A story was brought to my attention last week regarding a road and the clarification of why it has not been taken care of. I am currently working on that, I was unable to meet with Josh Marr on the expected day but will soon. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. Howe is all of our town and I don’t know many of the issues we have to ask about them. I appreciate your help making this paper the tool it can be for change in our community.
In other news, I have only received one email with questions for the School Board Race right now. I would love to have great questions. I see you all asking questions on Facebook and it doesn’t seem you are getting your answers. Or at least not where we can all benefit. Will you please send me more to work with? I can only come up with so much on my own– I don’t have children, I don’t know what goes on inside the schools outside of what I hear. You all know, your children know. What should we be asking? I don’t know, I hope y’all care enough to reach out to me to help me ask them things.

Wefoundaninterestingarticleonline recently,SearchingforBirds.Thearticlebeginsbyshowingstatisticsfor birdinfosearches;nationallythemost googledbirdisthecategory,“Hawk”, followedby“Eagle”,then“Duck”.For ourstate,Texas,“Duck”isthe mostfrequentlysearchedtypeofbird.
Beyondnumbers,thearticleleadsthe readerthroughaseriesofstepstoidentifyaparticularbird,withcolorful graphicsandlinkstoadditionalresources.Folkswhosimply enjoycasuallyobservingbirdswill findthishelpfuliftheyencounterwhat thearticlecallsa“spark”bird,onethat piquesinterestandinspiressomeresearch.
Alittlebirdthatweresearchedrecently istheChippingSparrow.Wethinkthis

Someweeksinmotherhoodfeel heavierthanothers.ThisweekremindedmeofafewthingsIhopeI neverforget.
First loveyourkids.Lovethemno matterwhat.Nomatterwhat.When thingsfeelmessyoruncertain,love staysconstant.Thingsusuallywork out,evenwhenwearetheonesquietlypanickinginside.
Second becarefulwhoyoushare detailswithwhenyou’reinthemiddleofahardparentingmoment.Most peoplemeanwell,butsometimes sharingtoomuchcanchangerelationshipsinwayswedidn’tintend. Noteveryoneneedsthewholestory.
Anotherlesson:don’tcompetewith otherparentsorotherkids.Ourchildren’speersarenotthecompetition. Theyarejustkidsdoingthebestthey canwiththetoolstheyhave.I’mremindingmyselftostopjudgingso quickly.Werarelyknowthefullstory behindsomeoneelse’ssituation.We don’tknowtheirheart,theirstruggles, orwhethersomethinghappenedina split-secondmomentorafteralong internalbattle. Listentoyourkids.Reallylisten.

Emotioncomesquicklyinmotherhood,butwecan’talwaysletemotiondriveeverydecision.
Godlovesus.Helovesourchildren. AndHewantswhatisbestforbothof us.
Sometimesthemostfaithfulthingwe candoasparentsissimplykeeploving,keeplistening,andkeeptrusting thatwearenotdoingthisalone.

TexasHistoryMinute WorldConfronts Iran'sLongHistoryofWarfare Inoneofthemost ancientareasof theworld,warfare hasagainerupted, usheringinnew fearsanduncertainties. Thehistoryof Iran,calledPersiainancienttimes,dates backtoantiquity,butithasoftenbeenthe sceneofupheavalandwarfare.
Iranhassteepmountainsandplateaus acrossthecenterandnorth,withdesertin thesoutheast. ThismakestheterrainclosertoPakistanandAfghanistantotheeast, asopposedtothemostlyflatplainsinIraq tothewestandtheopendesertsofSaudi Arabiatothesouthwest. Thisterrainhas helpedIranresistwavesofinvasionsover thecenturies,butithasnotmadeitimmunetoconquest.
Iranisoneoftheoldestcontinuouslyinhabitedareasintheworld. Artifactsupto 100,000yearsoldhavebeenfoundin someareas. Around3000BC,theybecameamongtheearliestpeoplestodevelopwriting. Itspositionmadeitavitallink intheancienttraderoutesconnectingChinaandIndiawithMesopotamia,Egypt, andEurope.
Between646BCand550BC,Iranfell undercontroloftheAssyriansandthe Chaldeans. By529BC,thenewlyindependentPersianscontrolledterritoryfrom AfghanistantoTurkeytoEgypt,making itthelargestempireinhistorytothat point. AttemptstopushintoEurope proveddifficult. Thisexpansionsparked yearsofwarfarewiththeGreeksstarting in499BC,leadingtotheinvasionby AlexandertheGreatby334BC. Within threeyears,Alexanderhadcrushedthe Persians.
Forcenturies,Persiaclashedwith theRomansandByzantines. InAD633, MuslinarmiesinvadedfromArabia. TakingadvantageofthedeepdivisionsamongthePersians,theMuslims conqueredthemby650,leadingthemajoritytoconverttoIslamandawayfrom Zoroastrianism,anothermonotheistic faith. ThisportendedamajorshiftinPersianculture.
Bytheearly1900s,Iranfounditself squeezedbetweenRussianinfluencefrom theCaspianSeatothenorthandBritish influenceacrossthesouthernhalfofthe country. Changeswerecoming. In1906, theking,orshah,allowedalimitedconstitutionalgovernment,andoilwasdiscoveredin1908. Butcontinuingunrestledto Iran’soccupationbytheBritishandthe RussiansduringWorldWarI.
In1925,RezaShah,anarmyofficer,seizedpower. Heofferedreforms butwascriticizedforoppressionandcorruption. By1935,theshahdeclaredthat theofficialnamewouldchangetoIran fromPersia. Persiahadmostlybeena Greektermfortheregionwhilelocalvariationson"Iran"werecommonforcenturies. Hisattempttomodernizemosques anddressstylesenragedfundamentalists, leadingtohisousterbyMohammadReza Shahin1941. DuringWorldWarII,Iran maintainedaclosepositionwiththeAllies,supplyingoilandfunnelingwarmaterieltoRussia.
AfterWorldWarII,theUSenjoyedawarmrelationshipwithIran,with asteadytradeinoilandadvancedAmeri-
canweaponry. ShahMohammed-Reza formedatwo-houseparliament,butelectionswerelimited. However,Iranwas caughtbetweenthedesireforpeaceful relationswithCommunistRussiaandits desireforprotectionfromtheUS. The shahclashedwithPrimeMinisterMohammadMossadeqintheearly1950s, eachbrieflyforcingtheotherfrompower. Mossadeq’seffortsatdemocraticreformsandnationalizingtheoilindustry ledtheshahtolaunchacoupagainsthim in1953,aidedbytheCIA.
Theshahassumedfullpower. Bythe 1960sand1970s,Iran’smajorcities lookedlikemuchofthewesternworld,, withfullymodernconveniencesand womenopenlyenjoyingtherighttoeducationandtheirownprofessionalcareers. Buthatredfortheshah’sopulence inthefaceofpovertyandthearrestsand tortureofdissidentsgrew.
Bythe1960s,theonlyeffectiveoppositionwasthroughthemosques. Ayatollah RuhollahKhomeiniwasexiledin 1964. Asanayatollah,hewasconsidered oneoftheleadingfiguresoftheMuslim faith. AyatollahKhomeini,andhissuccessor,AyatollahAliKhameini,were believedtobedirectdescendantsofthe ProphetMuhammad,givingthemeven greaterprestigeamongMuslims.
In1978,thepeopleofIraneruptedinto protestsagainsttheshah. Hewasquickly overthrown,andheandhisfamilywent intoexile. Shortlyafterward,Ayatollah Khomeinireturned,andhisfollowers launchedarevolutionthatimposedastrict theocracyoverIran,withtheayatollah commandingmostofthepoliticaland religiouspower. Whenthedeposedshah wasallowedintotheUSforcancertreatmentsin1979,itsparkedriotsthatledto thecaptureoftheUSEmbassy,with56 hostagesheldfornearlytwoyears.
SaddamHusseininvadedIranin 1980. Theeight-yearIran-IraqWarleft onemilliondead. Inthemeantime,the fundamentalistrulersofIranhavestripped thepopulationofwhatfewrightstheyhad andexecutedthousandsofdissidents acrossthecountry. AfterawaveofprotestseruptedacrossIranearlierthisyear, thearmyexecutedupto20,000protestors,accordingtoobservers.
Whilemorethan96%ofIranianstoday areMuslim,theyareoftenatoddswith manyotherMuslims. Iran,alongwith southernandcentralIraq,mostlypractices ShiaIslam,whileabout85%ofMuslims areSunni. Thisdivisionovertheology andleadershiphasledtobitternessand violencebetweenthetwobranchesof Islam. Sincethe1979revolution,Iranhas maintainedaninterestinprotectingand promotingShiapower,oftenbeen throughsponsoringinsurgentsandterroristgroupsacrosstheregion. Thissparked civilwarsinLebanoninthe1980saswell asYemenandIraqinthe2010s. Nearly two-thirdsofIraniansareofPersiandescent. About16%areAzerbaijaniand another10%areKurds,bothmostlylivinginNorthwestIran. MostoftheMuslimpopulationtothewest(namelyIraq, Syria,SaudiArabia,andtheGulfStates) isArab.
ThecurrentfightinginIranand acrosstheMiddleEastnowinvolves morethanadozencountries. Theexplosivesituationisevolvingrapidly. What ultimatelywillemergefromtheconflict remainsuncertain.
Standingstrongwith confidenceinGod Fearandanxietyarenegativebyproductsofmodern life,tryingto influenceus awayfrom God.Ourjobs areoften stressful,our relationships andfinances, andevenour childrenstrugglewithsocialpressures wehardlyfacedwhenweweretheir age.Somepeopleturntonaturalremedies,likethenewlypopularcannabidiolproducts,whileothersareabsorbed insocialmedia,butthereisevenbetter newsthatcangiveuspeaceinthis troubledworld.TheBibleremainsan unfailingsourceofhopeandcomfort intheseasonswhenweare discouragedandperplexed.Psalm 46:1-3declaresthateveninthedarkest times,wecanstandstronginthelight ofGod’sauthoritybecauseweare trustingthatHispromisesaretrue. “Godisourrefugeandstrength,an ever-presenthelpintrouble.Therefore, wewillnotfear,thoughtheearthgive wayandthemountainsfallintothe heartofthesea,thoughitswatersroar andfoamandthemountainsquake withtheirsurging.”
Therearetimeswhenallofus,atone timeoranother,feelsadanddiscouraged.It’salrighttooccasionally examineoursituation,butweshould notpitchourtentanddecidetolive there.It’stheirritatingthingsthatcan distractusandstartpullingustoward doubtandworry.Changingourmind canchangeourattitude,butitdoes notjusthappenallbyitself;ittakes havingastrongdesiretotransformour mind,whichinvolveschoosingthe typeoflifewewanttolive.Weknow thatspiritualfaithisbeingpositiveminded,whichgivesusjoyand strength,andwecanalsoestablishthat optimismisthekeyingredientforhappiness.Ithelpsuslivemorefully andengagemoregenerouslywithlife. Ithelpsusnoticejoy,toseewhatis possible,andtakethenextstepswith hopeandconfidence.Inmyoffice,my deskiscoveredwithencouraging quotesthatremindmetostaypositive andfocusedonGod–Heistheway, thelife,andthetruth.
Formany,theirwealthandhealthare theirsecurity,andtheycannotfathom thethoughtoflosingthem. However,maywerememberthatGod isourultimatesecurityandourhealer. ThoughHisfollowersliveinthis world,wearealsocitizensofheaven. Whatanencouragementtoknowthis temporarylifeisnotallthereis–ourfutureisforever!“Heshallcover youwithHisfeathers,andunderHis wingsyoushalltakerefuge;Histruth shallbeyourshieldandbuckler.You shallnotbeafraidoftheterrorby night,norofthearrowthatfliesby day, norofthepestilencethatwalksin darkness,norofthedestructionthat layswasteatnoonday.”Whenweare overwhelmedwithfearandfeelasif thewallsareclosinginonus,wecan
knowthatGodiswithusandwill alwaystakecareofus.Rememberthat faithnorfearforcethemselvesupon us;theyareinvitedguests.Weare giventhechoicetoselectoneoftwo foundationswewillstandon;thus, yieldingourselvestoGod’scaremust beadeliberatedecision.Wecannot alwayscontrolwhatishappeningin oursurroundings,butwecancontrol howwereacttothem.
