me a ton about what I do. A lot of what I heard from them, come out in what I say during these broadcasts.
The Howe Bulldogs changed philosophies on offense this year partly because Head Coach Zack Hudson wanted to control the tempo of the game more by running the football. Usually a 140 win doesn't indicate a dominating performance, however, it was just that for the Howe Bulldogs as Howe has won on opening night for the seventh time in the last eight years. Bonham's running back Kenton Manis started strong on the Stratton Carroll moments after scoring on a 55 yard run Friday night
