1.2.3. Discipline

Steve Simmons arrived in Howe just before my 8th grade year. Some of my friends became worried about playing football in high school because it had turned in to a boot camp style of workouts. This was the influence of Simmons. At first, he was an intimidating figure who held the key to "up-downs", which was a form of punishment. Simmons would simply say, "chop 'em" and we all knew what we faced. To me, he was a quirky coach who would belly flop in the mud with his linemen that he coached. He once pulled an earthworm out of his mouth in the huddle to prove a point to those lineman that they had to get low...lower than an earthworm. But the one thing as a coach, that I always realized about him was that he loved us. We've all seen the proud look on his face when he sees us. There's not much of a better feeling than that. Upon my visit with him for this article, we found ourselves fighting water pellets from our eyes on several occasions. Those drops had nothing to do with football, but with lives and wives. If you think he loves Howe, wait until you see what he thinks of his wife...next week.

Former Howe Mayor Ray Bledsoe was honored last Tuesday by Mayor Jeff Stanley and the city council by proclamation for his contributions to

the City of Howe and beyond. Bledsoe, not onhand was represented by his daughter Sherry Allison and grandson Eric continued on Page #13

The love affair that exists between Howe and Steve Simmons is almost too much to explain in words. It's hard to imagine anyone coming through Howe at any point in the city's history that has made a bigger impact on both youth and adults the way that Simmons has. The adoration can be seen when a child is even remotely near him. Howe has never been the same since he arrived in 1987.

Florida because that's where his father was stationed while in the US Navy. However, both of his parents (Ralph and Katie) are originally from Georgia, as well as his grandparents, greatgrandparents and greatgreat grandparents. "Georgia is our native state and when I was about one year old, my parents moved back to Griffin, Georgia, which was their hometown. And I grew up in Griffin until I was five." said Simmons.

Simmons grew up a Howe's first opponent was Bulldog fan. A Georgia Gladewater on Saturday and Bulldog fan that is. He was born in Jacksonville, His father, after his time in continued on Page #10 continued on Page #2
