Riken Cross Finishes Fourth at Regionals!

This week don’t miss the announcement for a Master Gardener’s Class coming up, along with a Texoma Patriots’ meeting

Riken Cross competed in the Regional Finals this Saturday in the 100m dash and finished 4th with a 10.84!

This performance ranks Riken as the 10th fastest 100m runner in the state at the 3A level—and he’s only a junior. The future is bright!

Our 4x200 relay team wrapped up their season on Friday, placing 11th out of 16 teams in a competitive field.

We are incredibly proud of these athletes and the way they represented Howe—with heart, grit, and class.

That’s a wrap on the 2025–2026 track season.

While looking for an online version to replace to paper booklet, I stumbled upon a daily update for The Farmer’s Almanac that is much more extensive and fun, including puzzles, words of the day, lists of famous birthdays and death dates, and more. To put each day of the week would take up far more room than we have, so here are the links for each day!

We were thrilled to see our first Painted Buntings of the year at our feeder on April 27.

Painted Buntings are so colorful that folks who are not familiar with this bird may think they are seeing an escaped pet tropical bird. “In the 1800s, John James Audubon wrote that “thousands” of caged painted buntings were shipped from New Orleans to Europe every year as pets. Though it is now illegal, this species is still captured today in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean for sale in the international pet trade.” ( Smithsonian National Zoo ) Painted Buntings are considered at moderate risk of extinction on bird conservation watchlists.

An interesting fact about Painted Buntings is that rather than molting during the breeding season or at the wintering area like many other birds, the “western” group (ours) stopover in Southern Arizona or northern Mexico to molt; Sibley speculates that this may be due to food availability.

The Painted Bunting mostly eats seeds and insects, primarily those of grasses and arthropods; sometimes eats berries and fruits.

An experienced birder advised us to provide white millet in our feeders and they go for it! During the breeding season, the Painted Bunting eats more insects and feeds them to nestlings.

When a batted fair ball is hit and it bounces over the outfield fence, it is not a “Ground Rule Double”. A Ground Rule is a rule that is added to the existing rules that the game is being played under that the rule book does not cover. The actual term is an “Automatic Double” or a “Two base award”. An actual ground rule is where a ball may be declared dead due to striking the roof in a domed stadium or becoming lodged in a rain tarp along the foul lines.

Another item is when a batter runs to first base and he runs past the base, he may be allowed to turn and return to the base safely without being put out. He is allowed to turn either right or left to do this.

The only time he is at risk of being tagged for an out is if he makes an attempt to advance to the next base.

And lastly, it is not interference with a defensive player in the base line. It is obstruction and a one base award to the next base if deemed so by the umpire. In addition, there is not any place in any rule book the states that “Tie goes to the runner”. The runner is either safe or out….period.

Now let’s jump over to football: There is no reference in the rule book to a “Lateral Pass”. The two ways you can pass the ball is either forward or backward by definition.

You can look that up under rules 2 and 7 in the rulebook by the way.

So therefore, the proper term for a

trick play known incorrectly as a hook and lateral is actually a hook and ladder.

Also, in the high school and college ranks, there is not a foul for “face guarding”. That is an NFL rule. In addition, if the snapper bounces the snap to the punter, the punter still has protection from contact unless the ball is tipped by a defender and the defender who tips it is the only player allowed to make legal contact on the punter during the act and follow through of the actual punting action.

Now at this juncture, I would expand into hockey but since they do not kick anybody out for fighting, I will leave it alone.

And basketball? Since walking, double-dribble, palming and carrying the ball and charging became extinct, they decided to burn the rule book and let ‘em play. So since there are no rules, keep moving to the finale of this humble scribe’s rants.

Texas History Minute With springtime, Texans turn watchful eyes to the sky for rising storm clouds or sudden shifts in winds. In 2025, the National Ken Bridges Weather Service reported 162 tornadoes struck the Lone Star State, the most of any state. This was part of the 1,559 total reported across the nation, making 2025 the fifth-highest year for tornadoes on record. Though tornadoes have occurred in all 50 states, Texas is part of the notorious “Tornado Alley” where the often-volatile mix of cool, dry air from the Rocky Mountains mixes with the warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico most commonly meet on the Great Plains to produce the violent storms. Texans have long known the power of tornadoes.

Tornadoes have been observed in Texas for centuries. In fact, “tornado” is a Spanish word originating from the early Spanish explorers who saw the deadly twisting winds on the early frontier. Though they have been observed as long as people have trod on Texas soil, one of the earliest recorded tornado deaths in Texas was from an April 1885 outbreak that killed 60 people in the Waco area. Tornadoes have been reported in every region of the state and have been reported in each of the Lower 48 states.

Tornadoes are powerful, compact storms with swirling winds of up to 300 miles per hour. It is these intense winds in the more powerful tornadoes that produce the more unusual stories of straw being flung into trees intact or cars or even trains being lifted up and carried long distances. Most tornadoes have weak winds and never touch the ground, but they can intensify suddenly and without warning. Some tornadoes can travel over a hundred miles before dissipating. In fact, a 1947 tornado formed in the Panhandle and tore through Oklahoma before dissolving in Kansas, leaving 181 dead in its wake.

Tornadoes can form at any time of day or night, they are most common in the late afternoon. However, tornadoes at night have often been the most terrifying. In the years before weather warnings, radio, or storm sirens, communities had no way of knowing if a violent storm was approaching during the night and no way to prepare. Near midnight on May 30, 1909, the town of Zephyr in Brown County was wrecked by a tornado that left 34 dead.

One of the deadliest was in Goliad in May 1902. A tornado that day left 114 dead and nearly 300 injured. Equally as deadly was the disastrous May 11, 1953, tornado in Waco. The storm, measured at one-third of a mile wide, also claimed 114 lives and left nearly 600 injured as the tornado swept through the city, destroying 600 homes. In April 1927, a tornado in Rocksprings in South Texas destroyed

all but 12 buildings in the city and killed 74. An April 1947 outbreak saw a tornado move from near Canadian to Glazier and Higgins in the Panhandle before moving into Oklahoma, leaving 181 dead.

One of the worst in Texas History struck Wichita Falls on the afternoon of April 10, 1979. The tornado formed northeast of Holliday in Archer County and raced to the city. The tornado was more than a mile wide as it wrecked a school and a shopping center in the south side of the city, leaving 42 dead and more than 1,700 injured. More than 3,000 homes were destroyed. What came to be called “Terrible Tuesday” haunted the city for years afterward.

Tornadoes are most common in the span of April through June. In fact, each May will see an average of 100 tornadoes erupting in the state. If the conditions are right, they can appear any time during the year, from the Gulf Coast to West Texas. A February 1935 tornado hit the East Texas counties of Leon and Houston, leaving 12 dead in its wake. In January 1946, a deadly tornado hit rural Anderson County, leaving 15 dead.

Since the end of World War II, technological advances have steadily improved understanding of how and when tornadoes form. Use of radar combined with observations of wind, humidity, and air pressure associated with storm activity greatly advanced weather forecasting techniques. Looking at the success of Air Force weathermen in issuing a tornado watch in 1948 to save lives, prompted the warning system to be adopted everywhere. By the late 1980s, extensive research into tornadoes and new radar systems prompted the National Weather Service to establish a system of Doppler radar towers to monitor the weather. By the mid-1990s, a network of improved Doppler radar sites had been set up across the nation, carefully scanning each storm and relaying that information to the media, to the public, and to government agencies. Better computer systems allowed forecasters to scan these storms for rotation that would indicate tornado formation. Meteorologists can now have a warning of up to 15 minutes that one may be forming. Because of these developments, better warning systems, and better storm shelters, fatalities from tornadoes have plummeted since the 1950s. Tornado drills have been regular features in schools across the South for decades.

In spite of our advances in technology and more sophisticated warning systems, we are still at the mercy of nature. With each storm, neighbors would always come together and rebuild, determined not to let disaster be the end. Though tornadoes can appear with little warning, careful attention to weather forecasts, preparation, and modern technology can save lives.

Would the existence of aliens affect our faith?

We are all philosophers, which simply means we all have opinions and worldviews about most everything.

Dr. Billy Holland Since the birth of the internet and social media, we’ve seen just how true this is, and I’m sure, as the topic of this column caught your attention, you already have your own thoughts about the subject. If you’ve ever been a part of a group discussion, it does not take long to realize that humans are proficient at collecting ideas with the ability to store them in their memory banks, along with the confidence to communicate what they believe. This includes the possibilities and speculations about extraterrestrials. Before we get started, we should establish that there are different types of views about aliens, and not all of them necessarily mean beings from other planets. Whether your response is ‘no’, ‘yes’, or ‘I don’t know’, this has become one of the most popular unsolved mysteries in our culture.

Since the middle of the twentieth century, the interest in the unexplained phenomena of UFO’s has soared. We have seen the documentaries where witnesses declare they have seen objects in the skies, and some have not only testified about seeing creatures, but claim they were abducted. Up to the 1940’s, the majority of the population thought that martians were a joke, saying those who claimed to see flying saucers were hallucinating, confused, or just wanting attention. But in today’s modern world, there is not as much laughing and mocking. One reason could be the significant number of highly respected people, including pilots, who have come forward. Another reason could be that our entertainment industry has produced so much fantasy fiction that the younger generations consider these anomalies more of a probability than a possibility.

As a Christian minister, you would think I would occasionally have someone ask me what I think about little green men from outer space, but it’s rarely mentioned. Maybe it’s because we have not just a trepidation of our integrity being questioned, but an honest fear of the unknown. There is still a certain amount of stigma associated with saying we have seen an unidentified starship, but maybe the more important questions are: What difference would it make if aliens are real, and what makes life on other planets seem unreasonable? I realize that many Christians interpret the Bible as not mentioning other worlds or civilizations that exist within or beyond our solar system. However, is there anything necessarily wrong or sinful with being open-minded about people definitely seeing disturbing things in the sky, and the likelihood that strangers are watching us?

The sheer vastness of the universe

alone allows our minds to ponder what or who else is out there. Since God is infinite, could this planet be just one of many He has created? What did God do before He made our world? It’s interesting to consider if these advanced and curious lifeforms are just our neighbors, or angels that once lived in heaven and were cast down to where we live? Both are no doubt far more advanced than we are, and most likely have been observing us since darkness was upon the face of the deep. I believe orthodox worldviews would struggle if aliens were to finally reveal themselves and want to negotiate an alliance with our planet, but it’s my opinion that the proof of extraterrestrials would most likely cause religious belief systems to accept this discovery as another part of God’s indescribable power and authority, rather than panic and collapse.

While the scientific community, along with the spiritual philosophers try to process the reality that aliens are actually real, many who believe and trust God would eventually interpret these lifeforms as a confirmation to move away from an earth-centered view where we are the only living creatures in the entire cosmos. One example of a theological debate would be whether these visitors are simply beings from another planet that desire to be friends, and if the Bible and salvation apply to them. On the other hand, are they demons that have a mission to deceive, plunder, and destroy? Or could they be God’s angels that are doing His will and trying to help us? Either way, most people would be extremely cautious, even if gifts were offered, such as incredible advances in technology, within the negotiation of a galactic peace alliance. Then, of course, there will always be those who will dismiss and ignore the evidence as they claim it contradicts the foundation of divine truth. What are your thoughts?

The Patriot Pony Tsunami Revisited

Posted May 7: A tsunami last year in southeastern Alaska was the second-largest in recorded history, a study published yesterday revealed. Waves reached 1,578 feet high, second only to a 1958 tsunami in Alaska that produced up to 1,720-foot waves.

At 5:26 am on Aug. 10, 2025, a mass of rock measuring 83 million cubic yards—24 times the volume of the Great Pyramid of Giza—fell into Alaska’s Tracy Arm fjord (what is a fjord?). The study’s authors blamed climate change, saying the melting glacier next to the mountain left the rock unsupported and vulnerable to collapse. Waves sloshed in the fjord for days and produced seismic activity equivalent to a 5.4-magnitude earthquake, shaking the planet.

Chinese Agent Trial

Posted May 7: The trial began yesterday for Lu Jianwang, a US citizen accused of illegally running a Chinese police station in Manhattan. Prosecutors accuse Lu of harassing Chinese dissidents abroad; a codefendant pleaded guilty in 2024.

Foreign police stations are not without precedent: The New York Police Department has posts across the world (see map). China reportedly has more than 100 stations across 53 countries, though it calls the posts “service centers,” and claims they provide consulate-style assistance to Chinese citizens abroad. Lu and his codefendant ran an office in Chinatown called “Fuzhou Police Overseas Service Station” that helped

Chinese citizens renew their driver’s licenses. However, Lu also stands accused of harassing at least three pro-democracy activists since 2018.

One accused Lu of warning him to return to China or his family would be harmed. Lu has pleaded not guilty to charges, including acting as a foreign agent.

Hantavirus at Sea

Posted May 6: The MV Hondius remains at sea near Praia as health authorities delay docking the Dutch cruise ship in the Canary Islands for three to four days amid a hantavirus outbreak that has killed three people and sickened at least four others.

The ship, carrying 88 passengers and 59 crew members, including 17 Americans, departed Argentina April 1 for Antarctica and remote South Atlantic islands. It has stayed at sea for days as authorities coordinate quarantine measures, testing, and medical evacuations. Early findings suggest limited person-to-person transmission—a rare development for hantavirus, which typically spreads through contact with infected rodent droppings or urine (what is hantavirus?). Officials said no rats were reported onboard, raising the possibility that a now-deceased Dutch couple was infected before boarding. Track the ship’s location here.

Hantavirus can cause severe respiratory illness and is fatal in about 35% of US cases. The Andes strain found in South America can spread between people, though rarely, and carries a mortality rate of roughly 40%.

No known treatment exists.

Posted May 6: Meta will begin using AI to analyze users’ bone structure and height as part of what it says is a broader push to help remove users under age 13 from its platforms. Meta announced yesterday that the approach will not involve facial recognition; the tech giant already scans text for signals of a user's age, including mentions of birthdays and school grades.

The announcement comes days after Meta threatened to shut down all platforms in New Mexico after being ordered to pay $375M in civil penalties for endangering children’s mental health and well-being. The state is now asking a judge to order Meta to pay $3.7B, and calling for an end to infinite scroll features and push notifications, among other changes.

When Australia banned social media use for kids under age 16 in December, Meta says it removed about 550,000 accounts from its platforms.

The Patriot Pony Orphan Masterpieces

Posted May 6: Paris’ Musée d’Orsay yesterday opened its first-ever gallery dedicated to orphaned artwork recovered from Nazi possession after World War II. Roughly 2,200 pieces were retrieved from Germany and Austria, entrusted to French museums, and never claimed. Many are believed to have belonged to Jewish collectors. Adolf Hitler's deputy reportedly visited Paris 21 times, selecting works from their collections. After the Nazi regime collapsed, France recovered roughly 60,000 works, reconnecting about 45,000 with their rightful owners. Last month, the Musée d’Orsay created a team dedicated to finding the heirs of the roughly 225 works still in its possession, all by artists born between 1820 and 1870.

Who Bids on the Bidding Site?

Posted May 5: GameStop made an unsolicited $56B offer Sunday to acquire eBay, a bid to create a combined company capable of rivaling Amazon. EBay said yesterday its board will review the offer, which is nearly 20% above its $46B closing valuation Friday.

GameStop, valued at nearly $12B, is pursuing a company nearly four times its size. To fill the gap, the largely brick-and-mortar company is offering 50% cash and 50% GameStop shares, and says it has secured a commitment of up to $20B from TD Bank in debt financing.

CEO Ryan Cohen maintains the combined company could leverage GameStop’s roughly 1,600 stores to

fulfill eBay orders, largely focused on collectibles. Cohen also hopes to push eBay toward live commerce, involving real-time video streams of sales (see 101).

Pulitzer Prize Winners

Posted May 5: The 2026 Pulitzer Prize winners were announced yesterday, honoring last year's distinguished work in journalism and the arts.

The Washington Post received the Gold Medal for Public Service for its coverage of the Trump administration's overhaul of federal agencies. Reuters won for documenting the expansion of executive power (national reporting); The New York Times for exposing conflicts of interest tied to the presidency (investigative reporting); and The Associated Press for its global probe into Silicon Valley-built surveillance tools now deployed by the US Border Patrol (international reporting).

Other winners include "Pablo Torre Finds Out" for its investigation into how the Los Angeles Clippers allegedly skirted the NBA's salary cap (audio reporting); Texas Monthly's Aaron Parsley for a first-person account of survival and loss after deadly Central Texas floods (feature writ-

ing); and Daniel Kraus for "Angel Down" (fiction). See the full list of winners.

The awards are named after Joseph Pulitzer, one of the founders of modern journalism, who left $2M to Columbia University upon his death in 1911 to establish its journalism school and the prize. Winners receive $15K.

Meta Lawsuit Part II

Posted May 4: Part two of a landmark lawsuit over Meta’s failure to shield children from online dangers begins today in New Mexico, in a case that may potentially force the company to institute reforms for minors on its platforms.

Originally filed in December 2023, a jury levied a $375M penalty against Meta last month, finding the company knowingly violated the state’s consumer protection laws and exposed children to sexual exploitation and other harms. In the second “remedies” phase, a judge will decide to what extent Meta must comply with reforms sought by New Mexico officials. These include instituting strict age verification, banning infinite scroll, and limiting minors to 90 hours per month. The company has suggested it could shut down access to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp in New Mexico, pending the outcome.
