LetterfromtheMayortotheCommunity Karla McDonald PositiveChange
LastweekwasmonumentalfortheCityof Howe.Bigchangesare comingtoHowe!What mightthislooklikeyou ask?Changemaylook likebuildings,roads, bridges,andafewfaces changingintime. AsI reflectbackonsomeof theannouncementsthat weremadelastweek,I
focusmoreontheconcept ofchangeandwhatthis mightmeantoourcommunity.
Changeisnotalwayswelcomedbyeveryonebecausechangecanbeuncomfortableaswetendto gravitateourthinkingto “what we have always known will soon no longer be,” or so we think. Change can also be un-
comfortable because we have expectations that may not be met. We tend to be creatures of habit because we like what is known; we find comfort in things always being the same. We find discomfort in the unknown.
Iunderstandthisconcept becausechangeissometimesbeyondmycontrol. Takeforexample,going
intoarestauranttoorder your“usual”meal,onlyto findoutitisnolongeron themenu,ortheingredients havechanged.Afewyears ago,Irecallgoingintoa localfavoriterestaurantand orderingmyfavoritedish, onlytofindtheyhad changedtheingredients. WhenIaskedwhytheingredientshadchanged,they explainedtheyhadupdated toingredientstobe “cleaner,”andthenewin-
gredientshadmorenutritionalvalue.Logically,I couldunderstand;however,Ididnotwantto thinklogicallybecause,I wantedwhatI’dalways known.IhadanexpectationofreceivingwhatI wasusedtohaving.Why isthis?Sometimeswe findcomfortinwhatis familiarand,wesee changeasdysfunctional. Ordowefindcomfortin dysfunction?
